  1. Hey I am open minded and love the out of the box ideas however you might consider getting some protection. This is DCP LOL
  2. Thanks.....................I need all the help I can get
  3. Excellent suggestion. Not sure I can modify the poll now?
  4. What is DCI’s biggest problem? (Relative to future growth) You may select more than one Much of what is posted on DCP relates to some type of “problem” with today’s Drum Corps activity. I actually think it is really more about someone’s personnel taste. There likes and dislikes. As humorous as this is (the personnel taste thing) the stability and growth of the activity are important concerns. I am asking the question “What is DCI’s biggest problem? Relative to the future health of the activity. I am not asking “What changes would allow YOU to enjoy Drum Corps more” So please try and put you personal taste aside for one minute. Just because you may enjoy it more does not necessarily mean the activity will grow and prosper. If you just answer “General program content and artistic direction” or "all the new school stuff" (Synth, Vocals, Etc). without explaining how this will grow the activity it will be obvious your answer just reflects your “personal” want VS. what’s important for the activity My top 3 are, DCI Leadership, Judging criteria and Competitive balance (Increased parody).
  5. How does the SCV drill compare to to the last drill you wrote?
  6. Thank you...... My mother in 1972 designed (w/Gail) and made all 115 SCV uniforms. She would appreciate your comments. On the other she would also love the current SCV look. Mike Shiffer Santa Clara Vanguard 1970 - 1973
  7. Your brought this to the wrong place. Bands are cool. I did it, had some good times, etc. A band is a band and drum corps is drum corps. They are different. They each have there place. Its not our fault that drum corps is far far superior and band folks dont get it. When you hear the bashing its because many on herein fact most in the activity no the difference between DC and a band and we wanht to make sure drum corps is protected. That it never turns in to a cute little marching band thing. Maybe you never did drum corps and if so, thats why you dont get it. Your brought this to the wrong place.
  8. I for one do not find the program to create enough emotion and enough feeling. It does not move me like so many past SCV programs have. My opinion alone just reflects my taste and what I look to get from a piece of music. It does not make the program good or bad. I do think the poll results so far are very telling and should be valuable data for SCV. 45% of respondents’ DO NOT like the material/program. 45% is a Very large number. SCV may not have won it all in several years but their programs, style and approach have generally been loved my most fans. You generally don’t see allot of negative stuff regarding SCV. It would also seem the program is not doing well in the eyes of the judgers. Again 45% not liking the program is a very big deal when we are talking about SCV. IF (and it’s a big if) SCV wants to be “more” competitive they may have to search deeper to find material that both supports their musical direction, tradition and style AND plays well with the Drum Corps medium. Like I said, “If” they want to be more competitive. It is clearly theirs decision and theirs alone to make. If there commitment is to exploring programs that perhaps are “risky” and perhaps DCI or the average fan or the judges might not relate to, it is their choice and I applaud them for their musical commitment. They should just not be surprised by the competitive results. I do think Jeff and the design team can actually accomplish both (SCV musical tradition/direction and improved competitive results). The great thing about future programs is that the available material to select from is endless. And there are countless works that have yet to be presented as only drum corps can. I also think SCV should be concerned about how this year’s program affects future recruiting. Again this could just be do to my own personal taste, but my gut tells me this program will not have new kids running in droves to SCV additions.
  9. OK Cavies (I would love it) Just tell us how they make up the 2 points. Think like the Cavies staff, they must have a plan. IE .5 in brass cannge x and get . 6 in GE etc.
