  1. I'm a cynic,so forgive me. Seems to me,the fact that its this difficult to find out if YEA operates the Cadets, should set off a whole bunch of red flags. Just from the posts on DCP I would also think that YEA is aware of the questions. Shouldn't be anything stopping them from contacting DCI and giving them the answer.
  2. Agree with you 100%. But,as a dinosaur,I'm of the opinion that the mistake was DCI allowing the sound to be electronically created in the first place. Yea,I know, water under the bridge. Never going back, etc.
  3. Judges sitting in the stands has/is an issue at the Cadets Clifton Shows. A few years ago Clifton redid their stadium ,and put in a 400 meter track and synthetic turf. This "shifted" the field, so that the center of the Press Box is now on the 35 yard line, not the 50. Because of this, they end up sitting at least some of the Judges at the top of the stadium,on the 50. In addition to losing these "Super Premium" seats, the Judges loudly "jabber" away into their recorders through each corps' shows. Its very distracting/annoying,especially these are sold as the "best " seats.
  4. After I read this post,I talked to a friend of mine whose daughter plays saxophone. He said saxophones have all kinds of problems with weather (humidity, drizzle, you name it). He said that, when its raining, some high school bands where he lives, "pull" their woodwinds. He also said that their sound doesn't "carry". So,unless you're very close to them ,you can't hear them.
  5. Nothing left to change ? Surely you jest. 1. True,"Back To The Future" Hover Boards 2.Virtual reality headsets with special effects. 3.Anti gravity belts The creative options are endless.
  6. If you knew nothing about the activity, and heard the term Drum Corps, you would most likely conclude it pertained to drums, only.
  7. I keep seeing all these posts about WW. The proposal is for AI. If this passes,I'll donate $1000 to the first corps to march a Concert Harp for an entire show. (pit doesn't count)
  8. Blast, the original, had a lot of traditional drill and was,as I recall, all brass. Blast, the second, went in another direction, with woodwinds, including on trampolines, very limited percussion ,and some very artsy "shower curtains" . It bombed at the box office. As far as a previous poster's Crique on a football field comment. Gonna be hard to set up a trapeze and high wire on a football field.
  9. Maybe,in honor of DCI's AI proposal, someone can come up with a new instrument. The "Buffoon".
  10. So, if this passes ,can we anticipate an oboe or bassoon soloist ? Does anyone know if a "kazoo" is considered a musical instrument ? I for one can't wait to hear the harmonica when a corps plays "Thunder Road".
  11. Sorry, but I don't think DCi corps' 12 minute or so shows ,on a football field, approach the performance level of Cirque,River Dance, Blast Etc.. Those shows use performers, who perform year round and, lets not forget, are being paid. Not the other way around. They also have a full, paid, support staff. Heck,Cirque travels with a full culinary set up. I also think you're over estimating the marketing /entertainment value of drum corps. Some people love it. But it will always be a "niche" activity. You're also limited by the fact that you can only sell a portion of any venue. As far as "smart people running these corps" ,based on recent examples, especially when it comes to finances, that's an oxymoron. Ticket prices will continue to rise. But people already complain about them. Plus,do you really think people are going to pay big bucks to sit outside,in the heat ,humidity and rain ,fighting off bugs ?
  12. Just got an email from DCi for the 2020 Rules Proposals. They are up on DCI's website.
  13. You present an interesting concept. My question is,how can you pay for it ? From what has been posted on other threads,a number,if not the majority of corps are already swimming in a sea of red ink. Its been stated that membership dues don't cover an individual member's costs. Putting on a show/tour that would be considered "Professional Entertainment" takes more then props and speakers. Fans already complain about the cost of tickets. So,where do you get the money to do this ?
  14. If you don't know the story, after Burrow's Heisman speech they started a Go Fund Me for the Athens Food Bank. Raised over 400K in just a few days. Ohio also started selling a "Pass it Forward" Tee shirt, with all proceeds going to charity. They are also selling a He Is the Man shirt. Couldn't get the images to post. If its not against DCP's rules you can see them at www.bobcatgear.com
  15. As a Bobcat Alum,Thanks. But actually I was referring to the State of Ohio. The State was trying to require the same system for all public colleges. Ohio State fought semesters screaming and kicking. Why ? Football. When they were on quarters, they didn't start classes till mid/late September. That gave almost a month of "class free" practice. Now they start classes the week before Labor Day And going O.T. Really hoping the kid from Athens,Oh.can pull off a win for the National Championship.
