  1. A lot of the folks on this discussion forum have been around the Drum Corps community since the 70's, and even a few from the 60's. As I was sitting at work and reading through a few threads on another Drum Corps related forum, I began to wonder what it was like for Drum Corps in the early and late 70's, during the two Energy/Oil Crises. I don't know how extensive tours were back then, especially for the bigger Corps (ex.: Blue Devils, SCV). So herein lies the question: What was the impact of yesteryear's oil crisis on Drum Corps? I do know that the crises in the 70's were quiet bad, with a national rationing rule being instilled upon the entire country, and many stations unable to stay open because there was no gas to pump. Luckily, we have no yet reached that point, but with the discovery that Oil hit 108 dollars a barrel today, it seems as though we're getting quite close. This has to do a lot with Drum Corps today. With bigger, longer tours, more time spent on the road, more energy/gas being used, and the rising price of said oil and food/other commodities, I think it'd be nice if some of the older members here (And any younger folk with a decent knowledge of history in the 70's) would explain some of the details as to what went on, what changed for them personally during that time, and what had to be done under these dire circumstances. Thank you.
  2. With "The Hollands" still in command? PFFT. not likely. More like 24. Trinity - The Seguin Corps fields it's first Div. I Corps . . . and after four weeks of all-days, folds four days into tour. again. :sshh: (Anyway) All of the Corps from California will be forced to have "Of Arizona Bay" in their names by 2017, due to the sinking of the state of California, thanks to Los Angeles. (Bill Hicks, anybody?) The Blue Devils of Arizona Bay The Santa Clara Vanguard of Arizona Bay The Esperanza of Arizona Bay (Paradox Drum & Bugle Corps, out of Miami, FL, will take Finals for Div. I. :P )
  3. As an aside: Kiwanis is still in operation and waiting for DCI to give the okay. They're holding a Camp this month and are currently planning on locations, times, etc. www.kiwaniskavaliers.org Anyway. Sweet project you're doing. Keep it up.
  4. You heard? . . . Were you there? Also, and I'll repeat this after Sarah stated it, considering all the crap we had to go through just to keep this camp going rather than letting down the kids who want to march (And I know for a fact already that a lot of kids didn't know about the sudden change in plans, since they've contacted me, asking what happened), I'm surprised we had the number of people who came out, and many of them from upstate! I had a full house, in fact. The staff, and I know this for a fact, is working on getting every single kid who sent an application informed, and to come to the next audition camp, which is sometime in early-to-mid January . . . Or late January. I forget. Stop listening to what you hear, no matter from where it's from. Unless you're experiencing this with your own two eyes, I would suggest you please stop.
  5. Although I don't like speaking up, I feel like it's something that needs to be said before more rumors/accusations begin to pop up. The original school that we were supposed to be at, for some reason or another (Remember, this just all I know), told us yesterday that they had some sort of function or something going on during the weekend, and that we couldn't use the school. This was something we just couldn't foresee. It came out of nowhere, and the staff had to scramble to find another place. Luckily, we were able to find a couple of places, but like all of you, I don't know how the schedule is going to work, or whether the kids will be housed in one location (I'm already housing around 8 people for friday night, and I might have to house more. A lot of the other prospective members [yeah, the kids who havn't even tried out yet] are helping out by opening their houses to kids coming down), but we'll find out tommorow. It's a low-blow, that's for sure, but for those of you who like to throw blame, please don't. This is seriously something that just came out of the blue. I'm as ###### off about it as anyone . . . I always hated the people who went to that school, and I just got a real reason to keep that hatred. haha. And, just as an aside from me: If you know anybody who's trying out, or you're trying out, and they/you get discouraged because of this . . . Please don't. And please don't let them get discouraged. Remember, the past few months have been extremely rough, so give these guys some credit for progressing so quickly in such a short amount of time. They're doing the best they can to keep this Corps alive and running. Come to the camp. Keep yourself updated on the website, and if you're coming down or just want to show support, join the messageboard (which is currently having problems of its own.). Hope to see you all tommorow (or today for some). And keep up the support. The last thing we need is a group of people bagging down on the organization like the last few months. "We Are One"
  6. If it's not one, it's the other. Oh, you guys. :) Anyway. I know Sarah meant that in a humorous way. So please don't take it beyond that. Don't know why everyone is so easily ticked at little things like that. Anyway. Hope to see some of you at the Camp.
  7. Message board is up, for those of you wondering. www.kiwaniskavaliers.org

  9. That actually depends. Some Corps (Not pointing fingers at anyone specific. And this does not include the ENTIRE Corps. Sometimes just staff, older members, etc.) actually teach their kids to look down on other, lower tier/division Corps. In essence, this is why a lot of Div. II and III Corps (And lower tier Div. I Corps [i.e. Kiwanis -- they only had 12-13 horns at the beginning of the summer in 06, despite efforts to recruit]) struggle to get their members in time. I see it all the time. I've had friends (From everywhere. Again, not pointing fingers at anyone or any organization) actually tell me "Don't go to Div. II, it sucks./It's a waste/They're like high schools with no flutes/They barely tour" when I was younger and uneducated. Luckily, I got to spend time marching with a Div. III Corps and got rid of the lies told to me.
