  1. Interesting. Will you be commissioning the piece? maybe for an anniversary or special occasion? (Composers often get inspired that way...)
  2. The intertwined credential legacies* of these three corps is amazing. Maybe nothing like it in DCI history except the shuttle bus that used to run between the two California power houses each Autumn in the '70's. *who marched where/when/with whom...who taught where/when/with whom.
  3. If he brings even half the energy he used on the podium (remember the jumping up and down,) he'll continue to be great. Super-guy and family; another of Canada's best...except for his hockey favorites out their in Calgary!
  4. Given Dan Acheson's busy passport this calendar year, Hopkins desire to grow USBAnds brand, and SystemBlue seeking more and more horizons, how soon before we see DCI Havana??? It's only 90 miles away!!! Why corps do way more than that most nights between shows. DrumBattle and SoundSport have already made in-roads into South and Central America.
  5. but aren't as effective to the judges who have seen the show umpteen times when the corps does the same trick three times (Carolina Crown, sponsored by JoAnn's Fabrics). The oohs and ahs weren't coming from the GE judges but the bando tweens and family spects seeing the show for the first time.
  6. Just back from hospital 3 days and all went well. But as I recover from one trauma, then public news is circulating about Cadets viz...some of it rumor. First off, posters got it right when stated that Mrs. Sacktig's health is more important than dots on viz. field. That being said and while others pontificate about Darryl and Marc, let it be noted that neither of them in these current decades have lasted long on anyone's staff, including Cadets. Besides being the master at number and horn placements, etc. Jeff was the master at organization, communication, and ensemble clarity in what was expected, how it was expected, and when it was expected. Kids were never made to feel like a set of rolled dice, even when the design staff kept changing minds (and endings, etc.) Kids were always respected as the young adults, talented and intelligent as they are, never as guinea pigs or experimentations. I don't have that confidence (yet) either with Sully nor Darryl based on my previous seasons with them and watching their revolving doors of faculty assignments during the last two decades. They both may have a creativity to go past where Jeff has well secured the Cadets. How they do it during practice sessions, winter camps, and Spring training as well as the daily grind of tour will need much preparation, professionalism, and no temper tantrums from either of them. It may work well and push the corps to new heights. But we have to deal with realities not fantasies when it comes to dealing with people, these Cadet young people. And of course, Hopkins has yet to make "the public announcement" on Cadets' official sites, not his occasional musings on his personal sites or the trials and changes on his blabinars.
  7. Quite nice. But you know by August some judge jr. on DCP will be wanting the circles to be rotated simultaneously and others complaining it's a lift from some BOA or TX band.
  8. Ah you would prefer this who is probably a fan of Troopers '15:
  9. That section '15 did have several key age-outs but will probably have 10 auditionees for every '16 opening. I found their parts to be my favorite music of the 2015 show.
  10. too well do I know that. St. Ignatius Girls were still around when those pledge drives were fillers between corps on PBS. Unfortunately, too few drum corps fans actually fulfilled the pledges they made to PBS. (I hope they sent the cheques directly to the corps but I suspect there are a lot of loafers out there who say one thing and do another, or worse, do nothing.)
  11. So far no non-men employed as players as players. NHL won't change until Cavaliers and Madison do.
  12. National Geographic has officially assigned DCPers their own mascots for 2016, amazing creations that unite both dinos, bandos, wannabees, and noobies alike. Parents of noobies may even be awed. http://video.pbs.org/video/2365578436/
  13. Agreed. It's amazing how some staffs ooze with talent that they have to move on to get their own chance at the bat rather than being just one cog in the wheel. Good add, Boston. In fact I have been very impressed on who Boston has collected for '16 and rumors of whom they also approached but weren't available for many reasons. Some one is thinking and researching well.
  14. Nice adds by Crown. Are they supplying Annie with a snow plow to get from Duluth for winter camps? Should thaw there by June training. http://www.carolinacrown.org/web/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=660:front-ensemble-staff-announced&catid=88&Itemid=553
  15. There ya go again, highlighting the design(ers) rather than the performers.
  16. That might explain those guard flags the Coats used '15. But even those might seem too tame for Cherry's jackets.
  17. "marching on" should have the quotes about it given how many saunter, "hold character," piroette, and just "can't we get this over with"/"whatever" type of deportment. Some are appropriate, some don't seem so. Some corps have been spoken to. Ask the Cavaliers ( find the photo of "dead" Samurai dropping prone in front of George Hopkins at Finals Retreat, etc.)
  18. Guardling, You are certainly glossing alot. It's almost 20 years that we've had the dance-a-thon guards. That means that those aging out of DCI this summer have known only this type of guard presentation. For what you consider "old school" and your "youth" would be new for them. Isn't the reason for a Rules Congress to present changes in approach, finesse the present and spark the future, not to maintain the status quo? Can't have it both ways, Guardling.
  19. With the public announcement of Eddy Falco becoming BAC's visual caption guru http://bostoncrusade...l-caption-head/ and Patrick Duncan's retirement in Florida, looks like Cadets' Viz tech team will be waltzing to a different dynamic. Rumor has it that another fairly regular will be jetsetting the country for a few corps. Stay tuned.
  20. Have you just elevated C.C. to the rank of a 'mini-Hopkins'??? Welcome Georgie, Jr.
  21. which the dance-a-thon that has hijacked color guard has become. Give me an old fashioned Rockford file, a 27th Lancers' guard or old school Boston, something that smacks of power (appropriate to the music) rather than all these pastel doilliies flitting about, one at a time so they can't be judged for simultaneous actions. "we planned it that way" bah, humbug. [End of rant about contemporary cookie-cutter color guard.]
  22. So I was wondering where the Coats were getting all their inspiration. Then I realized how many Canadians they have on staff. Could this be it? eh? http://www.pbs.org/newshour/art/native-powwow-a-tribe-called-red/ Hey, Hockey season opens tonight. Have at it men.
  23. Prophets are rarely accepted in their own time. Those who proclaim themselves as prophets rarely are but a legend in their own myth. You're fine.
