  1. Hello, Does anyone have any contact info for Dan Lutz. He arranged for ECJ and also the NY skyliners in the early 90's. Thanks for any help.
  2. My condolences to the Richardson family. Konga was a great man, one of the best memories of my years in Skys drumline. Kenny Frank NY Skyliners 90-91
  3. If you look on the endorser page many of the world class drummers listed use Factory Metal AND are endorsed by other cymbal companies.. I dont believe there would be sponsorship issues. http://www.factorymetalpercussion.com/artistendorsement.htm
  4. DRUM! Magazine is sold on most newsstands in the music mag section. Mike D from the Beastie Boys is on the cover. It's the September 2007 issue.
  5. I received the news today from John Oddo and I am shocked and saddened. I only marched with Sean 2 years but he was a great guy , always friendly and funny. Rest in Peace Sean. God bless you and your family. Kenny Frank NY Skyliners 1990-1991
  6. Scott Johnson's coming out to Long Island next weekend. I'll try and pry it out of him!
  7. Here is your answer from the article "Whenever asked, Sly has always stated that he had no plans to retire until the corps’ visual caption was ready. The Cavaliers plan to promote a member from their current visual staff to the position of caption head. "
  8. I dont know for sure. I would guess they were Remo Powerstroke 77's
  9. Paul Rennick took over at the later part of the season after Fred Sanford had left. I dont think he wrote much of that book. I think he did some rewrites.
  10. Crossmen were out of Finals from 1985-1988(4 years) making it back in 1989.
  11. I dont know what will happen with the Cavaliers and Jim Casella but two other similiar situations currently: Colin McNutt and Madison- He endores Pearl they are a long time Yamaha corps. This is his third year there. Paul Rennick and Phantom: Paul just became a Dynasty endorser thru his UNT teaching gig. and Phantom is still w/ Pearl Drums. Who knows where this will lead.
  12. OK , First off I am a drummer so bear with me here. :P These are just a few thoughts over what I saw in Allentown last night. Raiders: Got into the stadium to late to see them, sorry. I have to applaud them though for putting together a competitive division 3 program that kids can do on weekends and is affordable. Magic: Very young corps. They seemed to struggle a bit with the show. Its a good package for them though. the music is familiar which helps. Lots of repetition and cleaning and they should be able to get it together. The drum line seemed very large in ratio to the Hornline 10S 5Q 5B. This seemed to affect balance issues w/ the brass. Basics need to be reinforced drumline! Attacks and releases! Southwind:The concept of the show was Duality. this was well represtented in the opposite style light and dark uniforms of the hornline and the different musical stylings. This year and last year with Southwind it feels like the shows have to much music. Seven different pieces all crammed into a show. You barely hear one piece develop then bam! off to the next one. Crown: I was not familiar with the music. The show was put together and performed very well. This is about all I can say about it. Boston Crusaders: They seem to have taken a different direction in show design this year than in years past. Again, like Crown its a well performed show but it just leaves you feeling "ehh" I understand that the large props around the field come together at the end of the show to make the cathederal windows it was a nice effect but for most of the show theyare staged in pieces around the field. Some of my friends and people around me thought they looked like bottle openers! The drum line seems to be improving year to year. I liked them during their features, just need some cleaning guys. Phantom Regiment: One of my favorite corps. If you were expecting a show similiar to last years this isnt it. Its a dark classical show with often violent themes. That being said they were much better live then what I hadheard on the two APD's from earlier in the season. The percussion is so good its unreal. I can't believe how clean they are this early in the season. I can see why they have been beating the Cadets line by almost a point. The all low and mid brass effect in the Ave Maria is very nice and just long enough not to be overused.I spoke to a former student who is marching mellophone after the show. She told me the show is far from done. Changes both musically and visually are forthcoming starting with the closer. So it will be interesting to see what this shows final version will be. They need more GE.Thisis where they have been losing to Cadets while they are taking music captions. The Cadets:The big controversy! Let me start off by saying that having finally seen this show. I did not hate it or love it. I am not quite sure how I feel about it. a few things that did come to mind: So much GE and visual effects, the music execution is suffering. The opening sequence "history repeating" It seems disjointed from the rest of the show. The ballad" Like others have said here. The vocals do not add anything to it. The hornline has a gorgeous sound here and the vocals just seem to get in the way. The uniform backs make no sense and did not add anything at least to me. The drum line is again excellent but the execution is suffering. I know with 10 snares 6 quads and 5 bass it takes a bit to clean but this is where they are losing to Phantom in percussion. Take it as you may,for better or worse. This show is different than aything ever done in Drum corps. Its more like Broadway revues or what some BOA shows have been. To me it was hard to find focus at times, like a 3 ring circus you dont know where to look sometimes. Opinions and mileage will vary on this show for sure. Crossmen: The most entertaining corps of the night. I had heard and read they were much improved from last year. This is the truth folks. It is only their second show out so its a work in progress and not as clean as some others but they are headed in a good direction. Wonderful to hear that Metheny groove from the Xmen again! Nice opener. The radio section is a gas it works well. As a friend of mine said "that was a perfect use of amplification" The ballad was gorgeous and the closer of ELP's Tank was different and worked very well. When Ifirst heard the pit sounds at the start it took a second to realize it was the car starting up! A wonderfully entertaining program and it deserved the standing O it got. With work the Crossmen will be back at the Saturday dance! OK now my biggest complaint of the evening: I thought it was unbelivably rude of that while the Crossmen were on the field that the Cadets felt the need to back up their prop truck just off then right end zone so they could begin loading. The backup signal could be heard during the Crossmen show. Also I cant be sure who it was but someones drum line was hacking away loudly outside the stadium during Crossmens performance. Xmen were the last corps on so no one was warming up. Was there a need to interupt another corps performance. Cmon guys common sense and courtesy to other groups! Thats all I have to say about that.
