  1. The former DM became a principal of a high school and was later asked to retire due to his hypnotism thing he did
  2. Since my original post....my how things change. So, that being said, My corps staff members weren't tyrants nor were they egotistical. We worked hard as a smaller (A class corps) and I did find judging flawed (oops am I changing the post?) Yes, in NY we could never get a break but got to Marion (US Open) or other shows outside of NY and we scored better.
  3. Assuming that the top 11 return to finals (obviously minus SCV), who gets the extra spot? Crossmen, Blue Knights, Madison or Academy? Does another corps drop out?
  4. Just an idea that popped into my head.... Why not turn the remaining corps into professional drum corps? Members get paid. Corps are owned by wealthy people, etc. Get the idea?
  5. Sheffield...... I remember we were always given a Clubhouse that looked like a house. You had to go across a foot bridge to get there. I think there was a fire there in the 80's. I do remember going there in mid 80's with Rochester Patriots. The parade was on Route 666 which was scary!
  6. Ahhhh Sheffield! Used to have the competition on the field along the road in front of the carnival.
  7. I couldn't see Summer Marching Band. That would mean school districts would have to pay band directors more money to teach in the summer. No chance for a break until December. What band director would do that?
  8. A corps rich in tradition! A corps that year after year were top 10 in all of drum corps, winning it a few times since 1973. A corps that set the bar on traveling every summer and being successful. All of a sudden can't make it work? Add the allegations! Hmmmm more to this story maybe?
  9. Guesses? I know it's only December. SCV has already announced. DCA corps may have to wait until February or March but I will guess some will not come out. Don't know if gas prices will go up again, bus rental costs will be up, etc.
  10. Agree!!!! The smaller corps will not be able to afford touring nor a huge staff. the top directors for the longest time probably could care less about the bottom corps. Corps like SCV, BD, Cadets, CC and Bluecoats are in it for them and stood on the mountain top pushing them off. King of the mountain!
  11. So it dawned on me....... We were calling for change 20 years ago (maybe longer)! Now with all the turmoil in our country the past 2 years, we see the rise of costs for everything. This won't be just Santa Clara Vanguard. It will be other corps and especially from California. Finances and people that can't keep their hands off of the kids. Okay, they do "background checks" whatever is their resources. Not the FBI or PD's probably. A few calls here and there maybe? An in. sane amount of staff? Crazy. Titles for staff members that, you would think, resemble TV shows or Broadway musicals. Lets see what happens with the remainder of the corps between now and May. How many will go inactive or close up the store? After drum corps dies then the marching band world will be next. I have a hard enough time getting my choral students to pay $150. What is the rate for High School BOA Marching band these days?
  12. I remember either following the Monarchs or going on before the them at US Open. In fact I remember them because prelims for A Class were at another school (either 73 or 74).
  13. My world in the 1970's was rehearsals on Tuesday and Thursday evening and every other Sunday. 1976 was a killer as our marching staff were tough on us!
  14. In the 1970's it was a stop at a McDonald's, Burger King, Harvey's, Red Barn. That was lunch and dinner. I don't remember breakfast. I do remember Big Boy in Marion. In the 1980's (Rochester Patriots) we would stop at Ponderosa.

  16. ...The corps season started in May? Yes in 1976 we (Royal Coachmen) traveled to Canton, OH the 3rd weekend of May. Competed against Bluecoats and someone else (maybe Rose City Guardsmen). Then the next weekend was two contests in Michigan (St. Claire Shores and Riverview - I think). I also think we had a show the second weekend in September too.
  17. Ya know, with the small amount of corps left in DCI, why a huge stadium anyways?
