  1. I know that I greatly enjoyed being able to see older shows on the Fan Network that I would have never purchased. I just don't want to spend $30 for a DVD to watch shows from 1983. But with Fan Network I can watch them at a very reasonable price. The only downside is that you have to wait a year for finals and the Allentown videos weren't that great - too orange from the lighting. But I expect that this year the quality of the Fan Network videos will be even better as the price of HD video has been dropping very quickly.
  2. Wouldn't a better parallel be if they allowed figure skaters to use snow mobiles as part of their performance? Hmm...... I like that.
  3. DCI should invest in one of these: http://gizmodo.com/5364634/12-billion-russ...aparazzi-shield
  4. Or something is declared illegal to impose someone else's sense of "right" on others.
  5. I'd hate to see 200 member corps on the field. I think it's getting too cluttered already, with all the chairs and stuff. ;-)
  6. My 13 year old daughter wants to be in a corps one day. I keep telling her to learn low brass but she thinks snare is the way to go. Kids.... (Edit: not a dig on low brass players by any means, just playing the odds.)
  7. Are personal recordings "illegal" or just "against the rules"? I think the worst that would happen is that you get ejected from the event. Now if you attempt to sell the recordings, then you're clearly breaking copyright laws. Is it against the rules? Yes Is it unethical? Probably Is it wrong? Depends on your moral compass Can anyone stop it? Nope, iPhones and dSLRs take great video now Is it illegal? For personal use, I'm not sure. Honestly, I think that far more revenue is lost by people copying DVDs for their friends and other members than by people taking video from their seats. The best way to combat it is by providing a higher quality product at a reasonable price. As far as the people that want to enforce the rules on their own treat it like when you would see someone speeding. Report it and let those handle it whose job it is to do so. Nobody appointed you deputy dog.
  8. I'm getting old. I'm finding less reason to go to DCI events and I'm getting more enjoyment out of watching Star United videos on YouTube. I want to like it, but I guess I have to realize that I'm not the target audience any more. Maybe the five minute anything goes segment will be played for audience enjoyment instead of playing for the judges. Rather than getting woodwinds in the corps, I think the five minute segment will just end up with longer shows as the next step will be judging the pre-show.
  9. Zero. I didn't have the money while in high school and spent the prime years in the Army. I think I misunderstood the age out rules and could have marched the year after I got out of the Army -- it was pre-Internet and info wasn't easy to obtain. So I choose to not look into the rules further and I'll just believe that I would not have been able to march that year. It's better that way. ;)
  10. This is too funny. Others are complaining that LOS is too quiet: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/...as-oil-stadium/
  11. How many complaints would there be that they were given an unfair advantage by being able to test drive their show in LOS?
  12. I don't know for sure with LOS, but Ticketmaster has exclusive deals with many venues. You couldn't hold a PTA convention without Ticketmaster getting a cut of the sales.
  13. Excellent point. I wasn't thinking from an HVAC perspective.
  14. You can tell if there is a chance of a storm and decide whether to leave the roof open or not. I wasn't suggesting that they hit the button and close the roof when they see something approaching. I was actually surprised that it only took twelve minutes. My initial thought was that it would be a several hour process.
  15. Still my favorite. It's the one show I carry around on my iPhone and watch from time to time. There are better shows, but this one just makes me happy. Just wish I had a better recording without the #### shout outs.
  16. I've read them. It's the only logical thing to do at least for the corps that are trying to nudge out the last .1 of their score to win.
  17. Thanks. Then I guess the only solution is to write your show to take advantage of the LOS weaknesses.
  18. Do we know for sure that the stadium does sound better with the roof open? I've been lurking and may have missed when bands or corps have played with the roof open. I'm talking about a typical band/corps competition where a quarter of the stadium is filled versus an NFL event where there are bodies in every seat to absorb sound.
  19. Your car is meant to be outside, has a roof that opens and closes yet the interior is not meant to deal with rain getting inside. Why? Because you close the roof when it rains. But you're right on one thing, Lucas was built for football not music.
  20. Do you have a drainage system in your car with a sunroof or do you just close the sunroof? The roof takes twelve minutes to open or close so it could be closed if a storm pops up. With modern radar any chance of rain can be easily monitored long before it would hit. Of course it would screw with the scoring and there would be all sort of controversy if they had to close between first and second place performances. I was wondering if they could do something with acoustic tiling to help deaden the echo, but then I read that the roof opening is 4.5 acres. So that's not economically feasible. I don't think there's a good solution and DCI is stuck for the next nine years. I just hope they got a really good deal on the stadium.
  21. I vote "yes". It's just like all the NFL tattoos worn by people that are fans of a particular franchise. Maybe this elitist attitude of you can't have a tattoo unless you marched is one of the reasons why corps are struggling for money all the time. Build the fan base. Now on a practical side, I wouldn't get one because no matter what corps tattoo you get they'll probably change their logo next year.
  22. I was talking drum corps in general. Or, just for you, I was talking about drum corp in general. ;)
  23. I'm probably going to be shot for this, but I'm shocked that tuition is that low. My guesstimate was $4-5k. I have a 13 year old daughter that wants to try out for a corps when she's 16. I'm all for it now.
  24. That was cool! Although I must admit that the second word in the title caught my attention. Heh.
