  1. My first choice would be for 1988,the whole of the top 12 and beyond were just cooking on gas man.For all round greatness has to be 88. Next two for obvious reasons 90 and 91,my VHS's are wearing thin, but i love the VHS tapes with all the steve and co's commentary, AND, im on camera back field in 91 during the last time through F tuning, back on the floor, givin it large, not on the DVD <**> Lets go back to full commentary, introductions and on the road again. The DVD's,although supierior picture quality, are too detatched from the spirit of finals night. The full top 6 live on PBS is stuff of legends.
  2. Do your audition with a euph and tie lead to the bell and be rock solid. You will become a machine.
  3. 1989- SCV by a mile. The much, much better of their two Phantom of the Opera shows. This is THE best sounding corps I have ever heard, practically perfect. I don't know what you mean by "balance issues," but this IS the best corps I have ever heard. Incredible, emotional music. Phantom had a solid show, but on a completely different level than Vanguard. In no way disrespecting your opinion but you must be listening to something else, maybe you have your years mixed up ?
  4. SCV 2000 A supurbly constructed production of biblical proportions, the mix of Barber and Bartok is just deliciously dark and of course Adagio still gives me goosebumps. BD 2000 one of the only post 94 devil shows i like, real in your face,on the edge of your seat stuff, and i still dont know how they generate those artificial screams(great effect). BD 84 the mother of classic 80's drum corps, the enegy, the passion, the pure effortlessness. Any Phantom ballad ever.Speaks for itself.Chocolate for eternity.
  5. DCM,are you "ANT" who came to BD from dutch boy with Toni ???????? If you are.......................DOOOOOOOOOOD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Im the mello player from London (UK) roomied with herbie the scot.
  6. It was generally known throughout the members as told by vets that the BD 85 hornline was the loudest animal to ever grace the astroturf.
  7. BD 90,nope,its was written that way Phantom Regiments contra line 1990 during the "elephant" from carnival of the animals, its on the PBS VHS,MEGA foot phasing, its so bad there playing down beats on the up beat of their feet.
  8. I am just a puppy at ONLY 35 but this thread is great.Im only up to page 60 and need to rest my scroll finger, plus the wireless mouse is going flat. I shall return.
  9. SCV 88 was far supierior to the 89 winning show,in my humble opinion. The horn line from 89 was dirty i thought, just listen to the solo's,especially the sop solo from 89,really bright, borderline sharp. Just not as much power and passion as 88,just compare music of the night company fronts from both years. You will be in no doubt. Im not baggin' on SCV,only my opinion. PS Just watched SCV 2000....now thats what i call a show, love that Bartok stuff.
  10. If Dynasty horns are really bad (and as a drummer who hates Dynasty drums, I'm prone to believe you guys) then how do the Blue Devils keep winning high brass? Do they get special horns that aren't factory stock? The Compositions and staff, and the cream of the crop when it comes to auditions. Success will breed success.
  11. Just pulled off the original format in SATB of Salvation is Created at the Choral Public Domain Library Just type in "Salvation" and print off in PDF,im doing a brass arangement right now. www.cpdl.org
  12. Where can i hear Primordial light and Salvation please ? Can someone put a link up ? Many thanks.I love this kind of material coming from a brass line, its what keeps me standing in front of one .

    King Bugles

WoW ,your collection is an awesome legacy of THE best horns ever to grace a football field
  14. Great show, great contra feature from carnival of the animals, but check the vid of the backward high mark time marching...ouch.....tick,tick,tick.
  15. My thread comes from a thought i had about my age out in Devil's 91..... In the few weeks leading up to nats, and from the first time we met Star our two respective hornlines were battling it out at each show for the high brass trophy. My question to you guys is;;; Do you prefer the clinical, technical excellence, almost professional, sound that star had that year(or any year really) or the ##### against the wall, raw energy sound.? I ask this because although Star's line had an amazing technical, clinically perfect book,we still took them for the high brass trophy at finals, even though BD had a less than perfect brass performance. It was just that we had the energy, the drive and the passion to take that caption. And do judges take that emotional aspect of brass performance in todays show's ? Or do lines not have that passion now and just go for the clinically perfect show ?
  16. In Devil's 91 us four mellophone's were using Warburton's,no idea of the model # ,but i do remember that they had a nice smooth rim that did'nt cut into your lip.Maybe someone could enlighten me to the model #,it was Soooooo lond ago my memory is fading.
  17. Still got all my parts for mellophone for the 91 BD show "adventures in time" Great mid voice parts, really meaty, crazy time sig's. love it. Dont think my fingers can move as fast now days.
  18. Are there any web sites that you know of with a selection of mouthpieces ? I have moved to playing Baritone and i dont really like the feel of a 6 1/2 AL or a 12 C I like the idea of the smooth rim of the shilke but i dont know, what do you think ?
  19. Based on DCI Finals 2003,i would say for all round sound quality i would go with the Cavvies,so in tune and so crisp,at times it sounded like one player. For solid upper brass power and cleanliness, that would go to BD And for the rich lower brass has to go to PR ( my overall favorite package of '03 ) Sorry guys but CBC just did'nt cut it for me this past season.
  20. Ahh the memories of being in the BD horn line,if only for two seasons, those space chords gave me goose bumps, much copied by others but never bettered. I'll never forget the build up,Wayne's arms waving erratically his heavy intake hiss of breath just before the open 5th C/G resolve.Ear bleeding, brain pulping magic. and to top it all, then came the raised thumbs for F-Tuning. WOW MAAAAN i want a time machine from santa !!!!!!!!!!
  21. Well in that case Chris my place in that fire and brimstone netherword is assured, because in my rookie year with BD 1990 i had a baritone friend marching SCV,and he took us for a tour of Vanguard hall and in one of the back rooms was that chair for the phantom magic effect Im sorry to confess that i broke it,an accident i assure you ^0^
  22. The guy's my hero.I also had the pleasure of marching under him,but then he was just a lowly mid-voice tech in BD 90/91 check out his cool solo from BD 85 i used to try and copy his solo playing along with the video He was my inspiration to join dev's he can do no wrong in my book and its SCV's gain. FTV
  23. Does anyone from CA have a real 2COOLVK licence plate ?
