  1. My understanding is that several of the battery are new and only started learning drill last week. They marched the parts they knew of e show. If you noticed, a horn player did the same thin, same reason.
  2. Sometimes when the DCI judges do the first tabulation, they forget our "extra" caption and give a lower score. When they recall or get informed about it, one of the captions gets averaged in twice, although I don't recall which. Note: this is what I observed my 2 years on staff.... It may have changed.
  3. This is a short-sighted statement. Everyone has to have liability insurance. If an insurer finds out underage membership were drinking, you can say goodbye to your rider and potentially to any future affordable rider. No responsible organization has anything other than a zero-tolerance policy for their underage members. It is the law, and all organizations should abide by them. This is "lose your charter and cease to exist" territory, and no one should be against keeping those for whom it is illegal to consume a substance *or* any member for whom it *is* legal to consume a substance to give that substance to a person for whom it is illegal to consume. If you have a policy, it has to have teeth. If someone is consuming against the law while under your care or auspices (on tour, for instance) you are now responsible for whatever happens. It is the only right thing to do to have a zero-tolerance policy in regards to your under-agers.
  4. Err... Some of us have competed on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. One year: Parade Fri, Show Sat. Show Sun. Show Tues. It does happen and with a well-led, prepared management you can do anything.
  5. I do not know a single DCA corps that does not have a lion's share of Jr. members, ageouts, and pre-members. That statement, in my 9 years' DCA experience, is not true.
  6. Bump! Tomorrow is the final day to get your applications in for consideration. Don't let this opportunity slip by!

  15. I think this whole idea is a non-starter. Our school systems are furloughing teachers as it is because they just can't afford to have them on the job as many days as they are now. And they think more days will happen/help? I don't think we'll see this happen.
  16. No such rule. Many DCA corps fill holes at season's end with kids fresh from DCI tour.
  17. Add to this the earlier "you don't know the situation" post from a couple pages back. Take me for instance... My mom and dad split the year I was set to head out for Concord. Suddenly, I'm a breadwinner in the house, and remain so until my 3rd year of college...past my ageout. I've now got 7 seasons of DCA under my belt, two as an instructor. In my personal case, my wife is in a nursing home, my boys are on the verge of college, and I'm going back to finish my degree. I'll have summers and weekends and an income to support my habit. Were I to hear that DCI had opened up the age limits, I'd immediately enter a physical training program, and fully prepare myself mentally, physically, and musically for a season. One season. One and only one season (in my case). I never had the chance to do it, and would jump at the chance to march a true, touring DCI season. I also recognize my age and my own limitations. Once that season is done, I'd have done the one thing I'd never had a chance to do in the activity. While in it's current incarnation, DCI is no place for that, I could imagine that if you have someone of any age come in, can hack it musically and physically and has a good attitude and recognizes their "place" in the organization, there's no reason why should have one crack at it. Maybe even something of a limit such as "If you wish to participate after the age of X, you can only participate one year at a time with a two-season interim of ineligibility." First, it would force two years of having to "pay the bills" in-between seasons, making a return much harder than continuing to halt your life for the sake of Drum Corps. Second, those who are in a DMA, PhD, or some extended program requiring them to remain unencumbered until later in life, say... 25, 26, etc... they'd still have the opportunity to march. Those who never had the chance, if they pass entrance, would have the chance to march. Those who learned of DCI after their age-out (it happens) could march also. As for 501©3 regulations, that's a snap. A simple amendment to bylaws, ratification of a Board of Directors, and a re-file with the secretary of state is about all you need. Mere paperwork. Along the lines of an earlier post, what about a "pro" league? Many are concerned with cannibalizing smaller/regional organizations, but I think an imposed requirement of membership in the "minors" for at least two seasons could really revitalize that portion of the activity, were a "pro" league to exist. Thoughts?
  18. You're the absolute last person I would've expected to make this ridiculous argument. Many, if not all, all-age corps now have people as young as even 13 years old. Many of us find ourselves training kids who then go march juniors and then come back to us after age-out to continue marching. If what you are saying were true, rape and sexual assault would be rampant throughout all of the all-age activity. ESPECIALLy when membership is left much more to their own and not herded from site to site with hardly any downtime at all. This is and always has been a fallacious argument and does a disservice to all of the activity.
  19. There were 3 OC corps at the Music City Metal show last year. Correction: 5 corps. Derby City Knights Memphis Sound Oregon Crusaders Revolution Velvet Knights Sorry... I was on the field. Had to go look this one up.
  20. Ummm... we spend about 30-40k/year on transportation. Assume 10-12k/show, and this year it was Bridgeport, Lewisburg, Rochester. That's a *normal* season. If you budget it in at the beginning of the year, you can travel anywhere. Regardless of who you are, or what region you are in or even what your normal budget looks like. All it takes is the desire to make it happen.
  21. I hear ya, BOS, but before you were around on these here forums, there was much grousing about regarding whether they were a Southern or a Northern corps. That northern designation was preferred by their director at the time. I mean, after all... if Shenandoah comes down all the time and considers themselves a Southern Corps up in Virginia, from a geographical perspective, I'd think you're right. However, if they consider themselves a northern corps and only compete in the northern shows, there's not a lot else that can be said. My favorite times in this activity have been in the dogfights between Gold & CV in '04/'05 and now with Alliance in the current years. More competition and more corps in the region == a win for everyone.
