IIRC, at some point bugles were 1 piston plus a slide. Piston was analagous to 1st valve; slide was second valve. Then in the mid 1960s a rotor replaced the slide.
To tie in a separate discussion here on DCP, it could be suggested that the current section that gets overlooked the most is the proper execution of a company front.
With all the griping going on about staffs and corps moving, how about coming up w/ shows that would be neat, but will never happen.
Example: Stravinsky meets Skynyrd: The Rite of Spring - Panama City Beach
Ballad now = Closer then, but 1976 BD "Chase the Clouds Away" (W/Bonnie Ott solo) was awesome
Another cool one was in 82 at DCI Midwest in Whitewater. During break between prelims and finals there was a HUGE thunderstorm. As it was clearing up, over the hill 27 Lancers were playing "Danny Boy" I was introducing a few folks to drum corps that night - 27 set the mood perfectly
One of my absolute best drum corps experiences was after BD won in Alton IL in the 90's (WSS/Romeo & Juliet show); they set up to play the concert and most of the crowd left so me & number one daughter headed down to front row 50 yard line and had our faces ripped off. Probably my favorite non-marching memory.
Wonder if that will impact Boston (who has their camps there now). Golly - maybe a 'price war' competing for members on basis of lower tour fees, better food, cooler tour, whatever. Final placement in the rankings is only one selling point.
They also have them in New Mexico. For fast Tex-Mex chain it is hands-down the best. When I travel on business to locations w/ Taco cabana, I always being home 2# of fajita dinners in carry-on. But w/ latest security that might not work any more :(
