  2. Nice picks of section leaders announced today (cf. site) while obvious GH has picked friends of the throne for the most part. Being able to communicate with him and from him is as much a part of the job as relations with MMs and having the off season time to do the tour prep duties (like winter work sessions between camps, etc.) Speaks well of the depths of vets returning...
  3. This thread topic has been appearing about once a month under slightly different titles. (Is it an advertisement for Indy hotels or DCI tickets???) Back flip through the pages of DCP threads since August 2015 for World Class corps and you will see no less than 3 separate threads with numerous suggestions, opinions, and reviews. General consensus is that Indy is a convention city, prices room with that aim, not as bad as some bigger cities. DCI has hotel links on its tickets' page. Start saving and check the threads. http://www.drumcorpsplanet.com/forums/index.php/topic/163388-accommodation-indy-2016/ https://aws.passkey.com/g/51428890 http://www.drumcorpsplanet.com/forums/index.php/topic/163040-hotel-crisis-in-indi-anyone-have-an-empty-floor/ http://www.indyhostel.us/ http://www.drumcorpsplanet.com/forums/index.php/topic/163023-dci-indy-hotel-hangout-after-each-show;-which-hotel/
  4. also pertinent comments of the OP's topic on Cadets 2016 thread.
  5. While the comment was ambivalent, color guard has never been his strong point. April Gilligan was designated heir-apparent by Peggy Twiggs who came with Marc Sylvester to Cadets as part of the later contract with George Zingali. He was hired not by Hopkins but by Doctor Richard Santo, previous director, who Hopkins succeeded. When Hopkins brought Michael Cesario on as show consultant, MC brought his younger brother Greg to do equipment design. (Jeff Cesario stayed home to do TV comedy routines on Tonight show and others.) It is Peggy Twiggs who instilled the greatness in the Cadets guard legacy and was rewarded with a "spin" named after her. While Katie Hopkins learned her guard work from April (and also during Miss Hopkins' time as a MM of The Colts) most of the guard folk since April have been what the horn players call FOK, friends of Katie. Results vary.
  6. Not much new in Cadet percussion phone in with Colin MacNutt and Iain Moyer; several questions about Steven's grip, getting flams to 250 bpm, and front ensemble stuff. http://yea.org/programs/cadets/cadets/news/1059-recap-percussion-talk-with-colin-and-iain Sounds like another great season for them. .... Guard talk had even less new info despite new caption head. Katie Hopkins will still be doing the movement, rifle line has to at least throw 7's, and various questions. [i don't expect any major changes here until they change the corps' director, but that's IMHO.] http://yea.org/programs/cadets/cadets/news/1058-recap-guard-talk-with-kristy
  7. Would Bob's chief competitor be "Ted" and would it have to be a top 6 corps?
  8. Reading this post, I discern a challenge: I still believe BK called their 2015 show "Because," uh, because they couldn't think of a theme to wrap around their program, and because "Here's a show with terrific music and mesmerizing drill, please enjoy it" was too long for Brandt Crocker to announce. While the show didn't have a theme, it did have cohesion. You don't always need the former to score well, but you do need the latter. BK showed this year that you don't need to give a cohesive program a name -- or at least a name that means anything. Imagine a show name that could be used by a corps for a program whose specifics match only what 2muchcoffeeman outlines above; the pithy name might be used by ANY DCI corps, and suitably printed on tour shirts, etc. (If they do choose one of our proposed names, maybe they will deduct several hundred dollars from some worthy MMs tour fees as a type of licensing agreement.) My entry: Drumcorpsia... (Pronounced "drum-core-ee-ah " like Gloria except in Concord where it will be said "drum-core-shja" like Fantasia.)
  9. Where Fine Arts is ascribed to Liberal Arts, it may be too little too late like many things in life. https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2015/10/29/wartburg-college-and-other-liberal-arts-institutions-make-drastic-cuts-challenging
  10. I see where you are going and don't necessarily disagree at all. But the guardsters do hold majors like DANCE, Theater, Stage Arts, Costume History (like Cesario), Kinesiology, and Elementary education (you know how those pre-K to 12th graders love to color, sing, flail, throw things and take naps, just like our guardsters.) Naps you wonder? Guess what they are doing behind those Berlin Walls they erect known as "judge blockers?" Brasso, you and the guard may have something in common, no?
  11. here's another thought... Percussion sections rarely go larger than 36 members. But with the horn players (70+) and DM/Conductors (1-4), guard is never more than 1/3 of total corps, more or less.
