  1. Here's their newest ad campaign. http://www.united.com/link/0,6746,55068,00...6/02/28&time=15 Garry
  2. Hi, Bill! It was in Phoenix, and the "official" high for the day was 126. Actual temperatures on asphalt or practice fields could have been different. They closed Sky Harbor Airport because, 1) the tarmac was melting, and 2) the air was too thin to guarantee enough lift to get a plane off the ground (with enough room to abort the takeoff if it couldn't). Didn't a lot of the corps members go to the movies with the Freelancers? Garry
  3. Did Steve do more than one release? If not, then he must have been psychot...ummm...psychic to have questions from 1985 included! :P Garry PS Got it!
  4. Casey Smith is the early news anchor on the local CBS station in Las Vegas now. Garry
  5. Curious what "way back" means, year-wise. We've seen posts from as far back as 1977. Vernee Grecny beat the gender barrier in 1970 in VK's snare line. Garry
  6. I see what you mean, and it might be hard to give a clear definition. Heck, some people think their favorite 4th place show should have won! Look closely. I included one of those with 79 Crossmen vs Troopers. I'm sure there are many more. Garry
  7. Hmmm...no votes for VK's day-glo yellow? Or prism-mirror? ^0^ Garry
  8. Bringing forth an idea from the Classic Countdown thread... What if DCI wanted to show some of the closest and hotly debated finishes in DCI history? Here are some that might be considered. What are yours? 75 Madison Scouts vs Santa Clara Vanguard 77 Blue Devils vs Phantom Regiment (and 79, too!) 79 Crossmen vs Troopers (who really made finals?) 80 Blue Devils vs 27th Lancers 87 Cadets of Bergen County vs Santa Clara Vanguard 89 Santa Clara Vanguard vs Phantom Regiment 91 Star of Indiana vs Cavaliers 96 Blue Devils vs Phantom Regiment 99 Blue Devils vs Santa Clara Vanguard 00 Cavaliers vs Cadets 01 Blue Devils vs Cadets (break the 2nd place tie) 03 Phantom Regiment vs Santa Clara Vanguard (.05 difference in score) Garry
  9. There have been a couple of posts wanting to see some 1st and 2nd place corps head to head from certain years, 89 Regiment and 89 SCV as an example. Wouldn't that make a nice night out in the theatre for drum corps? 75 Madison vs 75 SCV...87 Cadets vs 87 SCV...91 Star vs 91 Cavaliers. Time to start a new thread! Garry
  10. IN VK's tenor line in 1973, on the left Toy Soldier snare at Disneyland (back row, closest) At 10,000 feet in the eastern Sierra Nevada with my friend Bruce Co-founder and first director, SoCal Dream in 2003 http://www.socaldream.org/media/images/200...DSCF0025web.jpg With my new baby, Olivia in 2004 Renegades Honor Guard, St. Patrick's Parade 2005, carrying the Rene-baby at 4 months Garry PS Sorry about the size of the middle two pics!
  11. It's been quite a while since I've been to the Rose Bowl, and they've actually downsized the number of seats since then. (It used to have an "official" capacity of 102,000, but SRO crowds of 106K were not uncommon at Pac-10/Big-Televen showdowns on New Year's Day.) Last time there was for a UCLA game, and we sat right in the middle of the student section since we got our tickets from the UCLA quarterback. Sightlines are fine, but IMO the stadium is kinda flat for those in the nosebleed seats. Something more vertical, like The Murph in San Diego, would have been more drum corps friendly. Not to mention the cheap housing in Tijuana and Rosarito! Garry
  12. Maybe we could get a little Colts and drum corps together and name it Manning Bowl! :P I understand the concept of having finals in one place and the advantages. I also understand the idea of seeing different places and sights while touring (though it's more for the fans than the members...members go places but rarely see more than rehearsal sites and performance sites before loading up and heading out for the next show). As far a easier tour planning, it all depends on which route you take to finals. Do west coast corps hit the south or northeast before going to Indy? Do southern corps go out west first? There's a lot more to planning the tour than the finals location. I visited 42 states and 4 Canadian provinces in 4½ years marching and five years instructing. That's something you don't forget about the drum corps experience. I don't know if I'd be so excited about going to the same place for finals every year. Garry
  13. Hey, with enough sponsors from DCP we probably won't have to wear those "Chico's Bail Bonds" patches! B) Garry
  14. The only highway sign I remember in CT was crossing the state line from NY. It said, "Welcome to Connecticut. Dress nice!" :P Garry
  15. I know the difference! See you in two weeks, Larry. BTW, did you get the e-mail about red shirts for CNY? Garry Kingsmen Alumni Corps, tenor
  16. Your replies remind me of the Argument Sketch from Monty Python's Flying Circus. Simply gain-saying ("Yes, it does", or "No, it doesn't") is bad form in an argument or debate. I'd like to see some statistics to support your claim that attendance is up. It seems to me that with the demise of several shows (and corps that sponsored them) attendance might actually be down, in the long run. Garry
  17. Just because a few here want amps, woodwinds, the kitchen sink and a ham sandwich on the field, that in NO way translates into some sort of statement for drum corps in general. It just means a few here want to destroy drum corps as a separate entity from marching band. Garry
  18. Much lower in pitch, more resonant in character, and 65 pounds with the carrier. They were deeper than the contemporary Ludwigs so they had that power-tom sound. Think of Regiment's Power-tom quads from 81/82. Glad we had those carriers, though. Much easier to play without fighting straps. Garry
  19. Are you sure, Dan? Found this link on the Wisconsin State Fair website regarding "The Milwaukee Mile". looks like they have a full season of racing planned. http://www.milwaukeemile.com./ Garry
  20. Now... Then, on the left side. (How could I be so skinny and carry those things?!?) I guess this makes me a write-in candidate! Garry
  21. I'd love to see Pacific Alliance go full-on drum corps. Paging Mr. Nordeen...Mr Kevin Nordeen...DCA is calling. Garry
  22. I've had a very similar experience. A guy down the hall with some pretty loud R&B, and me trumping him with 79 Blue Devils. I also played that tape through a friend's system. If you are familiar with a piece of equipment called the Ampzilla, this is the guy who designed it, and the prototype was in his house. Now, the house sits on pedestals, and the speaker system was suspended on ladders. Some pretty free resonance going on. When I parked myself in front of this thing, the imaging was amazing. You could close your eyes and "see" the movement as individual players or sections "moved". Absolutely the closest thing to being at a live show I ever experienced. They were constantly having to move the furniture back and replace windows because of the power and free resonance of that thing. Garry
  23. Didn't look, but is this about the poker game? Garry
  24. Not sure if it was used as a coaster, but it is scanned from the original print I got in 1973. I might have to take it to a professional to be cleaned. BTW, those tenors were one-of-a-kind Rogers. Only four sets like that were made. They weighed 65 #'s, with the carrier. But the carrier was priceless. Notice how low the drums sit, and that there are no straps? We were so ahead of our time! We also had a bari- and bass- set, but we converted them to regular bass drums. In fact, a couple of the basses in that pic used to be tri-tom drums. B) Garry
