  1. Yes! First Colts audio I've heard of the season! Awwww yea, work it trumpets. RED TEEEEAM!
  2. I have this fun thing that I do. I completely throw credibility out the window when people frequently misspell words or write with poor grammar. Is that fair? It might not be. However, I get a lot more value out of discussion in threads littered with virtually unreadable posts.
  3. The Cavaliers, in my opinion, have epitomized optimum brass playing in the last decade. They are always in tone and in tune. They employ an ensemble listening approach that is simple, effective, and all but guarantees a well-balanced brass sound. And I second whoever said "siiiiick" to the 2003 jam session with the mellos flyin' high! Agreed. Top 5 personal favorite drum corps moment.
  4. Keeping in mind that my show ending experiences are limited to the last four years when live, and then purchased DVDs (I own very few). 03 Cavaliers - This may be the most clever ending to a show I've seen. 07 Crown - Love it. 08 Phantom - Duh. Also, I LOVE the way the Cadets end a show. Marching and playing. Marching AND playing! Company fronts that pinwheel sequentially into another company front. Compression onto the 50 yard line followed by several sets of mind-blowing, frenetic, symmetrical drill (1999 comes to mind). Exciting build supported by very intelligently written harmonic progressions and increasingly nervous visuals. Often times, one more WOW moment, followed by an ending form that gives a sense of familiarity (what is the significance of that 'X'?). Goosebumps every time.
  5. Marched 06-07 with Colts. I have a degree in Music Ed. I drove from Fargo, ND to Dubuque, IA. Depending on the weather it was at most a 9 hour drive.
  6. I will reinforce earlier comments in light of the new hire. I have always been absolutely convinced that Greg Orwoll never makes a single decision without completely considering the well-being of marching members. I trust his decision and, therefore, Mr. Nelson.
  7. The scant funding that high school band programs typically receive is well worth it. Your assertion that there is little or no value drawn from the band experience seems off. Also, a band program's measure of success should not be based on how it sounds. My high school band did not perform very well at concerts or on the field. Value is found in other more important aspects of the experience. Just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it's not there.
  8. Music education doesn't exist to train musicians. However, it is a welcome byproduct. A musical experience in school is necessary to create better people. Without the musical aesthetic, or something similar to it, students miss out on an outlet for social and emotional development. I am ashamed by your comments.
  9. Not to get off topic, but because Colts are going oceanic in theme, what exactly could they do with water on the field? I forget what exactly the new rule allows. Anybody?
  10. I saw Colts in Stillwater and Mankato. Haven't stopped whistling "An Unexpected Song" since. Simply beautiful. They get my vote.
