  1. One thing that bothers me is how a number of news outlets are reporting the results of the increased number of tests. They give the impression that, if you test positive, you're going to end up in an ICU, on a vent and that hospitals will be overwhelmed. According to what I've read, the majority of people who get the virus,I've seen numbers as high as 86%, will never show any symptoms. There also very little being said about the number of infected people who end up in the hospital and further , how many of those are in ICU and/or on vents. That's not to say we shouldn't be taking precautions, especially to prevent spreading to vulnerable people. But this information would provide a perspective.
  2. Wait, you're not in favor of Drum Corps Lite or Light ? :-)
  3. Yesterday ,Rutgers cancelled commencement. That was scheduled for mid/late May. This follows their previous cancellation of allowing outside groups access to their facilities this Spring. They postponed the Kentucky Derby,Preakness and French Open till the fall. Baseball will be begin,at best,mid/late May. As has been posted before, schools are closed. In some cases ,for the rest of the Spring . Does anyone think they will be reopened before fall ? We keep hearing that "things will get worse, before they get better". Everyday the list of things being cancelled/postponed,extends further out into the Spring/Summer. Does DCI have some type of crystal ball that says that the situation will improve enough in the next few weeks, to salvage the 2020 season ? Right now, there doesn't seem to be any indication of a "light at the end of the tunnel" . Given that,as much as I was looking forward to drum corps this summer,I think it may be time to "give up the ghost".
  4. I live in North Jersey. Went to the super market this morning. Pretty much normal except: 1.Lots of people wearing masks. But mostly regular dusk masks and they tended to be dirty. 2.People still hoarding water. This area has "City Water". So it makes no sense. 3.Apparently someone posted someplace that vitamins "C "and "E " could prevent corona. People were lined up at the vitamin display. I do intend to take advantage of the early hour, for us oldsters. I'm up at 5:30 every day anyway.
  5. Shutting down bars ,restaurants ,casinos, etc. statewide, like in NJ ,to "keep us safe" may sound reasonable. Unless you're someone who works in one of those places,or owns one. Unlike N.J.'s teachers, and government workers, these people don't have that kind of "safety net". People in the service sector, that rely on tips, also don't get much unemployment compensation. What's really concerning is that the shut downs are all "open ended". It also seems like everyday the list of things being being shuttered gets longer.
  6. Is there a way to read this without having to subscribe ?
  7. Kids getting infections is one thing. its an isolated incident. That's not the case here. Corona is a known problem. That makes a corps, schools, etc. potentially a lot more liable if someone tests positive for it. I wish I could go into more detail. I can say that the lawyer I spoke to isn't "Jacoby and Meyers'. Also, talked to an atty. who represents Boards of Educations. He agreed, that this is a concern.
  8. California has 6 counties in "shelter in place". Bergen County in N.J. is closing all malls, and trying to close most offices and construction companies, based on "moral authority" (That may not fly in court). Ohio cancelled its in person voting. As has been posted, one person comes down with this on tour and bye-bye tour anyway. There's also potential liability for places that house corps. Can't go into details, but a lawyer I know was saying his firm has fielded calls from a number of people wanting to sue for "lost wages",based on an exposure at a public institution. They didn't get infected, but had to "self quarantine" for 14 days. Someone from a corps test positive, the place they're staying at could be sued. Would they win, probably not,but you still have to deal with the suit. Even when infections drop, everything that has been shut down, has to get up and running again. That won't happen overnight. There's just too much uncertainty right now to tour this year.
  9. As far as I know,so far the NCAA has only considered an additional year of eligibility for Spring sports. I'm a college wrestling fan. Trying to do that for all winter sports, especially since, except for tournaments, they've played a whole season, creates all kinds of issues. One idea that's been mentioned for wrestling that seems to have a chance,is to grant an extra year to wrestlers who qualified for the NCAA Tournament.
  10. You may want to read what the Los Angeles just posted about mandatory "shelter in place" in 6 counties. As of today/tomorrow New York,NJ,and Conn. are closing all restaurants and bars, except for take out and delivery. Atlantic City casinos are shutting down,as are all NJ schools. Things are getting more restrictive, not less. The worst thing is,the restrictions/closures are "open ended". That makes the hope of finding housing even more tenuous. I also don't know how well "standstill " tickets will sell. Given everything that's going on,it doesn't seem fair to keep MM in limbo, when it appears more likely then not that a 2020 season isn't practical.