  12. From the attached article in post #8 above: "Jackson led the list of Southern cities of the laziest by showing up at the bottom. The other nine cities at the bottom of the most active list are; Little Rock, AR, Corpus Christi, TX, New Orleans, LA, Memphis, TN, Lexington, KY, Birmingham, AL, Columbia, SC, Nashville, TN, and Charleston, WV." Given DCI's touring history, contests have occurred in all but Corpus Christi and Championships brought DCI to both Birmingham and Jackson. Couchmen most certainly have some great recurring dreams of these.
  13. Over the years, particularly during marching band season, I have witnessed a number of members who have not let their challenges handicap their participation. Watch along the sidelines, in the front ensemble, in front of the mics many units use and you will see them. Sometimes they have the assistance of other students, sometimes family. Almost always with the welcoming support of the other MMs and clever design staffs/faculty. It's a growth experience not only for the individual member but for the unit as a whole.
  14. I think the Troopers are re-positioning themselves as a "destination" drum corps not merely the JV for someone else's Varsity squad.
  15. So glad that this rumor turned out to be untrue. Now I can nap in peace. http://www.couchmendrumcorps.org/news/couchmen-to-fold-in-2015
  16. Thanks. The noobies among us might find it interesting that the two contests used different type score sheets from each other, had different captions, and awarded points differently due to different emphases. Inspection prior to the contest was judged and negative points were subtracted from the show sheet total. There were many more types of penalties. One of the gifts DCI was to the drum corps community was regularizing score sheets and unifying in one approach how points are allotted and rewarded.
  17. ....while he marched principally under Marc Sylvester's time. i can still hear Sully's bellowing Bostonian from the box on tour, "Dare..........................rul! The other right foot!!! And Toby, unless you are waiting for George Dixon or Tekk, I can't believe you let the day go bye without this mention: today, Oct. 28th is celebrated everywhere as the Feast day of two Apostles, Saints Simon and Jude Thaddeus, the patron of hopeless cases. It is also George Hopkins' birthday. Draw your own conclusions.
  18. I agree with much of what you write. However, Corpsreps.com isn't the best source of proving your position based on history. For instance they make no mention at all of the pivotal Cadets year of 1959. In fact, with not one but several National Championships concurrently happening each season until just after DCI started, pointing to who medaled when is a bit elusive. Corps reps makes no distinction and is missing much. The Cavaliers tended to pursue their standings in the VFW championships where they were most successful. The Cadets (Holy Name, then Garfield monikers) tended to pursue their standings in American Legion championships. As convention cities shifted and corps tended to compete closer to home, both aforementioned corps some seasons, but not all, competed in both, but not always. The Cadets did travel by train to L.A. and the Cavies did tend to come when shows were East. Then there were the later World Open Championships, the CYO Nationals, the U.S, Open Championships, etc., etc. What I am saying is that prior to 1972 rarely was there one definitive corps ranked first, another second, another third in universal agreement by all drum corps fans officially. Of course, The Troopers made their impact on those National Standings and even too the Boston Crusaders and L.I. Kingsmen won "national" titles. Madison spent as much energy at national and international Scout conventions as diverse as Paris, France and Virginia. Coincidentally, the West Coast corps we know now were then playing upright glockenspiels and twirling batons or called the Sunnyvale Sparks; they weren't the corps or organizations that they are today. . Comparisons can be odious.
  19. which were effects used by the late Gary Czapinski (Marie's husband) with his Canadian corps back in the late '70's. I thought the OP was trying to do something of more recent vintage of recent props ending up elsewhere than DCI.
  20. Cadets have a call-in tonight (Weds,) for vet and potential guard members. The ensuing discussion with caption head and GH should reveal more plans and strategies. Percussionists get the opportunity tomorrow night (Thursday) with even greater reveals possible. Further info on Cadets web and FB. Reveals should prosper the discussion on this thread certainly.
  21. Crown tipped me off. Well done, Dad. Scouts must be proud too., http://www.livewellnebraska.com/health/grace-trumpeter-in-wheelchair-gets-to-march-in-formation-with/article_7e7f548b-4b0b-59a0-b3e1-4670d2afe29e.html#.Vi_PyMs50ba.facebook
  22. Evidently the statement in GH's posting was in response to questions from callers who wondered if a new designer would bring different ways.
  23. Hmmn: 76 horns with 16 mellophones (and a mention of "if you audition on French horn...." bringing back great memories of last summer's feature.) That looks like 76-16= 60 which might break down to 24 trumpets, 24 baris, and 12 tubas. or is it 22 trumpets, 22 baris and 16 tubas? This "Common Corps" math is getting to me already, ha, ha. I am definitely ole skool. :-)