  13. [ *rant* Ok, what is it about Bluecoats doing the same song 2 years in a row? And it's not even something that everyone has done before, such as "Fanfare for the Common Man", or "Appalacian Spring" or something...but it's the opener from the 2003 Scouts show by Benoit Jutras (can't remember the exact name)....which, incidentally, I don't think had ever been done by anyone before. That would make the third time we've heard this song in 3 years by 2 different corps. Now, before anybody says anything, I know it was routine for this to happen, especially within any particular corps, back in the 70's and 80's. But we're not IN the 70's or 80's. C'mon guys...I was expecting to hear something NEW out of you...and certainly not something that the Scouts brought to the table for the first time just 2 years ago (from when they first did it last season). Pretty disappointed with that...and I'm sure that has something to do with the fact that I like the Scouts version of it better. I'm just really surprised...but oh well...if that's what they wanna do, then they certainly can...I just think it's a little overdone at this point. <**> Ok, I had so much more I wanted to say, I'm sure...but this is about all I could pull off the top of my head. It's been a long couple of days, and I need sleep. Thank you all for reading, and feel free to agree, disagree, or tell my that my mother dresses me funny to your hearts content! :D Bluecoats are not doing the same song 2 years in a row. They are both from Cirque du Soleil shows and both by Benoit Jutras. Last year the piece was Incantation and this year it is Distorted. They were both done by the 2003 Madison Scouts. Incantation was also used last year by Southwind.
  14. When I import them into iTunes it says they are WMA files and must be converted and does it for me. Do you have the latest iTunes?
  15. it was even cooler when Phantom Regiment did it in the 80's :)
  16. no one will win.... no one will be able to afford the gas to get to the stadium!
  17. Summertime is a mallet keyboard warmup ex. written by Jim Ancona who taught their pit at the time. He has taught Crossmen,SCV and is now at Cavies. The music is in his and Jim Casselas book UPFRONT for front ensemble.
  18. If you go to the web store at the Canadian Brass website you can get Brass Theatre 1. I can't remember where I got Brass Theatre 3 which they did w/ The Canterbury Brass. you might check the Star of Indiana website.
  19. Angel, You can do it! you kept the quads in line in 90-91 when I marched with you. Besides, Tenors are more fun and challenging to play anyway! Kenny Frank NY Skyliners Quad 1990-1991
  20. I dont know if others have said it before, but the clip has a quality similar to a lot of Cirque du Soleil material. Its new its different. As an interesting aside about 10 years ago I worked with a school marching band that used vocalists, singling lyrics with the band. George Hopkins was at one of our practices, At that time he wasn't sure how to improve or fix the product or the issues it had. I guess he found a way.
  21. According to the email the clip will be made public on Wednesday on the YEA site. Having heard it I think it is tasteful .It reminded me of a Cirque du Solei style ballad vocal. I still don't feel totally comfortable with the vocals but this example was tasteful and musical.
  22. Jeff, your thinking of Goodfellas w/ Pesci this is the Godfather w/ Brando.
  23. I am asking this from a musical perspective. Which 2005 shows, either thru multiple viewings or APD listening is your favorite? My perspective: Phantom Regiment To me this is a wonderful production. It has it all. I can listen over and over and not get tired of it. I love Paul Rennicks percussion scoring. Also on my list: Madison Santa Clara Bluecoats Glassmen
