  1. Try blowing into the small end...........and............Practice.....practice.........practice......THERE ARE NO SHORT-CUTS...Geeeeeeez
  2. Original owner of this horn. Have all the mutes( includes plumbers helper) and a hamilton horn stand. Need to pay for my new Kanstul Melli. (actually the melli's paid for but I could use the cash). No dings, dents, or scratches and and notes left in the horn that were never used b**bs eMail me
  3. I was fortunate enough to be introduced to Raphael Mendez back in 1957 when I was 14. He demonstrated circular breathing at his clinic and in concert played the melody line to "Carnival of Venice" and the variations at the same time. Just to take it up a notch he did this with "ONE FINGER" and never took a breath. Whose Kenny G????
  4. Wish I could help. Will keep my eyes and ears open. I really have missed your Corps' at DCA Finals. My wife and I always thought you should have placed much higher than you did. Super CLEAN BRASS and a lot of talent. I know it's French but, what was the "YELL" you did at the begining of your show? I know it fired up the crowd. B)
  5. First off I must admitt I have been a die-hard CABS fan since 1960 and probably always will be. (It's a Latin thing with me I guess). Just finished watching the 2004 Finals at DCA Scranton in the seclusion of my Den and have drawn the following conclusions as to why, I believe, the Empire Statesmen, clearly won this show. Keep in mind that this is strictly my opinion based on my own criteria and the talent level, which was exhibited by all the Corps' I believe was on an even playing field. 1) Dynamics 2) Contrast 3) Flow 4) Entertainment Value I believe their choice of Caption Heads and/or arrangers coupled with attitude and a particular sense of style that remains unique to them is responsible. (I particularly liked the heavy-set BALD guy on Melli.......extremely light on his feet) b**bs
  6. ...you win .....and it's cheaper than JAMAICA..... b**bs
  7. ......let's just move everyone to JAMAICA...... :P
  8. After winning the mini-corps' Championship in Scranton in the mid 1990's (not sure of the exact year right now) Our show was a tribute to the New York Skyliners. We performed our show in the parking lot at Lackawana stadium for Butch Anderson and we were directed by "KONGA". Doesn't get much better.........
  9. Don't have a clue as to what's NEXT BEST but having said that I have a King Silver Flair and they also are rarely listed anywhere. Not sure what that means but I'm bored to death so I thought I'd respond. b**bs :sshh:
  10. Water freezes at a higher temperature than oil. (it's a density thing that someone more knowledgable can explain). Take the valves out.....wipe them off.....add valve oil as normal.......refrain from playing the horn (just kidding about playing). Moisture is the enemy here. Simple science. (Gotta go watch M*A*S*H re-runs) THE END b**bs (KISS)

  12. Just returned from one of our music stores here in Erie and a Sax player who has just relocated here suggested a thin layer of contact cement on top of the valve button as he sometimes uses it on his Sax keys. As for feel I think a layer of something other than base metal would cause a slight non-resonance and give more of a feel to the horn. I could be wrong but I think a sense of difference in timbre gives you a better feel. Just my thoughts. I know I was more comfortable with my Getzen and the pearl inlays as far as feel. I do like the Kanstul though. Hey.....Thanks for the reply. :)
  13. .........See how slippery?......even double-posted itself!!! (sorry :sshh: )
  14. Scenerio: New Kanstul melli with silver plated valve buttons. Like the horn, great weight balance, great valve response. Problem: Fingers slide all over the valve keys with or without gloves (didn't realize pearl inlays gave just enough friction to keep from sliding my "FAT FINGERS" into the eyes of the guy next to me) b**bs I'm sure I'm not the first with this experience. Your solutions or ideas please. Sanding the tops of the buttons is OUT! (yea.....I'm that fussy). I also realize the distance between the bottom of the button and the top of the felt is critical to valve position. ( Oh.....some of you probably didn't know that right?)...AAAAAAAAnyway...your thoughts please. :)

    HORN OCD

Scenerio: Purchased a Getzen Titleist Melli about 10 years ago. Sold it recently and bought a new Kanstul Melli. The Getzen had no dings, dents, or scratches, and was in brand new condition. An excellent horn. I had no reason to part with it other than I thought I wanted a Kanstul. Why?.......Why would I do that? Even at 61 years of age I have a pretty good ear, I think I play pretty good. Have any of you been here? Getting ready to give it the first bath (.....gotta rinse away the California grit ...).
  19. I really want to believe that.....but......oil being lighter than water (density is probably the proper term) .....oil will float on the water on the valve and actually, I believe, the opposite is true. Anyone who did the Macy's parade in '94 can tell you. As soon as we got off the buses (10 of them to be exact) I don't think there was a free valve out of 1,000. If I'm not mistaken water weighs 8.33 lbs./gal and oil is about 6.25 lbs./gal (or so). That's why it floats. Not trying to be argumentative ......just the way I see it.........
  20. Back to the topic. I believe the 6V is the melli mouthpiece of choice. Yes, you can use a 7c, 3c, 10c, 14A4A. Your range with these, IMO, will be spectacular. But you might as well switch to soprano because that is what you will sound like. The 6V was designed for the melli to give it the correct color. THE END, signed....ME
  21. King Silver Flair Kanstul G Melli (still new in the box) haven't got around to teaching it yet b**bs
  22. Price may have increased. Just going by their web site price list and what I just paid. BTW mine just arrived last nite. b**bs b**bs (Don't know why a 61 year old man needs a new horn anyway....do you?)
  23. Unless you specified a finish other than silver they list for $795.00....shipping/engraving is extra but the list price is still the same. Yes, mouthpiece is extra too.
