  1. Same work ethic, less time. I'd suggest not making such comments UNTIL you've seen a quality DCA corps rehearse. Then you can talk out of your mouth with your head on your shoulders rather than what the arrogant comment above implies.
  2. So much misunderstanding and arrogance. 1st, I don't see how "standing up for Hboyce" is commendable. He extrapolated the behavior of one person into the norms of an entire group. Being from Indiana, surely you understand stereotypes.............. 2nd, how old was this now-famous whizzer? I ask because from what I see year in and year out there are more 16-21 year olds in DCA than there are post-25ers. Even in my own ice age adventures in a competing DCA corps, at 25 I was the 3rd OLDEST member (in a full corps). My guess would be that "The Whiz" had some junior corps eligibility left and would have been a boor wherever he was. 3rd, I think you're far out with this mocking thing. Again from the ice age, I wouldn't have gotten very far mocking the junior corps of the day, because the person teaching me was also teaching top 5 DCI corps (Dennis DeLucia) It's no different today. I KNOW that DCA members don't stand around mocking the work of Key Poulan, Wayne Downey, Myron Rosander, Larry Kerchner..................... while they're being taught by them. I also don't think that these individuals, talented as they are, have a DCA persona and a DCI persona that they move between. I can buy the answers posted here by many: burned out; put off things for DCI that have to be dealt with now; No DCA corps close by. That's why most DCA corps don't build on recent DCI D1 age-outs. As one director told me "They've either just gotten their high school diploma or their AARP card.
  3. But Mike, All of us who've been around for any time at all know that every once in awhile it's necessary and justified to give a kid a one-way ticket home from the DCI tour. Yet we'd be all over anyone who tried to stereotype that as indicative of DCI as a whole. My own mother had some qualms about senior corps from things she heard and saw when my dad was in Reilly. Then she got really nervous about junior corps being around me and other hormonal teens in the '60s. I think she's over it now.
  4. I wonder how it would sound if you inserted any given race/religion/culture/gender for the phrase "senior corps member" in the above statements.
  5. John Flowers is back with the Yankee-Rebels, I'd suggest you contact the corps about getting with John or having him recommend one of his assistants (They practice at a VFW post in the Hamilton neighborhood).
  6. Sorry to damage a popular myth, but "Sherwood's Forrest" was a popular big band hit by Bobby Sherwood. But for inquiring minds, if the corps had exploded as we hoped rather than imploded in 1979, we had planned on doing a re-make in 1980.
  7. Guess you heard that from the same people who say that DCI members are a bunch of spoiled rich kids who don't know what town they're in because they spent all night doing coke on the bus. - stereotypes suck -
  8. It's interesting that you are concerned about hostility for your DCI involvement when many people associated with DCA corps have to deal with similar stereotypes. When the gentleman from the Kilties passed away on the field in Scranton, my thoughts ran to a conversation I had with a volunteer from a DCI D1 corps in Allentown. He had never marched, and seemed a very pleasant person. Our conversation turned to where his corps was headed next, which happened to involve arrangements that had been facilitated by a DCA corps. He started in on the typical DCA-bashing stereotypes (drinking, simple sloppy performances, etc.....). I tried to tell him that from my personal experiences, those stereotypes were no more true than if applied to DCI corps. His reply was that his exposure was limited, but as a Midwesterner he was sure it was true of the Kilties. I found those comments sad at the time, mainly because they were developed based on myths that are spread by SOME people associated with DCI corps. I also saw that attitude reflected in the way his corps showed little respect for the efforts that the young DCA corps expended on his corps' behalf. I guess life is a two-way street, but like I said, that conversation ran through my mind in those terrible minutes following the falling of one of our own.
  9. I didn't see the Royal Airs, whose uniforms were sold to the New Orleans Stardusters when RA folded. Also didn't see Southwind.
