  1. If anyone gets lost coming out of RFK seems the only ******* people who know how to find the highway are homeless. Went to Rolling Stones Voodoo Lounge concert there and got hung up in the cluster **** ring a round the rosie traffic pattern around the stadium. Got to see the car leading our parade go down a side street as the rest of us kept going in a circle. Hour of drving back and forth later found a gas station and asked guy standing by the pumps how to get back to the beltway. Guy gave me great directions then hit me up for $$$$. Wish I would have given him more as it was worth it....
  2. Same here as I have relatives up past that way in Renovo (aka land that jobs forgot).... Only guess I have is maybe Lancers were the American Legion corps (AL Post #131) since VFW had the Black Knights. Biggest employer in Lock Haven during the 60s would have been Piper Aircraft (Piper Cub) but then the corps should have had an airplane type name. Only other thing going for Lock Haven is the college but that would have been a small Teachers College back then. IOW, there ain't much there.... there.
  3. Having to host a show was also a DCA and RCA (small Sr) circuit requirement back the in 70s. The two(?) years we competed in both circuits we had to host two shows. The DCA show was in Carlisle HS stadium which is pretty good sized. RCA show was held in a stadium maybe little over half of Carlisles size. Having to host a show was another reason why few non-NE Sr corps came to DCA. No one wanted to come to thier show.
  4. Interesting <$1 to C Montgomery Burns>.... All Age world is expanding with smaller corps and appears same is spreading to the Junior world. Best of luck to all from a guy who competed in a circuit for small Sr corps. :)
  5. While back I either spoke, PM'ed or posted (can't remember ) with a member of the Manchester Muchachos about being evaluated by DCI. Only thing I remember (could have been more) was that the licensing for music played was all correct. This is done to protect DCI and the corps. This would allow the Muchachos to play at DCI show up N'arth.... to get more exposure. And checking the article, the two All Age corps in the Atlantic are both non-competative (aka Alumni type) corps so DCA isn't involved anyway.
  6. Here's what 3 years of HS band, 1 of College band and 6 years of DC all done of macadam parking lots might do to ya a few decades later in life... :sshh: No cartledge in big toes so bone spurs that look like you're growing another toe.... Leads to spur removal surgery and cortizone shots which only treats the symptoms... Which (2 years ago) leads to joint replacement (hey I got replacement parts ) in the worst toe. Holding breath but feels better and can do parades after taking more ibuprofin than recommended (don't take for too long or stomach problems). Can also tell when it's cold and damp out without checking the Weatther Channel. :sshh:
  7. No Yuengling.... and they call it Paradise.. *snort* For Jimbayalas' benefit - substitue 'Victory' for 'Yuengling'
  8. Oh man love "do what ya can with what ya got" stories from corps. Shades of Rochester Phoenix (Sr) who supposedly outfitted their new corps with JC Penney work coveralls topped with homemade sash and Aussie hat. And like VK they also rocked the corps world....
  9. Haven't seen reasons I heard for grounding tymp and bells (the original pit). Either read or was told that: 1) Having one person play all tymps freed up three people to play other percussion. 2) As drill started opening up (IOW - no more up 'n down the 50), slower moving tymps and huge bells were bogging down the drill. End result was to be more (non-tymp) percussion bodies being able to do more with drill. Seeing the number of bodies in the pit today sure didn't work out that way.
  10. Unless you're talking driving time during rush hour.... ^0^ Back in 1992 (after the last SF earthquake) spent few weeks between Sacramento and SF in Vallejo(sp!)/Fairfield area. Drive time to SF airport was 45 minutes non-rush hour and 3.5 HOURS during rush hour. (I drove it one time and they weren't kidding.) Main problem was some freeway exit ramps were missing due to the earthquake and 6 lanes of highway went down to 2 for a few spots due to reconstruction. Night before our flight we stayed at an hotel next to the airport so we wouldn't have to leave at 3AM to catch a morning flight.
  11. Good to hear your "historic" (know that feeling :P ) perspective too. Read a post about "facing the crowd" and my first thought was drill to end of Skys' "Elks Parade" and Cabs "Flamingo Cha Cha" after concert numbers. For you younger folks, the drill for the end of both songs was company front towards to the stands playing LAHP (loud as humanly possible).....
  12. American Legion, VFW, inner city parishes all starting going downhill from the 60s on. Not only were AL/VFW posts no longer able to support corps and other "social" groups (sports teams, etc) like before, many posts actually closed doors due to declining membership. The AL started with returning WWI vets and got a huge membership increase after WWII. Korea, Vietnam and other conflicts did little to make up for deaths of WWI/WWII members. And if anyone knows of a website with numbers of AL members and posts over the years please let me know. I've been looking for this info for a while for my own interests. Wished I had saved my dads (Korea Vet/50+ year AL member) Legion magazines over the years. Trivia note about AL and DC: The American Legion started the "Sons of the American Legion" in the mid to late 1930s in order to keep the Legion and its' ideas going. Problem was the members (WWI vets) were getting older so programs were started for the members sons. (No one had a crystal ball to know that WWII would start a new generation of veterans.) Some of the programs started by the Legion were sports teams and..... Drum Corps for the under 21 set.... This was the start for many Junior corps.....
