  1. For the sake of this discussion, how does a good natured rip off get away with it? Would it today? I'd argue that's mostly the end goal for most corps these days anyways.
  2. This was the original reason this idea came to mind. If corps aren't playing full pieces anyways, when only 20 seconds of a 3-minute piece is recognizable, why spend the money? Especially with so little return? As someone who is not an arranger, honestly, is that much harder to write a piece in the style of swing v. just arranging Swing Swing Swing for drum corps?
  3. I guess that's my point then. The agreement should be for full rights, just like how drill works. I get it, the costs are different and the effort is different, but we're talking about an activity where most staff members make less than $2k for their 90-day commitment. Everyone volunteers their talents in this art to a point. Also drill is definitely resellable. Aren't there tons of Band in a Box programs out there, with pre-programmed scalable drill? How is a line that contorts into a box in 16 counts performed by 64 horns (no copyright problems) so different from a 16 count 8th note run performed by the same 64 horns? The argument I'm making is obviously for drill to be protected under IP law better, but for the purpose of the activity I'd rather see arrangers going the open source drill route.
  4. No trolling then, wouldn't it be assumed that a Saucedo (or any publisher) would automatically release the rights to the corps? Isn't that exactly what drill designers do, since their artistic work is being written exclusively for XYZ corps? I guess I've always viewed original drill and original music the same, but I'm not sure if that's the case. It's been a long time since my IP classes in college.
  5. Cavies were all original music from 00-03, right? If those shows were to be performed this year, Flo could theoretically show them any time they wanted, correct?
  6. I'm not the biggest fan of the show, but when I saw them live it was extremely apparent that Mandarins came to play this season. Strong corps, great sound, a ton of confidence. Looking forward to seeing them in Finals and hopefully building on this season in the future. NorCal's about to own 25% of the Finals spots!
  7. I just discovered something cool: Flo has all of the World Class performances (high cam) from the Rose Bowl show available to watch. But every single one of them has this message below the video: It's a new world, a new activity. Our activity has evolved greatly over the last few years, and we now have the capability to have shows from the current season available on a subscription basis on demand! But this entire function doesn't work because of copyright laws. Now, copyright laws have a place, I'm not debating that at all. But corps need to own their music. It's not a matter of 'just getting through the season' anymore, they're developing marketable content that unfortunately cannot be effectively marketed. And that's because they don't own their music. They basically rent it, and only a part of it. The first solutions is simple: Want more? Spend more! But this is a cash-strapped activity, so that solution doesn't fly. In my mind, this leaves only one solution left: corps need to play all original music every year. Just like how the drill is written for them, just like how the guard work is written for them, the music needs to be written for them! What say you, DCP?
  8. Madison Scouts 07. There was so much potential in that show that was never realized.
  9. Life got busy from 2011-2014 and I missed out on some things. I had no clue that a post-1980s Spirit ever beat Cavaliers. Wow!
  10. Not sure if there's a nomination for that 'win the day' part of DCP, but I'd like to nominate Karuna for today's award.
  11. Even when I was marching, I remember everyone pulling scores from BK's site. I too went looking for it yesterday, but it looks like it's gone. Side note: I also miss corpsreps. DCX is great, but it's not corpsreps.
  12. Well, ####, that appears to be correct. I thought I remembered Rondinaro saying that on the 06 DVD somewhere, but looks like I (or he) was incorrect.
  13. Is there a breakdown somewhere of how corps get money from shows? Is it even money if you perform at, or does placement count too?
  14. Also fun fact: 2006 was the first time that the Finals lineup included the same 12 corps as the year before. So 73-05 each have at least one newcomer compared to the previous season.
  15. 2001 Magic of Orlando (Did not compete at Finals), Seattle Cascades (2nd D2, 17th D1) 2002 Magic of Orlando 11th, Seattle Cascades 12th
  16. Just to echo the other side of the table, think about Bluecoats 2007. First time in their history they beat Blue Devils ever, and around 4th of July I thought that would be their first year to medal! Then, 7th. It's a long season for a reason.
  17. Watching on Flo on Roku. Stream is solid so far. This little group is putting out some good sound!
  18. I'm taking my wife to dinner and a concert tonight. She'd be mad if I spent the whole evening on Periscope, right?
  19. When is the last time SCV beat BD at any show? I know they won at the Seattle show in 2004, and I really think that was the last time.
  20. I got to hear Academy in a standstill last night and they sound outstanding. That ballad is glorious. I can't wait to hear how tonight goes for them, and I can't wait to see all these corps live at the Rose Bowl next weekend!
  21. I don't know anything about her, I thought her only marching experience was 06 Cadets (she was Alice, right?), which didn't really feature her guard skills? Can anyone elaborate more? Purely curious.
  22. My wife surprised me with a 'guys night' for Father's Day for this Saturday, so I'll be missing the Stanford broadcast. But we're going to Pasadena next weekend in person, so I'll be able to catch the lineup then. Alright drum corps season!
  23. I took like to wear long flowing dark leather in the summer months.
  24. Not sure if you're familiar with the area, I'm talking the marketing manager at Remedy's on St. Rose. She's giving me their separate dining area if I can get enough people (we're still discussing what 'enough' is) since we'll be ordering food/drinks all night. The room has two TVs already, and if we get the whole room I'm going to get a projector screen for the laptop too. And let me know if you're in town Ghost! St. George isn't far at all, would love to have a few more folks!