  11. In case you don't have a sweetie. According to a story on the radio this morning, "cam girls" are doing "land office business".
  12. Kind of like Kevin Bacon during the Homecoming Parade in Animal House.
  13. Just got an email from DCI for tickets to the 6/26,Allentown Show,7/29 ,Maryland Show ,and the Easts. If DCi is considering "pulling the plug",you'd never know it from this email.
  14. A number of colleges have prohibited any "non university" activity until at least June. There's also an article about schools cancelling "in person " graduation. So housing for corps in general (spring training/tour) may be tough. I would think that, if DCI does cut back the tour, tuition would have to be reduced proportionately.
  15. By any chance, did your "reliable source" have any information as to whether "backing out of agreements to house ",extends beyond April ?
  16. Actually, the number of US deaths was over 12,000
  17. I live in N.J. There's a growing trend of school districts shutting down "in person" learning. Bergen County just announced they will close all school districts next week. I know Ohio closed all schools. Just wondered ,for people who live in other states,if this is going on there ? I night on ESPN Tom Izzo was saying that, right now,Corona isn't really a big problem in Michigan. But that could change. Spoke to some friends who vacationing in Florida. They said its not much of anything there.
  18. There is also potential for a Public Perception problem if the 2020 Tour goes ahead. All of the events being cancelled, including the NCAA's, are "out of an abundance of caution for for participants and fans". U Conn.'s Women"s BB coach was talking tonight about concerns he about riding in the team bus,"interacting" with people ,etc. All these activities are shutting down. Drum Corps is supposed to be an activity for its participants. Whether you believe the cancellations are an overreaction or not ,consider the optics of DCI not cancelling their season, when so many others have. Also, think of the negative press if just on person tests positive on tour.
  19. Broadway is shut down indefinitely. This afternoon the NCAA cancelled March Madness (men's and women's). They also cancelled all Spring championships. That would include baseball and softball that go well into the Summer. Given that, what college will let a corps use their facilities for housing or a show. Personally, given just what happened today,I think DCI is just postponing the inevitable.
  20. A number of colleges are canceling any "outside activity" till June. I don't think there's any way to guarantee a corps won't lose a housing site or venue at anytime. More and more places are canceling events, including conference basketball tournaments or banning fans. Personally, given all the uncertainty,I don't think a "lets wait and see, and hope for the best" is the most prudent approach. I would hope DCI and the corps are in constant communication with housing sites and venues to keep up with the situation "in real time". If it does look like there may be problems, better to be safe then sorry. Several people, including me me,have posted of the potential of a positive test when a corps is at a housing site. Or,what if housing falls through for one or more events, leaving corps stranded ?
  21. Or what happens if a corps or staff member or driver for that matter gets a positive test result while they are there. Does the entire corps have to "self Quarantine" at that site for 14 days ? A number of colleges have canceled "in person" classes for the Spring semester. The Ivy canceled all Spring sports. Can't see these places "opening up" to house a corps. Most schools around here are "sanitizing" every night. Again, who picks up those costs if they house a corps ?
  22. A big concern with DCI is the "snowball" effect going on with Coronavirus right now. Whether you believe it is an over reaction or not,the fact is every day, every hour is more like it, more and more activities are being affected. Now no fans for March Madness. No one knows how far this will go. There is uncertainty with housing sites. What is most concerning is that any housing site or venue can say "no" to corps to using their facilities any time, including if a state's government does like Ohio did. Given all this,I don't know how long DCI can wait before deciding to "pull the plug" on 2020
  23. They already banned spectators from the MAC Tournament in Cleveland.
  24. According an epidemiologist I heard on the radio, there will most like be some recurrence of the virus next fall/winter. That's what has happened with similar virus strains in the past. He also anticipates that,by then,a vaccine will be available.
  25. Only 3 cases in state of Ohio, none at OSU . But they canceled in person classes till March 30. Whether you consider this an overreaction or not, things like this are creating disruptions in all kinds of activities. If schools do continue to shut down and have to be cleaned and sanitized,I can't see how this won't impact Drum Corps, including facilities for Spring Training.
