  1. Of course we agree first that drum corps does sound better outdoors unless your electronix gizmos are hoping for that indoor off-the back-wall echo. Sure California might fall into the Pacific when the Big One hits, and the MLB All-Star game might just schedule another "concert" at UMN; plus there may come a day when Indy will have to replace the surface at LOS after learning from Santa Clara why that surface keeps popping up mid-play; and those buses to Bloomington might not just be quite right for the dinos and their sore knees. So DCP has to be prepared to set DCI in the right direction in the event for the event. Therefore, for possible future use: (first look within; 90% completed.) http://www.startribune.com/vikings-stadium-authority-and-its-general-contractor-close-to-settlement/368978151/ I'm sure some corps might just venture within to do the sound test, maybe while doing the UMN regionals as Phantom, Madison, and Cadets had done at the Metrodome in years past.
  2. On more than one public occasion, George Zingali admitted getting his inspiration for his drill from gazing upon the clouds of the skies and the birds that flew them. http://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/starlings-dance-over-winter-skies/9/
  3. It most certainly would, particularly at this difficult time. But I don't think he would be returning there.
  4. Cadets have a baritone spot open to be filled quickly before next horn camp. Contact John Molloy at Cadets office/YEA.
  5. Sometimes art imitates drum corps life, some times drum corps life imitate art. http://www.nhregister.com/arts-and-entertainment/20160212/100-years-later-everything-is-dada-at-yale-university-art-gallery Still awaiting many 2016 announcements.
  6. I still chuckle with memories of their exhibiton at Allentown the year they paid "tribute" to SCV from BITD by playing Bottle Dance, only to have the "dancers" come forward on their aluminum walkers. Effective, creative, and the crowd loved it. Ditto the time they paid tribute to 27th, complete with sitting George Bonfiglio (RIP) front and center.
  7. in drum corps or in high school marching band?
  8. According to George Lavelle's post on the DCA forum, the Bridgemen alumni will be doing the exhibition at Indy this summer. longer letter than given here. ... I'm happy to say we have over 70 horns and over 25 percussion and will be having our biggest corps since 2006. We will be doing 5 field shows this summer, highlighted with the final field performance in August at the DCI-Semi Finals in Indy. We will also be doing an exhibition at the Soundsport competition in Indy After August the organization will become a performing arts organization with many small ensembles like a Mini-Corps and maybe even a Soundsport. Types that you will need less people and less money. Hope this clears everything up as you will be able to see the Bridgemen many times before we ride off to the sunset. 9. Better check with George Dixon (DCP) poster before picking your uniform or guard equipment as Cadets' played this Holsinger in '93. The GD opinions of same are quite forthright. Ballad choice seems wonderfully apt for some sensitive musicianship with its low sustaining chords. Funny story about Birmingham (England and Alabama.) For a DCI show in Buffalo, there were several alums from England along to help the Cadets as food crew and roadies. During the break day a van load of volunteers headed to see Niagara Falls; but when they were going to see the Canadian side, there was a problem. In those years an American drivers license was sufficient proof of citizenship standing to drive to and from Canada. The Englishman had neither and had left the UK passport is safe keeping back with the corps. So the man from Birmingham, England did a wonderful Southern accent to convince the border guards of both countries that he was from Birmingham, Alabama (which the corpsmates knew enough of from previous shows and championships.) Great actor Martin was as he returned safely to the corps after his Buffalo snowjob. True story..
  10. not skipping Texas, Swamp Tour, and all those extreme heat/weather states all together? Hmm. I wonder why? I'm all for bringing back the Canadian/ien tour and Drums Across the Arctic.
  11. Could not the same complaint of rifles in '93 be made of 99% of the shows marched by all corps in DCI? Rifles in OOTW, Fellini, etc. stretching all the way back to the very first DCI in Whitewater? If there is to be a consistency of logic in show design, it must be consistent to all. That '92 & '93 rifle lines had some amazing individuals who continue to define the DCI and WGI activity; Keith Potter, Adam Sage, John Escalante, Andy Toth, Craig Biesecker are but a few of the names who spun those Cadet rifles in the early nineties.
  12. Given the "visual conceptions" and current business struggles of licensing, marketing, etc., will it really be that long before DCI and WGI merge officially?
  13. Although corps may no longer be publicly selling detailed recaps, I wouldn't be surprised that a black-market, (behind the souvie stand) version might subsidize some summer fuel funds. And then there is this version where corps will raise monies, similar to Powerball drawings and based on the DCP prediction threads. Blank recaps for each corps will be sold for which the buyers will fill in the various subcaptions with their best guestimatation. Akin to a 50/50, prizes will be awarded for 5, 6, 7 subcaptions correctly answered. The Powerball-like supernumber will probably be the Color Guard score, for God only knows how those subjective numbers are ever rendered. If no correct numbers are turned in, the monies will increase all the way to Finals. And John DeNovi, my copyright and licensing legal staff ("Little" Butchie and Ralph the Razor) have assured me that residuals will have to be paid if copied by others; they will collect. ha, ha.