  10. Yeah. About that . . . No. I understand there are politics in DCI, especially in the scoring of upper tier Corps, but to say you got cheated . . . I disagree. And I can find points from your show that would say you never got cheated. Yeah, you guys definately put in the effort, just like everyone else, but . . . someone's gotta get last place. Or 2nd to last place. I loved Pio's show. I've watched it a bunch of times. But again, there are things that go on during shows which doesn't let it get higher scores. And, last I heard, Div. II and Div. III were scored on the same sheets? Am I missing something? I remember when I was with a Div. III Corps, being scored in the same way as a Div. I Corps. and what about the Orlando show in 05? Teal Sound getting a 55.something, and beating out Kiwanis. A Div. II Corps beating a Div. I Corps. And who says a Div. II show isn't as demanding as a Div. I Corps? It all depends on what the show calls for drill-wise and music-wise. I know of many Div. II Corps and Div. III Corps that could take a Div. I brassline or hornline any day. Also, didn't Academy score a 96 or 95 in 2006? Cavies scored a 97.2. Yeah.
  11. Hey, so yeah, how about it? Kiwanis coming back and all? Yeah . . . That . . . Uhh . . . Yeah, there it is. A word of advice: Keep it in PM's. I don't understand the logic behind all the negative (And I guess those posters would use the word "brutally honest" rather than negative, but I, and a few other people who don't post on here, see this as negative.) posts on here, and therefore I would suggest it be kept to PM's. Or better yet, take it up with the people at Kiwanis themselves in a private meeting, either by phone, e-mail, videomail/phone, written letters, teleportation device, what-have-you. It doesn't make sense to me for anyone here to outright bash eachother, whether they're supportive or against KK (Or any of the organizations happenings). Actually, in my opinion (And I'm sure many people share this opinion, seeing as how there are people who, albeit turn out to be hypocritical on this, tell me this ALL OF THE TIME when it comes to Drum Corps and posting on these boards) it makes you all seem like rabbling five years olds . . . immature, if you will. So, if you can kindly take this mud-slinging contest out of here and elsewhere, where you can resolve it like mature men and women, please do so. In the mean time, I'm going to keep posting the updates and news coming out of Kiwanis for all of those still interested in wondering what is REALLY going on with this Corps that all of a sudden has so much support along with hatred from all sorts of people (Not neccesarily those on this board). Thanks, and please drive along. P.S. Duder, I appreciate the attempt to hurt my feelings (Need a reminder? Here: /sarcasm And Font, glad to see after a season at Trinity you're back and have apparently been appointed a staff member of the new KK. Thats pretty amazing. Congratulations! /sarcasm) but it didn't work. I lost a whole lot of respect for you (And you don't know how much I truly had for you, even though we've never met. Out of everyone, I was hoping to meet you the most at those camps.). I'm surprised, you of all people, would put me down for trying to support my Corps and bring it back from a near death experience. I'm doing it not as a favor to anyone, or to #### people off, but to finally do what I love most and do best: MARCH A FREAKING DRUM CORPS FOR A FULL SEASON, especially with one with so many cool people [And that's the truth]. So please, stop. And a reminder for everyone: Brass audition music is up. Check that out. Staff names will be added by the end of this week, or early next week. Our first camp is still December 1st through the 3rd. And, Kiwanis will be at the next DCI Board Meeting. Have a nice day.
  12. Audition music for all sections of the hornline are available on: www.kiwaniskavaliers.org It is the newest bulletin in the menu on the far right hand side. I would also like to personally thank everyone at the Flanagan Falcon Sound Invitational. Our first recruiting event of the season was a great success thanks to ALL involved. Special thanks to Debbie Schmidt, event coordinator, and Stephen Rivero , Director of Bands Please come and see the Kiwanis Kavaliers recruiting team at the Bands of America Regional Competition in St. Petersburg, Florida on Saturday, October 14th. Have you heard? We're Back.
  13. Yeah, check it out. :D There's also more news on my thread. Search for "Kiwanis Kavaliers" on DCP.
  14. There are some things that just havn't been able to have been released yet. All we ask is patience. It's hard to bring back a Corps to full stride after something so crippling as what happened last season. Every annoucement made or not made is done that way for a reason. Everything will be coming shortly. In the meantime: The Kiwanis Kavaliers Bulletin Board will be up shortly. Brass Audition Music is up: http://www.drumcorpsplanet.com/forums/inde...wanis+Kavaliers Open staff positions will be posted up soon (See? All in good time.) A press release will be up shortly, describing our new Corps Leadership.
  15. There are pictures up on the new KK website from this past Saturday's recruiting tent. We didn't take many pictures because we were rather busy all day - Don't believe me? Visit us sometime during our next shows. Note: Please navigate to the right on the main page. That's where the links are, along with links to the our Raffle article, and other stuff.
