  1. Ugh, people that don't understand the structure are not going to be helpful. The structure failed, but if you don't understand why, how and what it takes to LEGALLY change it, you are failing too. Could DA have done something different? Probably. But the structure of a competition committee is different than a wholly owned operation. Much like 501c10 orgs fall under an umbrella and 501c3 orgs operate on their own. One follows the governing body structure similar to service orgs that have local chapters and a national body and the other is like your local art center that may belong to an association, but runs under it's own rules. Just yelling that DA didn't do enough doesn't do anything. The question that needs to be asked is what structure can we create that allows corps to retain their identity, but force them to give up control and self governance. Would BD enjoy sharing the wealth their ingenuity and success have created with Spirit or Madison? No, OK so then what? So, being serious, now what? Change is needed, but how do you get all of the members on the same page without watching the G7 threat return. Obviously, it needs to be fixed. But instead of simply blaming DA, let's fix the structure that failed in a useful and legal way. It's not easy, and ultimately the lack of foresight might be the end of an activity we all enjoyed.
  2. 501c cooperations usually are regulated at the state level. I know in my state we have to submit out bylaws to the AG whenever they change. Go Scouts!
  3. Yeah, but I'd pay to see it live. I do look forward to seeing a turn around for the corps this year and how it plays out.
  4. With all of the dirt coming to light, I was glad that Madison wasn't on the front page. I was a little nervous to see what was being said.
  5. It wasn't an excuse. Getting everyone to quickly agree on an organizational structure change is like herding cats. In order to gain power someone has to lose power. I'm not against it BTW, but the changed made will need to be well thought out, vetted and strong enough to have teeth. But if you make a drastic change without planning the rules of unintended consequences always apply. Also, moist states have rules on how bylaws can be changed. There must be proper notice, sometimes several readings and sweet meeting dates depending on the bylaws and 501c3 rules set by the state ag office or tax office depending on the state. That is time consuming no matter how much change is needed. The director and board of each corps can effect change themselves quite easily, do it themselves until DCI can change the rules as needed.
  6. This probably needs to happen, but it makes me sad.
  7. They are, but if DCI were to fold tomorrow those corps still could control their own purse stings and move on to what ever comes next as an organization. That's why DCI 's scope is limited. They control the judging and venues, but not the corps themselves. Without DCI, the corps still find another way but without corps there is no DCI.
  8. The real problem here is as you said, DCI would need a complete overhaul. The cooperate structure would have to change. Dci doesn't own the corps, the corps own DCI. I'm not trying to stop change, but to everyone that is asking why DCI doesn't step in more, the answer is they can't. Not yet anyways. Obviously the press is going to putting pressure on them to change, but the corporate structure will need to change completely to give DCI the power to enforce the rules. I'm not sure some of the better run corps would want to give up control as it stands, so we may see another g7 type breakaway threat in the future. Interesting times.
  9. Trolls alive and well. Meghan is part of the scouts history now and has earned her place there. Take the rest of your sexist sh!? and go elsewhere. The scouts have a design staff issue. The MMs are performing this thing as well as any corps could with the weight that they are bearing. I'm quite frankly glad to see the Scouts members follow through on what they started. Its been a rough year and I'm sure the outside forces permeate into there lives. I'm not proud of the vehicle they've been given, but I'm proud of their effort. I hope they know their talent has shown through and your stupid argument is just another internet meme that no one will remember.
  10. This is true, and makes me sad. I'm glad for the bluecoats, I was never a big fan in my younger years. They seen to enjoy playing to the crowd the way Madison once did. Good for them. Scouts take notes, but try to learn from them, not blindly follow.
  11. I understand liability and safety, but refunds should be in order. I missed the GE of the uniform and I paid for it. I'm ok with safety, but it is proof that DCI doesn't care that there are non parent fans.
  12. I'm a Dino, but as a brass player I wanted to be surrounded by other brass that made up the wall of sound that at the time was what DCI meant, at least in my eyes. If you're not going to be a constant contender, why not be the place where acoustic music comes first and appeal to those that want to be part of that group. Aim to be a cutting edge musical hornline and build the rest of the program around that. I didn't want to put my horn down because you're only on the field for minutes, I wanted to play. Chase that crowd. Or maybe there isn't enough young ones in that crowd. I don't know. Following isn't the answer.
