Dance Company vs Color Guard
Terri Schehr replied to oldbandguy's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
I think someone on here suggested a name change to Band Corps international. I’m not sure if they were being serious or sarcastic. -

Yeah, throw it all out. Stop calling it drum and bugle corps, too. There are no bugles. -

I think it was 86 that the Cadets had a very small color guard. That was a strange show imho. -

It kind of reminds me of how the Marching Illini have the Illinettes. They’re a dance team. -

Sie Lurye sold off his flat lots in Chicago to keep RA going. I’m sure there are dozens of stories like that. There were a couple of parents who put up their homes as collateral for the Guardsmen. I personally thought that was insane. -

Multiple Corps Auditions “Urban Legend”?

I’m probably going to hate that I said this but that sounds kind of predatory to me. -

Part of it was people I marched with in Norwood park had went over to the Guardsmen and said she has a lot of experience. I was not even close to special besides being a very good sightreader, but I was consistent and a good soldier. -

One of the things that kind of bugs me about nowadays, is that a younger person, say 16 years old, can audition for the local corps, make it down to the last two for one spot, and they’ll pick the age out kid from 1000 miles away rather than the kid who lives nearby and has several more years left to march. Seems short-sighted to me. BTW, this really happened. I personally told the founder of the corps about it and he found it very disturbing. -

They took me into the kitchen at the Skokie American legion hall. Handed me a longie v/r French horn that I had never played and asked me to play some scales. In Guardsmen, I didn’t have to do anything because people knew me. -

I have some experience with this. I was working bingo at my son’s Catholic school. Someone took another woman’s seat, they started exchanging punches, and the police were called. They are very territorial about where they sit, I guess. They have bingo at the HOA center where I live, my neighbor asked me to go, but what if I sit in the wrong seat? Am I gonna get my ### kicked by a snowbird? -

Wow. Maybe for parades. DCA isn’t even around anymore for them to try to weasel in there. -

I’m sorry they didn’t have better weather here. I think we’re going to have a true El Niño winter.
