  1. Yes they did. They're going to be doing it next week too! Im not in the band anymore but i saw some of the drill theyre using for next weeks game from some friends.
  2. Just wanted to make sure Lincoln's post actually gets noticed as it does give some pretty interesting insight and an opposing view to most of the opinions on the topic of releasing tapes.
  3. In case this crossed anyone's mind, I'm absolutely not blaming the players for the sound. I know that the quality of the instruments aren't the best. Heck, the early 2000's hornlines sounded rough too when they made the switch from g bugles. Now we have corps like crown, BD, and the Cadets playing with incredible intonation and quality with improved horns. And yes, phantom regiment in general has some really good low brass lines. From the 2000-2008, which PR show do you think had the best low brass sound?
  4. Well he did say SEE tape. Are you sure there wasn't anything written ON the tape itself?
  5. It's just very rough sounding and raw... It doesn't sound like a normal brass ensemble to me haha. It's displeasing to the ear. It sounds like they're putting volume over everything else. I'm more of the opinion that intonation >>> than volume. I also don't like the lack of a coherent theme in the shows.
  6. If your parallel is correct, why are their tapes out online?
  7. That video is exactly what prompted me to create this topic
  8. Don't caption scores suggest what a corps needs to work on? I'm not sure why a judge tape would make much of a difference.
  9. Is there a reason why judge tapes are not released? There are some released online (mostly cadets tapes) but they're rare. I'd seriously be willing to pay a little extra a year on fan network to get access to them. Especially would love to hear the tape for BD this year.
  10. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a combination of everything mentioned. Personally that hit in their ballad annoyed me a ton. Let the phrase for somewhere be completed before skipping on into somewhere over the rainbow!!! I was left itching for more of "Somewhere" by the end.
  11. I've tried listening to shows on Fan Network from the 70's and early 80's and I've found that I can't really enjoy listening to anything before 1984 to be honest. The low brass in PR 78 did sound really good though!
  12. Slightly off topic but I'm sure it'll come up again in this thread so I might as well embrace it... which corps has been the biggest offender of synth use as a supplement to contras? My vote goes to the Cadets. Specifically 2010. That closer, Jesus... Can't hear anything but the constant bass.
  13. Are there many venues that are large (high) enough to be able to appreciate such a spectacle?
  14. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MlLQviJsYs&feature=youtu.be Well, I think the Bluecoats have been racking up some votes in the "post-synth" category.
  15. Of all the Cadets shows, I don't think I've seen that one before. I'll be sure to check it out!
  16. Phantom 2010: Probably some of the most beautiful music ever played on the football field slightly hampered by intonation issues. One of my favorite shows overall though! The resolution in the closer was amazing.
  17. 1. That was really impressive considering it's difficult to see the yard lines. 2. It was really refreshing to be able to actually hear woodwinds in a college marching band. Those piccolos have some power.
  18. Not sure where I was trying to suppress any facts. I'm not oblivious to the fact that there is synth use in DCI. Some corps make it pretty obvious they're using it. But my question was asking for the best low brass lines and that isn't exactly an invitation for "cheeky" responses such as "HAHAHA SYNTHS LOL." Whether corps use synths or not, their low brass lines are still playing. How about I rephrase this topic so that those who are having trouble with it can have an easier time: "Most Impressive Low Brass Lines Without Factoring in the Synthesizer."
  19. I think the reason for the lack of a presence by the BD low brass has much more to do with arranging than with the quality or teaching of the section. BD's books are always very soprano heavy (much to my distaste sometimes; I complained quite a bit about the shrill opening fanfare this year, but I digress).
  20. Some audience members are smarter than others? Not trying to sound elitist or anything like that. It's just that when presented with something symbolic in nature, you have to put in SOME brain power to figure out what's going on. It's like analyzing a book in English class. To catch the symbolism, you do have to think about it (and with a simple visual presentation from a DCI show, it's a lot easier to figure out than analysis of the color red in english class).
  21. At this point I ignore them and remain silently thankful for the people who did reply to this topic without having to mention a synth. Thanks for all the suggestions!
  22. Doesn't them getting a different program coordinator imply that they learned from their mistakes this season?
  23. Oops looks like someone already posted the link. Really interesting how Crown pulled off the show with such limited instrumentation.
  24. Haha I love the Cavies' style but I have no love for their brass arranging/sound. Oh yes I've checked out all the Cavies shows in which Gaines had a presence and the drill is phenomenal in all of the shows. He really understood how to logically move from one formation to the next and it actually made sense to what they were playing! Really? I know 2010 was a low year for Crown in terms of brass performance but I've yet to understand why. They sound great, atleast on the recording.
