  1. i've been taping sabres forever. hehe... so it's not that difficult for me... i do it a little differently.. i sit crossed-legged and set the sabre across my legs so that the blade is curved up... i then run the white tape alone the top of the blade (where it would be sharp if it was real) making sure it is in the middle of the tape.. once i get from the hilt to the tip.... i then go a push it down on the sides.. it may take a couple times of doing this till u get it right.. but after awhile.. u'll be a pro.. as for the tip.. i just cut about 10 pieces about and inch and a half long and put it over the tip (point) of the blade. the i take more tape and wrap around that so that stays on.. i also wrap some tape around the blade at the hilt.... for a spotter tape.. i do wrap the black tape around the blade... i use my finger to find the balance point on the sabre... and then wrap the black tape around there...... as for a white cheater tape... every group does it different.. the group i teach uses 36" kings.. and i put the tape at 20 1/2" from the hilt.... but that's my group.. i know other teams do it at different spots...
  2. GOOF OFF IS AMAZING STUFF.. NOT GOO GONE.. GOOF OFF IS INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH... make sure u use it outside..i think u can get it at lowes.. sorry for the caps...
  3. we have spray painted bolts before.. they are gonna look the same color as the bolts you would buy from premier...... but they won't be as nasty and chip off if u buy them....
  4. i've spun a synthetic king and do not like them at all.. they spin funny, and the blade was not the same as a regular king. the bike handle was really heavy. if u want the look, i would assume it's the best alternative.. i don't know how durable it is, but it still does not spin like a regular king....
  5. we used curved poles when i helped teach at reading buccaneers in 04 and 05.. we used 7' poles that we bent down to 6' i think.... we used a hand held pipe bender that we got at home depot. we broke the pole down into 5 even sections, then started bending a little at a time at each section til we matched our first pole that we bent. it is hard to spin these flags, and the work u write is somewhat limited because the pole will twist and "flop" over if u don't write to the way the pole spins. i have a video of us using them in 2005 on my myspace.. . if you would like to see it.. send me a message and i will send u the link....
  6. they are more "dainty" and pretty.. but... flags can be too.... not quite so much rifles.. but.......... curves.. i guess they could be..... it's all in how u use it................ we all know that..
  7. i do the same exact thing................ never had a problem.. just get the bad stains out first...
  8. i had this issue when i was in high school. if we were in concert band we had to be in marching band unless u played football. as for me, i was unable to be in color guard because i played an instrument. the groupings for the circuit were based on number of instrumental performers. not total performers. so, being a musician, i had to stay a musician to count for numbers.... try starting an indoor guard as a club in the high school and middle school... see if u can get more people exposed to it.... like mike said, word of mouth is the best way to start.
  9. hey mike! we've had this discussion up here in pa w/ the classics organization. we actually started recruiting. we talk to local instructors that we know.. tell them to watch our a guard.. and ask them to send graduates our way if they are going to college locally. it seems like it is starting to work. for starting a new guard... i think i would ask around to the staffs at local shows... ask them to talk to their kids if they are interested in spinning after hs. we also have the kids do recruiting by word of mouth... u bring a member that makes into uniform... u get a discount on dues. so if u know kids that are interested in it.. tell them to bring friends... as for "the guard".... u know how we recruit. talk to ur local instructors.. see if they're interested in performing for their kids. it's always a good time in sr guard.... looks like u already have the ideas. just need to put it into motion.. u've been around the organization to see how it works... try it.. u never know what could happen... oh.. and hand out business cards to propective members!!! that way they know exactly how to get ahold of u. u might have a rough start.. but u have to remember.. "we all start somewhere"
  10. we sanded our rifles a little bit already to take some of the "slick" off from the paint.... that might help.. just sand it. don't take all the paint off...
  11. from the sound of ur posts.. u fit right in then.... best of luck
  12. http://www.westernband.com/Pages/Flags_Poles.htm#Mirror i found it here and at algy.. i'm sure other places have it. maybe even ur local hardware store.
  13. i had this happen to me.. the blade was slightly warped. when i contacted them, they said i could send it back.. but all they were going to do was try to bend it back to shape... not replace it.. so now.. i just bend it back over my knee. it holds for a little while....
  14. NO.. an A guard should not be throwing ensemeble 7's... but i could see a solo being ok
  15. adam.. it was a general comment.. saying that taking bits and pieces from here and there has been done many many times in many medias and have been successful.. not just "spoof" movies, but those are the first things that popped into my mind. so... if u stop being a smart ### and stop acting like u know everything.. maybe u would see that..... done w/ this topic.. and again.. sincerely. have a nice day :)
  16. 2-2.25lbs is usually considered light.. call john and talk to him.. tell him what u want.. he's a nice guy to talk to and will try to give u what u want..
  17. adam.. the comment was a reply to a devil advocate's comment about taking chapters of a book and rearranging them.. has nothing to do w/ drum corps... please read the whole post first before trying to argue.... thank you. have a nice day
  18. don't they already do this w/ movies????? just take different segments of different movies and "enhance" them.............. ie: scary movie.. not another teenage movie.... etc. people find them entertaining... just stating..... it's already done in the media...
  19. i would call them and let them know.. i know i have some that have some rough spots.. but they haven't cut anyone... let them know.. they might send u new one and have u return the 2 u have.... or atleast tell u how to fix it
  20. i just go to home depot and but a full box from there... they usually have the boxes behind the loose ones..
  21. BEST OF LUCK THIS SEASON!!! the show sounds like a great one. and i'm honestly a bit jeaslous. since i left my gloves on the feild at rochester last season, i will not be back. life beyond drum corps calls. however, i will be around to visit occasionally. best of luck to my color guard friends marching and teaching!
