Really? Really? You are really missing out then. Have you never heard a drum corps hornline in person or a drumline in person or stood in just feet away from a color guard doing their thing? If you have, you certainly have lost that memory and feeling. If you haven't, then you ought to. You've either lost it or never had it. Sure you can see lots from a video, but it's not the same, will never be the same, would never generate the same strong opinions of those that are viewing it live. You can't garner the effect of the sound, intensity, emotion of drum corps in a recording. It's one thing that can't be bottled up in a recording (audio or A/V). Drum corps live. There is no substitute. There just isn't. Go to a drum corps show.

Aaaah, check again. You just confirmed your prejudices. The vibrating mass wasn't removed, it's shape/position and design has changed. You didn't really look at the drums did you? I looked at them close up. Also note that the vid is just a camp video. Even so, you can watch and listen to any recording of any corps and the tenors don't cut through when the entire corps plays. --sorry for going off topic.

Umm, your description of length of horn for a given pitch is confusing. For a given pitch, regardless of sop or trumpet, it has to be the same length of tubing. So a concert Bb on either horn will go thru the same length of tubing to attain the same frequency (pitch). Does that fit with what you're saying? I think you've got a mistake there. Regarding old G's being more conical, I don't think so; at least with my horns. I've got a bunch of circa '80's, '70's and '60's bugles as well as brand new bugles and there's no distinguishable difference. Maybe have to get the calipers out to really check. But all are cylindrical tubing up to the valves and then conical after the valves. Not sure about your thicker metal for G's. That seems odd, but don't have time to check that. And you're right on some of today's marching brass, some Kanstul trumpets seem to be much more conical with more bell flare than other trumpets.

(they just better record the entire thing for the cd's/dvd's and not just the judged part). Re: electronics: it's really a waste of money. Thus far I've not heard anything creative to justify it. It just makes the pit too loud. Re: 150... just a stepping stone. You need to have unlimited membership to adequately put saxes, clarinets, etc. on the field. Plus for any key horns you gotta have over 70 horns to be as loud as a 64 man g-line. Still I'll love seeing 80+ horns on the field with 20+ perc and 40+ guard. The bad: it will only be the richest corps. And some poorer corps will go for it and lose money and fold up trying to keep up with the new state of the art. That'll be sad.

Someday soon they'll open up the rules on the amplification thing and adjust the sheets so you can put all the members that play instruments in the pit. Since all instruments will be amp'd you won't need but 20 or so musicians. Then you'll have over 110 dancers/visual performers on the field, none of which will play any kind of instrument; they'll do just flag, rifle, dance drill, etc. Call it "Drum Corps Theater". Imagine the possibilities!

Yup, without the $$$$$$, you can't do this stuff. Not familiar with the Generals, but I didn't see you on the DCA site or on the corpsreps. Seems like you all haven't done DCA prelims yet. Surprising considering your strong words. Sorry, it seems you're arguing about something taken away from you that you actually never had. But I see. No one has mentioned this, least I hadn't seen it, you can always cut your size down to do mini-corps. Or team up with someone else to do DCA prelims given the new rules.

I like the new rules. As a fan, really small corps don't do it for me. Some may be awesome, like Future Corps was, but then even they don't put it on a football field. Their venue is small. Common sense. Renerule = publicity. 'nuff said there More $ to top ten = a touch smaller share point and a little less to non-top ten. Remember, the top ten are the ones that extended sharepoints to all. Ooo those evil top ten corps. So mean and exclusive! Logic: 11 man corps arrives in two cars and a van, does a show earns a sharepoint; 128 man corps arrives in 3 buses, 2 semis and a souvie truck, does a show earns exactly the same sharepoint. Hmmm. I think I da changed the rule too.

As someone mentioned in the other thread on this stuff, if you're really concerned about this contact corps directors or DCA directly. Ya done that? I'm bettin not.