  16. Funny, after studying the matter, Ohio switched to semesters. There are pluses and minuses to both. What seems to having more of an impact on colleges is the explosion in on-line classes. They are not only cost effective, but can really speed up getting a degree. A perfect example is the number of "Grad Transfers" in athletics.
  17. Thing is, they don't say they "love" it. In fact, other then their child, they show no real interest in the activity. They say things like "I'm at the show because my son or daughter is in ___________." What's also interesting is how many of the parents never even heard of drum corps till their kid made a corps.
  18. I find it interesting that, when you talk to people at drum corps competitions, a number of them are corps member parents who only started following the activity because of their child. They make it clear that their interest will end when their kid leaves. Adding WW won't change that. It also seems, based on purely empirical observations, that only a limited number of former corps members, become hard corps fans when they stop marching. Again, adding WW won't change that either. As I've posted,if marching band is so popular, why isn't there a Summer marching band circuit, similar to drum corps. As someone else posted, adding WW to Drum Corps has one big plus for show designers. They can use the same design for their high school band and the corps they design for. Given the number of "band people" designing for corps, what's not to love ? At least for them.
  19. A few years ago my wife and I were sitting the stands in Bayonne, waiting for the first Bridgemen Alumni Corps show. The guy sitting next saw my OHIO jacket and said he was in the Marching 110 and was now a member of the Bridgemen. I asked what he played. Saxaphone . He said he wanted to march with the Bridemen,so he learned to play a horn. Don't remember which horn. Would have liked to get into more detail with him,bit he had to leave to warm up with the corps.
  20. That's an interesting statement "to have everyone be equal no matter what instrument they chose". What''s the next step, have everyone be equal ,regardless of how well you play that instrument. No more auditions. Each corps just holds a lottery. Oh,and how can the activity be equal ,if you have to be able to march. As has been posted here, not everyone can participate in every activity. Also,if there is this overwhelming desire for making drum corps into marching bands, why isn't,to the best of my knowledge, there a Summer marching band circuit like DCI ?
  21. Actually, they now do both flat and "tilted" Their snares are flat for most halftimes. But they still march with the traditional "tilt' for things like the Skull Session, pregame and parades.
  22. I have to disagree with you a bit on OSU. They have changed their style completely since Dr.Woods left. No narration or signing. But props (posters ) Special effects (fire extinguishers to simulate smoke) Stick figure formations One of my friends who saw the TBDBITL in person last year said it felt like a BOA show. If you watch some of their recent shows, the band isn't what it used to be.
  23. The synthetic (Astro) turf at Franklin Field was basically a carpet on black top. Today's synthetic turfs are much improved, but still hold a lot of heat. Especially in places like Florida and Texas. Dark colored turf makes it even worse. A number of synthetic turf fields in places like Florida have sprinklers to cool them down. In fact, Field Turf now has a system that circulates cold water under the turf to keep it cool. Then again,we had one site where they tried to cool the synthetic turf using a fire dept's aerial snorkel. The results weren't pretty. The water circulation system can also work in cold weather. When the Vikings were building their new dome, they had to play their home games at the University of Minn. The Vikings paid for installing a new synthetic turf field that circulated hot water,to keep the turf from freezing.
  24. Well we did get a Super Bowl at Met Life. Like I posted,it comes down to priorities. If Buffalo feels playing outdoors in bad weather is essential, then no dome. The only alternative is to have a retractable roof, which is a lot more money, and have the NFL give up control of when a stadium roof can be open
  25. The question is who will own the stadium. This came up when Giants/Jets built Met Life. They had considered putting on a roof. But,I was old by representatives of the Giants that,if they did,the NFL,not the teams. control when the roof can be open or closed for games The Giants/Jets feel playing outside in bad weather is an advantage. So no roof. Buffalo is the same. They tout playing outside in bad weather. If the facility is not owned by the team they may want a roof for year round events, even if it has to stay closed for Bills' games in bad weather. If the Bills build it,they have to decide is playing outdoors in bad weather is enough of an advantage to limit the stadium's use.