  10. August 14, Indianapolis In first place with a score of 98.965, from Concord, California, The Blue Devils. We are 19 days away from finals. 19 days away from naming the 2010 DCI Champion. I am sorry to announce the results so soon however, I can no longer ignore the obvious. BD’s are points ahead of the other top 5 and are winning all captions. Like there show or not, this year’s show will not get stale or peak too early. For whatever reason, the judging community loves what they are doing and how they are doing it. And the 2010 Blue Machine may be the best all around group the have ever put on the field No one will catch them and it’s even doubtful they will get much closer. Perhaps you disagree (I hope) If so please tell us which Corps will catch them and more importantly how they will catch them. Be specific. IE they will make up .6 in drums, .3 in brass etc, etc. Please dont use examples from previous years (Crops X was Y behind and caught Corps Z Bla Bla Bal) Yes I know it has happened. We are only talking about 2010 here. Have fun SCV Homer
  11. Once again SCV can compete with ANYONE on staff pay. Yes you need a top level staff but this is drump corps IF there is a difference between what BD's Cadets and SCV pay their staff. it is penies. This is drum corps where the pay equally sucks. Cadtes staff payy is not why BD's are beeting them by 2 points. George will pay whatever he has too.
  12. Yes I did but it was 1973 and we kicked their butts SCV Homer
  13. EVERYONE on DCP needs to see the truth in your statement...well said! I always chuckle at an individual (like me) who sees a show and says corps A was clearly better than corps B and deserved to win. Unless I can be in 8 places at the same time and educated in multiple disciplines, how can I draw that conclusion and really believe it?
  14. Two points on July 26 is not that significant. Can I have some of your meds?
  15. Your statement is true when we compare number 1 to say number 12 or 15 or 20. You do need to have a reasonable level of financial capability to be in the top 6 or 7 however, more money alone would not change the placement of 2-7. For example, SCV’s financial income and overall position is equal to or better than BD’s. SCV maybe the most financially sound corps in all of Bingo. There competitive results have NOTHING to do with money. When Phantom won it all a few years back I can assure you they we far from being financially sound. Several Corps were in a significantly better financial position. I am not saying that money does not create opportunity and capability however, there are countless examples of were money, not well managed or executed does not produce results. Yes the Yankees won it all last year but there have been many years where the highest paid team in all of baseball finished out of the money. Yes BD’s have enough financial support to perhaps worry less about it. But all drum corps (including BD’s) financially struggle, period. For whatever reason, Mr.Gibbs has produced a culture, a system, an attitude, a commitment etc. that is, (as competitive drum corps goes) the best in the business. Hell I don’t even like BD’s but I can recognize superior management when I see it. His management and system works better. I can assure you if you replaced Mr. Gibbs with Mr. X, in a few years you would see different competitive results. When Gail was no longer running SCV, things changed. Although their financial position was as good if not better, the organization changed and so did their results. Yes more money is good but NEVER discount leadership
  16. This post is not intended to be a BD Love/Hate thing. Come on people, try and be objective. It’s July 26 and the Devils are beating the field by roughly 2 points. This is a significant margin. From this consistent spread we can conclude one of the following A) We are seeing something very special and the Devils program, performance and cleanliness justifies these results B) The other top four corps are good but each have an area(s) that does not allow them to achieve completive (vs. BD) results C) The subjective nature of judging, the judging criteria and or the quality of judging is way out of wack Please respond with Yes they are that much “better” or no they or not. Response Rules Please only respond if you have seen BD’d “Live”. If you have only seen BD’s on fan network please do not respond. Any opinion derived from FN is clearly compromised. If you are a BD homer, please attempt to be objective If you are a BD hatter, please attempt to be objective
  17. 1) I agree the people that saw drum corps before 1970 is probably a small number of respondents 2) The creative/artistic growth started to increase in about 1970 and just continued to catch fire in the 80’s, 90’s and continues today 3) So far the poll results are about what I expected. I do think the numbers for 2006 – 2010 would be higher if we were not in season and current members were voting
  18. I agree with your comments however doesnt that refer to inovation. A leeter time periond could have evolved the method and been more artistic? Just a question
  19. The poll question was "Artsistic" Keep it simple, dont over think it
  20. You may be correct however people still have opinions and that’s what this poll is about.
