  1. Out of who's world? No offense to the hard working kids in BD, but your 2010 offering (I've seen it three times) is really not that demanding. And I am using BD's 1993 and 2002 shows as benchmarks.
  2. Yes - 1980 was a GREAT year for all finalist corps!! Most all of them played stuff you would remember for years!! Guardsmen - Duck whistles in the drum solo North Star - El Gato Triste Crossmen - Superman Cavies - Softly... Garfield - Elks Parade (and Al Chez!!) SCV - "Stone Ground Seven" - possibly one of the greatest drum solos of all time; and "Evita." Madison Scouts - Malaguena and Ice Castles Phantom - Polivestian Dances Spirit - "Georgia" (and arguably the LOUDEST hornline ever!!) Bridgemen - "In the Stone" 27th - "Open Wide' -- and as always, "Danny Boy." Devils - "Dindi"
  3. At the risk of some "grenades" being thrown my way -- the only reason Garfield Cadets drum line popped a perfect 20 in 87 was because field perc judge was not in shape, and spent the final 5 mins of their show parked on the front sideline for the most part. I've listened to the audio several times over the past two decades. Too much dirt from the battery in spots to be "perfect." Just sayin...
  4. Take away the mirrors, and Bluecoats would be ahead of BD. Pardon my "negativity," but I think the GE judges are too enamored by them and are inflating effect scores as such.
  5. Results from tonight and tomorrow will be interesting as we head into the August "final stretch!!"
  6. Today's judges are not afforded the opportunity to do anything but "slot" for the most part. The demand subcaptions were stripped off of the DCI sheets 12 years ago; electronics/amplification has skewed musical presentations... etc etc. Take some time and look at historical scores from 15 to 20 years ago compared to now. I can remember prelim/finals shows (DCI East; DCI Midwest, etc) where one corps may place first in prelims, and ended up 3rd or 4th in finals. That would never happen today. Also have seen historical scores where one corps won a show one night, and the next night with the same line-up, that corps was 2nd or 3rd. That never happens today 90% of the time. While I DO NOT advocate reverting back to judging sheets/criteria based on 10 to 15 years ago, I DO advocate a thorough review of how today's judging community evaluates a show and how they are trained. We've gotten to the point where if "Corps A" (no names please) is scoring in the low to mid 90's on July 28/29th, there's no way they will be scored below a 90 the rest of the season -- even if their performance level merits an 89.9!!!
  7. Kind of sad that these kinds of crowds don't show up for DCI finals anymore. I only go back to the late 70's through late 80's. but average crowds used to hover between 32,000 to 40,000 people through about 1990.
  8. C'Mon Jonathan!! Get on board!! GO BLLOOOOO!!! My humble observation -- Bluecoats can stay ahead of Cavies and Cadets. Crown... not so sure. Also, all of these corps need to be watching in their rearview mirror for... PHANTOM REGIMENT!!
  9. Unfortunately I have to miss this year's Massillon show for the first time in 11 years. (Good thing Bluecoats hosted another show July 9th!!) That being said -- this show is worth the drive, and Blue92 is right. You won't believe this is a high school facility!!
  10. And 3 years ago -- when I used to post more regularly -- people (at least 50% of them) thought I was a little weird asking that a "demand" caption be re-instated as a subcaption on the perf brass, ens music, visual performance, and perf percussion sheets. If that were the case, the top 7 corps the past 4 yrs would look MUCH different, as would the corps who won the title!! Let the fun begin and replies to this posting!!
  11. North Star, Rockland Defenders, Avant Garde, Valley Fever..... We could go on and on and on......
  12. 82 27th drum line could roll out of a dead sleep and play a #### clean show!!!
  13. Jason -- probably the most accurate observation and analysis in many years! Kudos!!
  14. OK -- I might be dating myself here: 1982 27th Lancers 1982 Bridgemen 1975 Madison Scouts 1973 Anaheim Kingsmen 1993 Blue Devils 1995 Bluecoats 2010 Bluecoats
  15. Both Canton and Concord have established themselves this season as the top contenders going down the stretch. The little "additions" each corps has made to their programs as the season has progressed not only is being rewarded by the judging community, but also is outright spot on to "sell" their respective shows. Also -- and I will go out on a limb here -- I think Regiment makes a push the last 2 to 3 weeks of the season, and I would not be surprised if they "sneak" past some others into the top 5.
  16. And the sky may remain two shades of blue all the way through finals week!!
  17. I recall either in the early or mid 1980's, Phantom did an "impromptu" standstill concert at a large truckstop in the midwest while their equipment tractor/trailer was being repaired.
  18. Not sure how far back you go in the activity, but there have been years where a corps overall placed 4th or lower and won the high drum trophy (Bridgemen, Blue Devils, Santa Clara, etc come to mind.)