  10. Madison bought the REAL cadet uniforms (West Point) in '67.
  11. First, after she emerged half-way through the show, she became the show. At first I thought it would become common-place and boring but I found the anticipation of her "emergence" grew each time I saw the show. My 9-year old daughter who participates in every form of dance imaginable just about knew her routine by finals. She screamed like she was seeing a rock star when "Carmen" came on the field. She's still mad at me for not getting her autograph. I personally liked the fact that her only role was to dance, and found her routine varied between the athletic and the dramatic. In the final analysis, I just really LIKED it!
  12. Maryland was a border state with considerable secessionist sentiments, much like Kentucky and Missouri. One needn't look any farther than the Yankee-Rebels on-field shows and off-field issues to bring things close to home. History major & Maryland resident.
  13. As an old Florida governor once said: "In Florida, the North is like the South; the South is like the North; and the Middle is like the Middle". So to me Orlando is the biggest Midwestern city outside the Midwest (sorry Phoenix).
  14. Yep, I'll be tuning in to the Devil Rays in the World Series. Seriously, that's one of the things I like about DCA. Much more mobility. Here's another thing to consider. Madison was out of finals a couple of years ago. How long did it take them to get back into contention relative to other 13th place corps? How long do you think it will take SCV to get back in the top 4 relative to Glassmen or Crossmen, who've also been 8th.
  15. I thought there was no difference too, until 2004. I heard Southwind (still G that year) go on in front of Glassmen (obviously Bb) a couple of times and there was a marked difference beyond what could be expected from the slightly more mature G'men players. And I'm a drummer! Imagine what people with real ears hear.

  17. The alumni have a website. Sorry I don't have the address.
  18. I agree with those who say the real issue is amplification. The Sunrisers did drumspeak as early as 1982 and people loved it (although it was only one measure), and I personally loved 2000 BAC and Bushwacker's Russian Anthem this year.
  19. Someone has to come to Carmen's defense. Her situation was unique and her impact significant.
  20. I don't know how much "bringing back" there is to do. If you accept that last year was an abberation, the new staff are the folks who will fix what wasn't broken. I'm waiting to see who will emerge as the program co-ordinator, because that's where the wheels came off last year IMHO. I'm very glad to see that Key Poulan will continue as brass arranger, but as with so many of the great ones, frankly his programming ideas didn't do justice to his own arrangements. Hopefully, someone else will be making those calls and all will be well again.
  21. I find it interesting that in the link to the Casper Star article, there was mention of the Troopers expecting some form of punitive action at the beginning of last season that didn't materialize. This leaves me to question the judgement of both DCI and the Troopers. The period "5 years" has been bandied about in this thread. Regardless of the exact timeframe, both sides have acknowledged that this has been an issue for some time. So........ Why did DCI sit on this violation for a period of time? Would they have extended the same courtesy to a corps with less history? What straw broke the camel's back? Why did the Troopers BoD sit on this issue (whatever it might be)? Were they assuming it would go away or were they working quietly to fix the problem? I think we're not getting any real information because there seems to be due dilligence lacking in both Addison and Casper.
  22. I know it's before DCI, but the Skokie Indians were an institution in veteran's competition. They also provided much of the instructional talent in the early years of the area's junior corps. There was a rumor that the great rudimental drummer Frank Aresenault of Skokie and Cavalier fame actually passed away in Cavalier hall (we all know about folk legends, but it's fun to tell). Also, check out the pedigrees of DCI luminaries like Dave Richards, Terry Thirion (Blue Stars) and his brother John (Des Plaines Vanguard) and they all have senior corps roots.
  23. Pat, I think I created a misunderstanding by trying to be coy in avoiding names. The comment was not directed at you. You have done a great job of posting what information your organization has authorized, and you and your counterparts throughout the activity perform an invaluable service. With a thread this cumbersome, it's hard to keep track even if you check in frequently. I responded to a comment by MikeD (whom I have considerable respect for) which in-turn quoted one of your creative staff members who, I assume, is or was in a paid position with the corps. That was what prompted my last paragraph. My apologies. Wayne
