'92 Star is the only patriotic show I've ever truly loved.

Double Standard
Captncontra replied to noneofyourbusiness's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Yeah I was driving the rig for Esperanza in '05. We went to a couple shows in Louisiana and had a free day in New Orleans (2 months before Katrina. Sad that the city is still a mess, best free day ever.) The heat and humidity those kids had to endure was absolutely brutal. I'll take the dry 125 degree heat in Death Valley over the 95 degree heat with 98% humidity any day. Felt like I was trying to breathe deep in a sauna. -
The human voice and drum corps
Captncontra replied to zig zig ZAG's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
It isn't voice that's the issue, its the amplified over the corps part that has everyones panties in a twist. Unplug and sing away... I don't recall anyone having issue with VK in '92 when they sang "We loooooove to fly, and it shows!" -

No they wouldn't, they'd be disqualified. People would wonder,"Why is this marching band here to compete against our drum corps?" -
What defines a Drum and Bugle Corps?

... but there are strings in the pit now. So time for a name change? Drum and Bugle and String Corps? DCSI? -

Electronics related rules
Captncontra replied to jblamb1401's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
So all that needs to happen is corps need to ask Yamaha/Pearl/Dynasty/Jupiter to make a flute/clarinet/sax with a mic built in and now its electronic, right? Flute can't be heard over the corps without the mic so its in the same boat as the bass... Sadly I'm not following DCI anymore after seeing/hearing the horrible sounds coming from the over-amped pits with terrible clashing electronic noise this weekend. To quote South Park: Token: I'm not playing anymore. Stan: Uh, well wait, what'd you see? Token: I don't know, I don't wanna know. I'm out. -
Synthesizers in drum corps
Captncontra replied to camel lips's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
I must be blind then because I've read every page of that thread and can't find the answer... I see someone say yes, guitars are legal. What about the rest of my question? Can they build a mic into a ww and its now legal? It's technically electronic now... -
Ok, every time I open a thread to ask this specific set of questions my thread gets closed and I'm pointed to another thread that doesn't answer my questions. So I'm going to ask it in every thread they pointed me to: So I read all the posts linked to my closed thread and not a one of them directly answers my question: Are ALL electronic instruments allowed, including string bass, guitar, keyboards, mic'd flutes, and saxes with extention cords tied to them? Again, I thought the electronics rule was specifically for the use of a synth/keyboard, i.e. a synth playing the sound of an electric bass, not allowing an actual string bass in the pit. If its allowing the use of any powered instrument, is there anything not allowed or can corps contact dynasty/yamaha/pearl and have mics built into a woodwind and now its considered legal?

The electronics rule
Captncontra replied to Captncontra's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
I ask because an actual bass guitar is being used (which I thought was still not allowed), NOT a synth playing a bass part (which I thought WAS allowed). -

I thought the electronics rule was put in place so that synth/keyboards specifically would be allowed to add 'effects' to the pit. Now Spirit has an electric string bass in the pit. Soooooo... are ALL electonic instruments allowed? What defines an electronic instrument? Can you tie an extention cord to a sax and its legal? What about an electric violin? What if you have Yamaha design a flute with a microphone built in? Would that make woodwinds legal?
-
I'm confused... thats a stringed electric bass right? How is that even remotely legal? Are violins now allowed as long as theres a power cord running into it? Does any instrument count as legal now as long as its sound goes through the mixer? Maybe tie an extension cord the bell of a sax and say its electronic?

It doesn't matter if the parts are doubled or not. Having multiple sources of bass muddies it up so much that you can't hear what the tubas are playing. Here's an example: I marched with Riverside Community College in '96. We played latin jazz and had 16 tuba players, 9 of which had corps experience and could play well and loud. One bass player in the pit playing similar parts completely smothered anything we could play. Could you tell that we were playing? Yes, but you couldn't tell WHAT we were playing at all. Doing a rock-themed show is great, but don't recreate a rock band playing rock music. Emulate a rock band with horns and drums...
-
Seems to me all they're doing is hurting their recruitment efforts. As a contra player, why in the world am I going to go out there and carry a heavy ####### horn that can't be heard because no matter how loud I play, the synth can just turn it up yet another notch? Doubling the bass part on a synth shows a complete lack of faith and respect in the contras. Honestly, why have a contra section at all? Move em all to euph since they really aren't adding to your synth bass at all... ... sorry... tuba.

Do we know if Vanguard is getting new aussies to match the new uni's? The different shades of green seem odd to me.