  13. Yeah, you can only do so much with bending straight lines around and hauling ### to the stands playing full bore. :P (Before anyone flames, check my sig) LMAO as I've already admitted to walking away for 10 years cause I got bored off my butt watching a DCI show in 1992 or 1993. And shows with amps/vocals leave me cold. *shrug* Different strokes for different folks.
  14. Elph... what kind of G bugle are you thinking of what you say that? Asking as I'm pretty sure my beloved piston/rotor could "out volume" the 3 Valved G I play today. And age ain't the whole reason for it. IMO, those P/R horns weren't too far removed from the "signaling device" role that bugles originally played. Heh, maybe I should pull out the 1 valved 1950s G I bought and see if it's louded than my current 3 valve. I'll play both then call the neighbors to see which one they heard. (And I don't live in a condo ^0^ )
  15. Ooops, should have mentioned that all flaming I've seen and/or received has been on RAMD or DCP. The few times I've been around current DCI members in person has been a good experience. And of all corps it has been Cadets I've have bumped into and talked to for a few seconds. First I get the "wow look at that guy with a bari" look as a 5' 6", pudgy, balding, bearded Bari is not something they normally see. Soon as I ask "How you guys doing" the smiles kick in. And have heard thru the grapevine some good comments directed towards my Alumni corps from some of the DCI folks.
  16. Note: Not directed at TSRT13, his post just got me thinking about this. One thing to consider before we get too deep into which era knows the past better is the availiblity of older recordings. Great thing about marching in the 2000s as opposed to 1970s is that you are able to buy sights and sounds from the past. When I marched the only "old" stuff was couple years old bargin box (literally a cardboard box) albums at a few shows. Only really old sounds I bought was a re-release of a 1960 Fleetwood album that Drum Corps News was going to start a series of. Few months later the Fleetwood masters were lost in a fire and that killed the idea. Couldn't even buy current videos as they were not for sale. Today cleaned up versions of Fleetwood and other album sounds are for sale thanks to modern technology. Todays marchers can hear and see shows with the previous "generation" of horns and drums (IOW piston/rotor and pre-pit). Now I can also hear my previous generation of corps (tenor baris, no contras/mid-voice, tenor snare drums). And those generations DO have a world of differences.
  17. Which fits into my prediction for DCI by 2020 or so. Due to increased cost and other reasons/excuses DCI goes down to either 12 or 18 corps. Corps broken down into 2 or 3 groups of 6 corps each. First half of season each group tours together to save gas, housing, etc, etc where DCI sets up all logistics. At midway point there is a major regional with all corps, then the corps "shuffle" into new groupings of 6.
  18. The idea in starting this thread to discuss why DC seems to have a higher level of bashing than any other activity I can think of. With the possible exception of NASCAR beer cans and assorted dangerous #### thrown at Div I football games. No argument from me which era gets the most crap thrown at it. Then again almost everyone on DCP had either seen or read about shows today so that target is bigger.
  19. Hey my first car was 1966 Chevy Impala. Thing had what we called a "basket transmission". The basket was so you had something to put the trannie pieces in when they fell out on the road. PS - I laughed at that poem. And if anyone posts a rebuttal poem I'd probably laugh at that too. Yeah, go figure I'm almost 50 and can't wait for Simpsons and Mind of Mancia new episodes tonight. De, De, Deeee..
  20. OK.... Who wants to explain why it even matters which side does it more??? Sheesh, I'm waiting for the old "they started it" defense. <**>
  21. Howsa 'bout the Guelph Royalaires??? Never saw Les Dips live as they broke up just as I found DC but have heard recordings. Seeing the Alumni play oughta be fun. :)
  22. Jeez, talk about someone who doesn't "get it". <**> Why don't we just get rid on any corps that doesn't hit Top 12 after a certain number of years. Div I included.....
  23. Beginning to think a lot has to do with style of instruction. Seems emphasis today is on tone and blend instead ye olde "it' the end of the show ... let 'er rip!!!". Unless you're talking about ye olde, olde piston/rotor horns. Those bad batisches were MADE to be loud....
  24. Learn something new every day. Never knew about the Frenchie in the 30s. Is the singing corps pic from History of Drum Corps? Think it is Germantown Post carrying megaphones. Maybe some day they'll bring back the fifes too. :P
  25. I started marching in 1974 in a Sr corps and we had members that started back in the late 50s. Biggest gripe I remember hearing was about those ### #### tink tink marching bells which started popping up in the mid 1970s. That and corps (starting with DCI) "playing #### no one recognizes". And in response to Duder, biggest slams I remember coming from newer members to the older was when the amp and Bb flame wars were starting up. "Dinosaurs" and "you hate all change" were thrown around a good bit. To be fair to the younger set, those flames have died down to a few embers. Ironic thing is I walked away from corps in either 1992 or 1993 (#### middle aged memory) because I thought it had passed me by at the "old" age of 35. Got so #### bored I walked out of the stadium in the middle of a corps show and didn't go back until 2003. Later I read History of DC book and found out lot of other people were less than happy with shows during that time. Only corps related thing I did during that time was buy the DCA tapes the years they came out. (That's how I found out my corps won DCA in 1996 )
