  1. I want to se the top 12 entertaining shows, the 12 shows that entertain ME. (Sorry everyone else) Phantom Crown Cadets Madison Cavies Boston Spirit Crossmen Pioneer Troopers SCV Blue_________ (Add coats, Knights or Stars....... No Devils!) Ask me again after I see everyone in Atlanta.
  2. I'm good. I really was confused, hence the question. Clarification. Thanks.
  3. ???????????? Was this a failed attempt at 1) Sarcasm 2) Humor or 3) Troll Baiting without a license . Enquiring minds want to know?
  4. Or a good midwestern bratwurst!!!!! Either way, I'm happy! I know Regiment will "Get it right". Looking forward to seeing/hearing the work they've done the last few days.
  5. What this guy said. I think we have the same t-shirt, right, Donny?
  6. First, I'm not knocking anything that anyone is doing at PR. I've been in their shoes and understand all too well the limitations of the drum corps tour world as compared to the "armchair quarterback" world we are in as observers/fans sitting in front of the computer screen. So "A Time For Us": What can be done to make it stronger, while being sure to continue to amplify the story? Melodic structure is simple A-B-A. First A - Leave it alone except for tweaks B - Is boring and feels like the filler used in a cheap hot dog. So what do we do to a cheap hot dog? Either smother it in condiments to cover up the cheap dog - the core is still a bad filler, or we add a little good filler and lots of spices, etc. and change it into something more than a crappy hot dog.....say, a brat or smoked sausage. Idea - Take the B section and intertwine the Juliet theme (Eden) AND Elsa's (a little foreshadowing). If you need to trash the original B section, do it. A section part II (hit) Use the end of B to make a musical build into the hit. The A melodic material needs a countermelody added. Bite the bullet and build a "clap here dummy" moment. Build out of the last minor chord, throw three nice, big chords in progression and resolution at FF, release ('Clap here, dummy') and continue the resolution/transition. Ahh, the transition to Proko: One of the longest phrases, both musically and visually. Also a momentum killer. Is being addressed, so I'll keep my opinion. And now back to your regularly scheduled program, already in progress.
  7. My daughter and I talked last night. This will show you how one hand doesn't always know what the other is doing! From what I hear, there are only fixes going in: The pacing and staging of the Lacrymosa to set up the "dance" ala ballad; the dead time (what a momentum killer an d a non-trnsition) from the end of ballad I and beginning of Proko, etc. Now, this comes from a color guard person, who had the experience enough to say, "The horns and percussion may have drill changes, but we know we don't......We're on seperate fields most of the day." To her, lots of adjustments, with the exception of some rewritten guard work. As long as there are improvements in the program......Life is good.
  8. If all goes well, I'll get to see them the week before. Plus Murf, ATL and semis and finals. This kid is breaking this band director!$$$$$$
  9. Yeah, Wagner shows up at the end of the show. My opinion: Wagner wrote as dark if not darker than Shostakovich. My opinion, nothing more, nothing less. My daughter's opinion: She has yet to come off the field without being teary eyed. THAT'S why she does drum corps! Mission accomplished..........so far. This program will grow and morph like everyone else's show. We get to watch and see what happens! Sounds like a good summer!
  10. I just bought tickets for Atlanta today and have seats on the 40, about 25 rows up. Also, CALL Ticketmaster. Because it's DCI, Row 1 of the lower section is actually the top row in the section. Example - Row 38 (I think) is actually row 1.
  11. Thanks Whiskey! PAAARRTTTTAAAAAYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!
  12. Okay, we sat in the same theater together and watched the same broadcast. For the record, I've been a visual designer AND horn arranger on and off since 1985. We'll agree to disagree about BD's "top 3" visual package. We will agree that it's staged well and it is winterguard in its approach. Transitions are good and for the most part, BD ihas the best marchers/movers out there. However, the drill design doesn't do 2 things: 1)It doesn't generate effect. It's a backdrop for a winterguard show. Welcome to the world of Jay Murphy and Scott Chandler. 2) It's not on the same level as many of the other top tier corps. Sorry, my opinion. As for your definition of GE - It's not that simple. We have taken this activity to the edge of obscurity because of our esoteric BS definition of Effect. Effect CAN be generated by those things you listed that it's not....if programmed correctly. There are things in a show that meet your criteria of "How and DOES it work together" that are not effect. We have to step away from the precipice of taking ourselves too seriously before there is no drum corps activity anymore. I've worked with Michael Cesario and Scott Koter (Programming coordinator for Cavies) and the one thing that both agree in is that we have to bring more entertaining (to the masses) shows to the field. Does that mean we all break out into "We Will Rock You" and do a mosh pit. Dear Lord, I hope not! We're in a tough business. Don't get me wrong, I think that effect is any thing that gets to an audience. They don't always have to clap for it and scream like babies. A smart programming job will have both the "clap here dummies" moments as well as those moments that the crowd lets out a collective sigh. We will agree that Bluecoats can change their vocal and get as much effect, and they won't tick off some mommy and daddy who've brought their 7 year old to their first corps show. Now as far as the guard unis..........Who knows, the 7 year old might really dig it, which could really put mommy and daddy over the edge!
  13. Personally, I want to see a season of shows that I enjoy. Period. There are always shows that are technically superior but downright boring. I want a season where I can pop the BluRay in and not have to skip a show!
  14. The average fan is 1) The one who buys the majority of tickets, 2)Is more learned than I think you give them credit and 3)Is allowed to golf clap...They bought the ticket. If I'm at a show and I don't particularly like the show (not the performance), I'll give an appreciative clap. Don't expect me to jump up and throw babies for technicality without effect.
  15. Report from the daughter: Phantom guard felt like they had a good run, especially with the wind. Horns said they felt flat. No idea about percussion. (Who really knows the mind of a drummer?????) One down, many more to go. Can't wait to see how the shows evolve!
  16. Not bad....not good? Looking @ pic, tail on back reminds me of BK when they had the LONG jackets - Star Trek show. It makes them look short when viewing the back.
  17. Delay - Daughter says the rain is a comin' down!
  18. YESSS!!! Go Phantom, especially that guard! (Actually, love it all!) See you Monday!
  19. Guard Unis: Classy, effective and will work. Corps Unis: Concept is understood and should work well. Would like to see a group in unis from 20 yards away to see real effect. Concerns: Silver placard/shield (not the mirror) may not contrast enough with the white of the jacket, losing effect. Personal preference: Would like to have the front of the jacket more pointed to help mimic the shield. Just my 2 cents worth......And I want my change back!