I believe the folks running things aren't diabolical, evil people; nor are they idiots. Actually, they may be crazy because of the public lashing they get for any decision! On the corps size topic, someone posted somewhere (I think) or I heard it somewhere that at the meeting the member corps kept asking the very few Class A corps in attendance what their thoughts were. Apparently they didn't say a whole lot. Ya gotta attend and ya gotta speak up. After the fact may be too late. Just sayin'.

Ah, but you did. It's a good rule. Just because your "obvious" reasons are repeated over and over don't make it a bad rule. You easily forget where, by far, most of the money and most of the fans are in DCA. No, it's not the South or the West. No matter what you say, it doesn't make sense to have all these voters from all over the place. You make it worse when northern corps read your posts, because based on your mindset you'd have all these non-NE corps ready to take over and do drastic things like move all the shows and championships to places where there's no fans and no money, essentially elimanting the income that all the competing corps benefit from. Your view is just too narrow; you aren't looking at the big picture.

DCA corps don't get an automatic place in DCI shows; it's not that easy. I think Gulf coast or was it Bayou CIty had some interesting experiences in that regard. Something about standing in the tunnel to go perform and then being told to leave. Ask other DCA corps; I don't think it's that easy getting into DCI shows. Besides I don't htink it'd be that great only doing exhibitions with no competition most of the time. Not usually what most members join up for.

Wow, just go to finals and you're in! Somehow I don't think it's that easy. I'm thinking lots and lots of corps busted some hump over the years getting good enough for top 10. You sure like to wash away that accomplishment. No respect. Besides, who in the world would want to rehearse every other weekend all winter/spring long and every weekend in the summer and pay $300, $500 or $1000 in dues just to perform twice. That's absolutely silly. Perhaps, but maybe it would have been wiser to not do all that since MCL had all those holes in MCL's. Seems like member's welfare and morale sufferend just due to that. Even so, great job though. Now there are apparently new rules to which all corps have to work to achieve member status. Besides, all corps have seats at the table and voices at the meeting don't they? I think they said over 20 corps were represented at the meeting. You just don't have a vote unless you're one of the best! Plus no one took their vote away for this season for which they earned it, did they? Actually I think the corps that decides to stay home and never perform or compete is the biggest loser. Can't work your way up if you never perform and never compete. Actually I think you need to look at the entire picture. This rule actually encourages growth of DCA by having that one show requirement. It's a good rule. And someone says they made it really easy to get the one show requirement too. Plus, having only 10 voting members is fine. Those corps bust butt to make it there and to stay there. Arent they the the ones that created Class A and the regions and share money for all? You give no credit and no respect. Amazing.

Why? There wouldn't be much of a turnout of fans to watch. Not as many corps would or could attend so competition would be down. All that would equal less $$$$. Nah, I don't think the West/South/Midwest corps want that. Least not in the very near future.

You're 19 and a woodwind player that wants to march drum corps. What's with people today, you would rather change the entire activity to suit you than go thru the effort to adapt to the activity? Good grief! If you really want to march drum corps, learn a bugle and do it!! I would say thousands of woodwind players have done that very thing over the last 20, 30, 40 years. Such disrespect to them to demand that drum corps change. And what about all the woodwinds players in drumlines and color guards!! And as DM's!! Such disrespect to those talented folks and their love of corps. Last thing that solidifies this whole topic.... Picture this: clarinets to the box!! Or better yet, bass guitar amp pusher to the box!! Ugggh!!

Hmm, where would they perform? At the six DCA shows not in the northeast? That's a small circuit. But the distance between shows would still be big. FL to TX to MN, etc.

The new rule seems to encourage regionalization, hence nationalization. senior corps can't tour so the rule actualy makes sense.

If there are still college or high school instructors out there that don't like corps and in particular say you lose your chops by marching a corps all summer or you can't play on a G horn all summer and then switch back to Bb and keep up (that still gets me as one of the G to Bb arguments -B.S.).... just tell them about Al Chez of the Letterman Show (former Cadet) and Chris Martin principal trumpet for the Chicago Symphony (Spirit alum). There are others.

Each DCA corps has a unique identity. DCI corps have lost that abit. IMO Go entertainment!! Go DCA!!