  14. Ghost is right. Austin was being too cavalier.
  15. Well said, Tekk. The previous poster was probably hearkening back to what he wore in his youth of yore. :-p
  16. This is to what I was referring: Sam Olson Hello DCI, given this is a rules episode please allow me a suggestion. Give your fans a voice. I know given this is the 21st century, you want us to interact through Twitter, FB, Instagram etc. Drum Corps at its roots is about entertaining the crowd a...See More February 10 at 4:51pm · Edited Drum Corps International Hi Sam, thanks for taking the time to write us! Drum Corps International as an organization actually has very little to do with creating or changing the rules—it's actually the corps themselves (via their corps directors) who do all of that. So, the best way to get a rule changed or a new one created is actually by reaching out to your favorite corps.
  17. cf. the comments on the DCI fb page under the photo.
  18. I'm one of them except when it's linked to a corps page like DCI.org But penalty points, Garf!. Isn't it against DCP rules to cut and paste FB quotes w/o the original poster's permission? Tsk, Tsk. Basically what's said is that when the fan complained, DCI said it wasn't DCI's fault but that the corps make the rules. Complain to the corps not DCI. Besides Garf, I have enough time trying to figure out those word puzzles the security forces make one jump through before getting to the FB text. And it all has to be done in nano-seconds before the log-in box popd up and bounces me out. Have Jr. do it for you. He's probably quicker than you or I will ever be. :-)
  19. Those who think the fans are being dissed by DCI not releasing the recaps might wish to reference the response DCI gives to the poster of the DCI FB page today.
  20. Now will just have to be content buying instead of recaps those autographed life size photo glossies of Michael Boo; we use to get them for free in his early writing days before he became a celebrity. But that was BITD.
  21. Drum corps alums from Ohio (Garfield Cadets, Carolina Crown) surprised me by sharing the hard copy of a 2 page article of the 2/6/16 Fairfield Township (Butler edition) of the (Your Hometown) Enquirer about a new BAC bari for '16 from Hamilton, Ohio and who attends McAuley (all-girl) H.S. in Cincinnati. Great photo, half page picture of her with her horn and a wonderful explanation of the audition process and Crusaders' tour. Great publicity for the corps, for her Catholic h.s., and for drum corps. She'll have the chance to show off her corps in a hometown show at Hamilton, June 27th, Congrats Kate and have a great season. paper's email is hometown@enquirer.com
  22. When I mentioned Feb. camp, I meant the second Jan camp which was the last weekend going to the 31st. I was ahead of myself. On the other points, mostly concur. The ranks of "vet staff" & "alumni techs" has thinned a lot and has been spotty at the three winter camps thus far. Those still on staff are slated for Spring Training and after. The folks running the winter visuals are new from various of your rankings as I witnessed. Odd that you are correcting the drum major of the corps who has been at all camps, is part of the admin. discussion, and is GH's official corps mouth piece, otherwise he would not have ok'd her article before he posted it on the corps website.
  23. None of the above percussionist-comments have noted that the Jan. & Feb camps vids & music links show a smaller snare line than previously posted vids for this season; I am presuming that a few bodies were missing either due to concurrent CWP rehearsal the same weekend, snow/travels back to school, or the bug that has going about. Either way, all looks quite well for percussion contribution this season. As Kendall is neither a prattler nor a blabber, her comments here are quite telling about the visual direction and does not seem to belie the "usual-just a little different" presumptions of Tobias and some others have editorialized on this thread. With the strong music, it looks toward a most interesting and strong summer. "Taking all of this information into account, the leadership team is better equipped to take on the season with one, unified approach. This was particularly helpful in discussions with our new visual caption head, Bob Chreste. He hung out with us for a good portion of the weekend, and he was able to hear about what the norm was for us. Bob marched in The Cadets from 1996 through 1998, so he was able to refamiliarize himself with the ensemble and how we are accustomed to operating. Unlike most years, this year's approach to the visual program will be new to the vets and rookies alike. Regardless of how long we’ve all been marching with The Cadets or other corps, we are all brand-new to the staff, the staff is new to us, and the returning members are having to take a step back and learn a new process and program alongside the first-year members. Bob let us in on his approach to the visual program, and his underlying goal: to support the development of Cadets into great teachers." from: http://yea.org/programs/cadets/cadets/news/1179-cadets-leadership-weekend-2016
