  1. So .... if kids aren't doing drum corps these days, what are they doing? What's new today that wasn't around thirty-five years ago? [as I type this on my PC...]
  2. Hmm, my goals are a bit arrogant...but it works: + Don't be a B****. + Do in the show what I do in rehearsal. + Don't let frustration stop me from getting better. + Be focused enough to apply corrections on the 1st rep.
  3. It still happens...especially as I&Es and Finals gets nearer :)
  4. Ziploc Bags! + of all sizes....great for storing wet socks/undies, keeping electronics dry, organizing/separating things, etc... Extra Socks + one of my favorite things about Tour is the feeling of putting on a pair of fresh, dry socks at lunch after a rough drill block on wet grass Carabiner(spell?) + to clip stuff to ur backpack (horn towel, water bottle, etc) It's always nice to have a free hand when sprinting from drill to sectionals. Duct Tape + The possibilities are endless. Mortar + For the times when you need to craft brick walls. Ruger SR9 + Always better to be safe then sorry. AR-15 + Because an SR9 is just not enough when Velocioraptors strike.
  5. MOAR!! [/trolling] p.s. sweet! new radio buttons for the polls
  6. Voted Keep Corps, Change Traditions. Well Traditionally, there were Fifes (spell?). They are woodwinds. Last time I checked, the activity evolved as opposed to died off. IMO, there is only so much you can do with woodwinds before the score ends up being docked. We tend to lose sight of a simple concept: survival of the fittest. As a general rule of thumb, things don't change unless there is an inherent need. Personally, I don't really see a need for WW's outside of solo work on the sideline, but it's not my decision. The name of the activity is Drum and Bugle Corps (short: Drum Corps). A major company name is Drum Corps International (short: DCI). Therefore, if WWs are implemented, the only names that have to change are the individual corps that choose to utilize them. As much of a modernist as I may be, I'm not going to pay to march in an organization that has me doing basics side-by-side with woodwind players.
  7. Phantom 2006 Phantom 2006 (again) SCV 1988 Troopers 2008 ---well, didn't really tell a story but was consistent with its theme :P Bluecoats 2008
  8. Haha, Man, that was one of the roughest shows that I've been a part of. My high school football team made finals in 2008 and the venue was Giants Stadium! Cool! Well, maybe too 'cool'. It was snowing that day. The football teams still played and the band director gave us the 'OK' to perform at half time. In ways, I was excited; In ways, I was upset. I was in a marching band that performed in a very prestigious place! I played a King Euph. Ouch. That weather threw my horn into something close to the key of A; that is, when my valves weren't frozen. Marching on that slippery field felt like marching on a freshly waxed wooden floor. Nobody fell that day (surprisingly). We finished, people clapped, the WW players couldn't move their fingers very well, and we had hot chocolate. Character was built that day. Edit: grammar
  9. Lolz, maybe it's b/c my pockets are empty, but I think it'd be cool if they decided to use the Mil to cut all of the member's tour fees to $0 for a season.
  10. Whoa, since when was this a democracy? Edit: close plz
  11. More or less, I feel like DCI is marketing to the correct crowd. A huge problem that we deal with is the declination of members marching and the declination of drum corps available. So, I feel like DCI markets to the bandspeople out there to help recruitment, which in turn keeps the activity alive. Yes, it would be Uh-Maze-Ing if I didn't have to explain Drum Corps nor having to explain that I don't play a drum, but with limited resources at their disposal, I feel like DCI is making some good decisions regarding advertisement. (bad grammar, too lazy to fix it )
  12. On Air (07 Phantom) is my favorite show, and so there it goes; a vote.
  13. Euphonium! However, due to intonation issues with marching euphs, you'd be pretty safe on a Bari. And go with the 5G. I'm biased in saying this, but I believe they allow sufficient air with great control across the range of the horn
  14. Disipline. It is a waste of time if you feed information to a member that isn't willing to receive and apply it. Example: Shaping a musical phrase. If a player is completely overshooting the dynamic, then after receiving the necessary info, they should fix their mistake. If they choose not to do so, then they are creating wasted reps and wasted time in telling them again to fix the same thing.
  15. Gotta go with Journey of One From watching vids, I was caught between Crown's "Bell-isimo" and Glassmen's "Journey of One". Went with the latter because I liked the music and the effect much better....and the Glassmen had a pretty strong hornline that year EDIT: grammar stuffs
  16. My fav was some kid wearing this shirt: BorinBâ™: "We took the 'g' out of Boring."
  17. Haha, this is a good thread! One time in 08, someone pulled the fire alarm at terminal B in Newark....NOT Fun. And if I'm not mistaken, that was also the same camp where the heater in the facility was busted....also NOT Fun. But now that I'm looking back at it, it is pretty funny
  18. Wait, what? this almost doesn't make sense. Imagine if I said that you lost. You placed second. The first question that would ask me is "how come". And the second question would be "by how much". The system we have is a result of the second question. Yes, it sucks to lose by a tenth of a point, but a loss is a loss. I believe the current system is fine. If a corps loses by .2 of a point, that is a numerical representation of what took place on that field. Just by looking at a sheet of scores, I can expect that those two corps were very identical in their skill, yet maybe one extra breath in the closer led to a broken chord that the other corps didn't have, thus placing them below. Or even maybe a missed horns up. The point is, the current system eliminates unnecessary questions and overall, saves time for both the judges and the corps staff. For instance, if my corps places below your corps by .2, I will know what section i noticed was weakest and get on it the next morning. If my corps places behind ur corps by about a full point, then I will work on many weak spots and try to create a more stable base for my performers. However, if all I was told was that I placed 2nd, then I will probably go with yet another option and have the corps spend time on one or two weak areas. So, in essence, the ordinal system would completely change game plans and provide many unnecessary answers