  16. My bad. I thought you were semi-asking about design changes. Sorry. :)
  17. We weren't told anything about that. Doug should've contacted the Board and the staff and told them he was doing this. If he decides to go on with this without talking to anyone from KK, more importantly the board, then there's going to be a mess started. And that's exactly what we don't need right now, seeing as how "messes" are things that cause Corps to go under. Tilt, about the website looking Canadian: I said it before, most of the designs will stay the same, but after talking to a couple of the staff while hanging out yesterday, stuff will begin changing as time goes on. The design of a website or uniform isn't exactly the most important thing right now. But to answer that question from before: That is the first priority of the Corps. I don't know if you can tell, but what we're doing takes a lot of time, and a lot of planning. The new administrative staff is working with the board of directors, and they'll be having some money coming in soon. As soon as that happens, money will start to be payed back. The board even told us, we will not be fielding until we pay off those members or atleast find a specific date in which everyone will be payed off. A Repetoire is currently in the works, and will be out to the public soon. Let me tell you, it's nice. As for this Staff member who told you they were under review to not be in Div. I, would you please PM me and tell me more? As in, who this was, what his position in the Corps was/is. As far as I'm concerned, Kiwanis is still going to be a Division I Corps. This is what I was told, and this is what we told all the kids/parents/people at the Flanagan show yesterday. Kiwanis will indeed be represented at the next DCI Board meeting, and will present a huge plan for fielding as a Div. I Corps. Every single little aspect is being looked at. This is a completely new Kiwanis. Kiwanis will be at the Hialeah Marching Band Competition and the Tampa/Tropicana Field BOA Show this weekend. Come by and say hello! I will be at the BOA show. Keep in touch with the new website, as there are going to be updates coming out.
  18. Quick correction: We were at the FLANAGAN show. Tilt hit it right on the head. I talked to the staff there, and there are a lot of updates coming up (And some I will tell you here) New website: www.kiwaniskavaliers.org It will be updated VERY frequently starting in the next day or so. Audition music will begin to be put up by next week. Along with the finalized staff, as they are being signed on. Large updates will be released very soon. First camp is on December 1st-3rd, in Miami, Florida. The location is being finalized and locked down, and should be available within the coming weeks. Today proved to us, as it will prove to you all, that Kiwanis Kavaliers is still in the mind of a lot of marching students, band directors, and plain ol' Corps people. At the show, we set up a large tent early in the morning. About two hours later, everything was running absolutely smoothly. We had a screen and projector set up, so whenever the bands would finish playing, we would play/show one of Kiwanis' show over the past few years. While bands played, we had a power-point running, showing the KK insignia, pictures, and the "DCI World Championships 2007" logo. At night, we pulled out the big (fun) guns, and set up a strobe light, rope light, up-right projector, circling the american flag over our heads (To show that we are indeed an American Corps now), and glow sticks. Thousands, and thousands of glow sticks. They were a hit. It was a lot of fun, talking with people who really wanted KK to come back, and with those who want to try out. People are obviously looking forward to these big changes, along with the move to Miami. We had (And are still having) a raffle going, in which a free X-Box 360 is going to be given away at the first camp. An announcement about the new director will be out soon. Again: Doug Darwin is NOT affiliated with the Kiwanis Kavaliers. For those who were wondering: Kiwanis have been working with their board of directors, setting things up. They are being represented at the next DCI board meeting (I forgot to ask if we were at the last one -- sorry), and bringing all their new ideas changes with them. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take a nice long nap. I've been up since 7 am, with only 3 hours of sleep behind that. There's more that I need to write, but I will leave it for tommorow when I can remember it.
  19. A few representatives from Kiwanis Kavaliers will be at the Park Vista, FL Marching Band Competition today, recruiting for our '07 season.
  20. No idea about DCI.org, but Kiwanis is still indeed here. No worries. www.pdxpercussion.net for news and updates on what's up with KK and PDX. Both organizations are going through a huge amount of changes, so just be patient. And, hey Tilt! It's Font.

  22. Yeah, I've got much respect for Fire Fighters and Volunteer Fire Departments alike, especially in the Drum Corps sense. This past summer, while I was with Trinity (Now folded), we had our all-days (4 weeks) in this small, little barely-on-the-map town called Florence, TX about 50 miles north of Austin. It was a really homey town, with a lot of nice folks, a public pool, AMAZING (If you EVER go to Austin, make sure you find Florence and visit this place) cafeteria/gas station/food stop called "D. Boone's" Anywho. During our rehearsals, this old dude with a red pick-up truck would always come out and watch us, and then joke with us while we took water breaks ("Sure is a hot day, isn't it?"). We then realized he worked with the Volunteer Fire Rescue. They helped us out a LOT. Always brought us water during those 110+ days on the asphault ('cuz we had no field-lining equipment), always talked to the football coaches so we could enter the locker-rooms to cool off. They even surprised us with a visit from their firetruck after rehearsal one day. They were the best, and to this day, I thank them for being there through those tough times and helping us all out.
  23. Hah. Yeah, gotta love that lil' old ghetto. Anyway. Yeah, I can name a few people who live near me who won't march because their parents decide that driving to Ft. Myers isn't worth it. This also gives more people a better chance with Sponsorships. Once those businesses see that the Organization is based nearby, they'll be be easier when it comes to giving money to these youngin's.
