  1. The Pearl CarbonPly and CarbonCore drums did not employ carbon fiber for the purpose of making them lighter weight. All Pearl Championship snares (FFX, CarbonPly, and CarbonCore) are 6 ply. The FFX and CarbonCore are maple and the CarbonPly is African Mahogany, and the addition of carbon fiber actually makes the drums louder. The carbon fiber doesn't actually replace any shell material, it is added to it.
  2. Pardon me. Mike Jackson was "Caption Supervisor" this past year. Which is obviously way different.
  3. No, Tom Rarick has been writing the pit book at Bluecoats since 2004 or 2005, and took over the battery writing in 2009 when Mike McIntosh left. Mike Jackson had been the caption head.
  4. I'm excited to hear Mike's writing in DCI again.
  5. This is AWESOME news, if true. As for Spirit, I hope the percussion staff stays, they have been great the last few years.
  6. Why does the theme/concept/atmosphere of their show have to have a point/story/plot? Can't it just be a theme/concept/atmosphere? Isn't it possible that they were just trying to create a general aesthetic, not tell a story? Most shows, in fact, DON'T have a clear story line. Why does this one have to have one? I find it ironic that the majority of people who dislike the show, do so on the basis that "I shouldn't have to be educated on a show to enjoy it" or "I shouldn't have to have a show explained to me in order to like it." I agree! YOU'RE the one who keeps insisting that there's something to be educated about or explained! If you wish that drum corps was like it used to be, back when you didn't need cliff notes and Wikipedia and a music degree to enjoy a show, boy this show should be right up your alley! Just like the original Einstein on the Beach opera, there's no complex plot to follow, no story line, and any greater meaning gets to be determined by YOU: the observer! It's just a general atmosphere and aesthetic being created that allows for some pretty cool music to happen.
  7. Good call. I loved his writing at SCV when he was there in 2006-2007.
  8. I'm not telling anyone they have to like or dislike anything. I'm just encouraging people to try and view DCI through a different lens than they used to. One thing we can all agree on: the activity has changed. If you try to view it through a 1970's, 1980's, or 1990's lens, of course you'll hate it. I figure this would all be more enjoyable if we all try to like DCI as it is rather than hate it. It changed, why shouldn't we?
  9. Consider this - Maybe it isn't supposed to "make sense" in the way we want it to. Maybe that was part of what Glass was trying to achieve: Einstein was brilliant and things that don't make sense to most people made sense to him. Even if he was just chilling "on the beach," his head was still probably racing the whole time. I don't understand the theory of relativity. All those numbers flying by, it seems like a nonsensical story to me! (getting the references yet?) One thing I DO understand is what it is like to sit with a pretty girl. And like Einstein said, "When a man sits with a pretty girl for an hour, itseems like a minute. But let him sit on a hot stove for a minute -- then it'slonger than any hour. That's relativity!" THAT is something we can all relate to!
  10. Yes, it is in the original source music EotB, but before that it was a poem called Lovers on a Park Bench, by Samuel M. Johnson. It is also a reference to Einstein's famous quote "When a man sits with a pretty girl for an hour, it seems like a minute. But let him sit on a hot stove for a minute -- then it's longer than any hour. That's relativity!" I think it is brilliant, beautiful, and effective. Y'all need to stop complaining, get your head out of the "drum corps box" and start looking at this medium as more than just good band like it used to be. It has become much, much more and its own people are fighting that.
  11. People, I think we can all recognize that making opinions on Crown's battery based on that video is a little unfair. One rep from almost a month ago taken out of context does not have any bearing on how they are now. In terms of their book, I think the battery book is EXTREMELY difficult in ways that lots of people don't understand. The hand speed changes, the rhythmic phrasing, and the space all contribute to how deceivingly hard that book is. Are they achieving it yet? No. But the front ensemble is great again, and if the judges are able to see what I see in the battery book, expect their numbers to jump as they start to execute it better.
  12. It sure is hard to beat a good pair of Hardimons. Emphasis on good pair.
  13. Even after all this time, they are still hung up on Boof.
  14. I think the Bluecoats have the best sounding drums this year. Snares are wet and short, quads are resonant and in the pitch range that I like, and basses are warm but punchy. Honorable mention goes to the Cadets, but the last video of theirs that I watched, the snares sounded much drier. Other good sounding tuning schemes I've heard are from Madison and Blue Stars. The Blue Devils' snares sound pretty good this year, though a bit higher than I like, but the quads are just dead. SCV's snares sound great, but the basses and quads are a little bit lower pitched than I prefer. Phantom went with indoor cut quads this year for some ungodly reason, and they don't pack the warmth that the full size shells do, but the basses and snares sound good. The video of the Cavaliers that I watched, the snares had a thick sound, and the quads are a little reefed for my taste, but still sound good. Those bass drums sound fantastic though. Crown's snare sound is thick, and the quads generally don't sound like they are in tune with one another in the videos I have seen. Haven't heard much else.
  15. AMEN!!!!! How many prospective male members want to joins a group and end up lookign like a bunch of NANCYBOYS prancing around with eachother wearing a tutu??? This is almost as bad as when Dev's got rid of the frilly shirts!!!
  16. I hung out at one of SCV's east coast rehearsals this year, and let me tell you: those new snares are LOUD. The way that staff had them tuned, and the way those guys played them, even the low dynamics cut right through everything.
  17. This is just silly. The quads and snares can sound great when tuned well, just like every single other brand of drums out there. The front ensemble equipment was not up to par at first, but Majestic has really been stepping up their concert percussion game lately, so I expect the outdoor stuff to follow suit.
  18. Dennis DeLucia cries on his Effect tapes for WGI all the time. But he's a huge wuss, so.
