  1. Well, I had intended to go back to the Sam Ash store where I bought the pad to see if I could try their demo pad on any of their stands. I didn't go yet, but I have free time to do so this weekend. I'll definitely post an update with pictures if I find a stand that works well. Thanks for following up! Those are some good ideas, Kevin. Thanks for the response. The bottom of the pad doesn't have that threaded screw-in capability, though. I noticed some Remo pads have that capability, and it seems fairly useful. I'm not at home right now to take a picture of the bottom of the pad, but I found this one online. Look at the right where the hand is: The purple border is the wooden base, and then there's a thin, black, foam-like disc lying on top of that. That foam-like surface is sturdy enough to practice on and tire out your muscles on. As you noted, this probably means it's probably designed for countertop playing. I still want a stand, though, so I don't have to always be at the counter when I practice. I might end up going with your build idea if I don't find a suitable stand. I'll go check out some stands first, and then if I can't find one that holds it high and steady without the grips getting in the way, I'll consider the DIY method you proposed. I just want it to be sturdy, stable, and comfortable. Looks aren't important. Edit: Also, I'll go email Vic Firth. I don't know why I didn't think of that before. :)
  2. Thanks for the input! If I get a stand that fits it well, I'll post information about it here.
  3. Thank you for the recommendation. Yes, I will be standing when I use it. If I use a concert snare drum stand, wouldn't the three "hands" at the top of the stand get in the way since the Slim Pad is so thin, unlike an actual drum? For reference: http://static.musiciansfriend.com/derivates/18/001/267/277/DV016_Jpg_Large_491339.jpg Edit: I found a practice pad stand that deals exactly with that issue: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/drums-percussion/tama-practice-pad-stand However, the stand only allows for practice pads up to ten inches in diameter, and the Vic Firth Heavy Hitter Slim Pad is twelve inches in diameter.
  4. I want to buy a stand to hold my Vic Firth Heavy Hitter Slim Pad, but I don't know what kind of stand to get. I'll only be using the stand at home. I'll probably order it online or drive out to get it if I can find it in the Southern California area. Can anyone please provide suggestions or model numbers for me to look up online?
  5. I've never heard of anyone being ashamed of this. Who are you talking about?
  6. I didn't negate the fact that we live in the USA nor that we have freedom of speech. That was an unnecessary comment. To me, it seems that you are trying to push the opinion onto others, like I had stated in the comment you replied to. You tend to provide your opinions as though it is fact. For example, you stated that "The TILT is just a gimmick" and that "It's NOT easier to play like that". There was no reference to those being personal opinions or personal styles of play. They were stated as though they are universal facts. Also, I don't think it's a "big deal" to begin with. People can play great with either form and have many reasons to use one or the other, as has been stated within this thread. It's simply a matter of personal (or directorial) preference and ideology. Cheers.
  7. When I first watched 1989 on video, I was already a huge fan of the stage production. I've always loved the music from Phantom of the Opera, and seeing SCV perform it seemed to bring the best of two worlds together for me. I didn't go to finals night for either year because I was too young and didn't even know what drum corps was back then. I've only seen videos and heard audio recordings of their finals performances for both nights. Having seen/heard both through recordings, I much prefer 1989. I felt the music had much better arrangement and was much more effective in delivery. Someone had mentioned earlier that the reason a lot of people choose 1989 over 1988 is probably because 1989 is the championship year of the two. In my case, I prefer it moreso because of how I connect with the music. It feels much more emotive to me, and the even the writing is more enjoyable for me. I had chosen this as my favorite all time show far before I found out others held it in high regard. In any case, SCVs 1989 finals performance is an example of why time machines need to be invented. No matter how good of an audio system I can build, I'll never be able to hear them perform it live like they did that night. The closest I can get to it is watching their encore performances at local shows where their brass often plays a section of it. <3 SCV
  8. I predict a first place championships win in 2009. =)
  9. Sorry you feel this way George. I didn't feel it was as bad as you make it out to be, but to each their own. Hopefully your next experience in California will be great, should you decide to come out again.
  10. Why hasn't the original poster responded? (...unless he has and I somehow missed it)
  11. I heard considerably more applause and congratulatory remarks than negative comments made at the shows I attended, including at finals. There were also many congratulatory threads posted in this forum. Perhaps you should focus on the positive and not let yourself be drawn into the negative?
  12. Visit DCI's contact page. You can either write to them via postal mail, or submit this in their web based form. Good luck. I'd like to read their response to you when it comes in. =)
  13. Submit this question to DCI and wait for a response. If one doesn't return within a reasonable amount of time, resubmit the question until you get a response.
  14. The encore performance of their show on finals night was HOT! They stopped caring about score and played out to the audience... LOUD! That was also the coolest Bb warmups I had ever seen. MAN, that was freakin' awesome!
