  1. Anyone catch Adam Rapa? Lots of fracks and way out of tune at many points of Anthem. He must have had a bad night.
  2. I remember way back yonder, didn't have much money back then, so I had a dubbed blank cassette tape of 88 finals. I virtually eroded the magnetic material from this TDK cassette on Devils 88'. Melodic content, real virtuosic solo playing, bad ### tight forms, GE, Beautiful chicks with bad ### tans releasing balloons in the KC night sky where Okoye ran roughshod over defenses. I digress..... good feet and of course .......deadly execution,,,, Just what drum corps should still really be.
  3. How bout' an Araban's cornet exercise on the field? Try Madison Scouts 97...Cool, Now try taking that up the octave, maintain good fundamental sound (all overtones present) in upper tessitura and articulate lightly and nimbly like. Now try interlacing that with a spritely calypso groove... That's hard when i listen to that.
  4. Fave Single Section of all time 1992 - Cavaliers - Gavorkna Fanfare - Trumpet quasi double tounge / watered down MELODY feature Brass MELODY!!! after botched SOPRANO solo on a bad ### tune by Malcolm Arnold. --- Percussion feature f'ing bad! 1992 Blue Devils - Poison lick from multiple tenor 1990 - Devils - Percussion feature... They just don't write them that juicy and developed any more. Solo and MELODY work by brass line at the end of Tommy 1991 Devils - Soprano feature in Conversations (?)In Texas that feature would have received a two but I love it for it's ballsiness! Definintely not ballzheimers. Devils 1993 - Trio quartet (?) ensemble work by Scott and those bad baris(in a good way) Y'all know where. It's when Scott I guess, starts going into that 16 note lick, tounge two slur two upper tessitura bop ! WOW! 1989 Cadets - On my own Wow. 1989 Scouts - Make His Praise. It's just drum corps at it's finest and a truly underated show in Scouts lore. Actually, MHP is still a highly performed work for hs bands across the country! SLAUGHTER!!! The definitive version of this piece 1994 - Trio to open the show. That's pro level folks... Madison had some ringers through thier time line folks. Kids That to me always get my blood going. That call, you know. It's just a good mode to play those bulgles on. MORE LATER!
  5. 89 Regiment. You got to love the fine solo playing. Even with the simple brass book.
  6. I concour that the arrangements are rough. They sound like a bad Wayne Downey arrangement. I don't know if its the voicings, key sigs, or just the source material.
  7. Blue Devils 88' Rocking hornline, very musical...
  8. It is latent racism on elitist posters! It is also outright jealousy that the show band style or even to a lesser degree military band style (ala Texas A&M Fighting Texas Aggie Band) is loved and supported by most of the population black or white!
  9. Isn't Michael Cesario's brother Jeff Cesario?? I think he's made a niche for himself in the comodian business.
  10. You know on second thought, yeah.. some of that High Voltage stuff is weak but you get the gist. I know the Sacramento Freelancers tried a Chase show but it really wasnt as effective as it could have been. Can you imagine using an Echo-Plex with soloists throughout the field to get some of those great effects Chase and Don Ellis used to use?? Speaking of Don Ellis why not more of his stuff. It's ultra sophisticated! Not just the famous tunes but some of the obscure tunes he's done?? So much!! What about the compositions of Hank Levy< Rosolino? Urbie Green, More Watrous??? Not just TIger of San Pedro? Crap why not a Bllie May show. Didn't he have a string of hit records with just Brass??? #### Nelson Riddle???
  11. There is so much jazz material out there it isn't even funny. What about some of the mood and highly progressive charts Duke Ellington was doing at the end of his life? There is so much from the Thad Jones Big band, Brubeck, Golson, Mintzer, Bill Evans, Corea thta is yet to be attempted. You are right, it's not easy so arrangers don't even try. Heck if we go the way of electronics lets start hearing some Weather Report!! Maynard Ferguson High Voltage era anyone!???
  12. I too am concerned with the type of musician all corps are getting these days. Contrary to popular belief on this board, the quality level of the individual musician is declining. I think the true musicians, (Jeff Kivet, Harpo Blum, Chris Metzger, Dave Coolidge, Sean Owens, Edwin Bogart, Albert Dijikshroom, Chezirino, Morgan Larson, Scotty from Devils fame 93' Schipper)true players want nothing to do with the "music" most corps do these days. I only put up soprano musicians but the same holds true for all sections. If I were of age now adays, I would opt to go to Brevard, Blue Lake or just practice on my scales at home.etc... You just don't hear the near virutuosic stuff coming from brass lines anymore. Think back to 83. Madison. Listen to the cadenza in Strawberry Soup. Listen to the line Rich Labrizzi plays before Sean wails on the most orgasmic riff I've ever heard. Again most people on this board always rant about how hard stuff is now. I say bullcrap. The stuff most corps did in those days had more independent lines. That's more responsibility on the individual corps member then the block scoring you here now. Discuss.
  13. You will not hear jazz anytime soon with the current judging system. It's very difficult to clean and make uniform. It will not help you win! Wouldn't it be awesome if Madison would come out wth an Don Ellis show. Or perhaps a Kenton show. Or maybe a Chase show. Or perhaps a Jerry Hey tribute show!!! YEAH!
  14. Not talking about the halftime band, I'm talking about the pregame drumline....... The halftime band was as always out of sight. Though, those sounds would definately knock them out of the running.... sigh..
  15. Did anyone catch that one bass drummer who was really hyping the toes up and had good posture? Every now and then the production would go high cam and reveal how crappy the drumline A. Marched their dots or B. Dressed the form etc.... I couldn't help to think watching the pre game festivities with Cirque acrobats bands etc that this is Hopkin's dream of DCI. Weak! \
  16. I've used all three (Anchor, MegaVox, Long Ranger) and without question the Long Ranger wins hands down. Listen, when you are trying to cut the beat through a battery and bodies you need the most penetrating power for your money. Long Ranger wins hands down. Anchor has nice features but does not have the prescence of Long Ranger. MegaVoxes do not cut. Go with the NewMexico wonder. Even though it does tend to break down over the years. But then again, any electronic will wear under heat, stress and bumps and bruises of handling.
  17. Trust me they were doing matched "G" Concert middle C on G Bugle. Patterson, was bopped pulsed and full outed. Interval exercises were done and Greenie tonal concepts were established.
  18. IT HAS TO BE HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN>>> DON"T WE WISH THEY COULD GO BACK TO THIS!
  19. Please explain...... Did you attend a hornline rehearsal? Did you attend the winter camps when fundamentals were introduced? Nah...... Probably not.. Volume is relative bud.....
