  1. I'd suspect you're correct. I believe Southwind had to re-earn their member status during the 05 season due to the re-organization from MDBCA. By the time the website gets fixed, they will be members again.
  2. Not all that far fetched. When I was with Belleville in the late '70s it was seriously discussed. And that was only a few years after making DCI finals. The circumstances were against it back then as there was no consistent senior (OK, all age) presence in the Midwest and weekend trips to the East Coast weren't doable. There was also the "youth organization" issue, although I bet that would have been trumped by "family organization", and a BoD that was less than enthusiastic. In today's environment, though, it might just work.
  3. Nick and Company, I wanted to publicly thank you for helping find reasonable housing for Southwind on short notice after the Hershey cancellation fiasco. As far as I know, the kids had a great free day in NYC. It will be 30 years next year since I had a chance to spend a too-short time with the corps, but time and again our paths cross. It's still the same classy organization it's been for 50+ years. I hope the kids over on the other circuit are learning the meaning of long-term friendship that characterizes most of the DCA community.
  4. The Canadian Commanders, Les Metropolitains, Marching Ambassadors........... BTW, I've really liked the Grenadiers and wish them well in Scranton. I just wish they could hold both a nucleus and an identity for a few years.
  5. Just curious, where was Archie? They were the other founding member, although they had a rough year in '65.
  6. I've ignored this thread, but read it out of boredom. I'm truly stunned! Is it a generational thing? Has this been slowly evolving? I know that people have come to expect tips for lousy service as well as good, and that others can't understand why customers get upset over ineptitude, but have we really gotten to the point where a performer is ENTITLED to a standing ovation, regardless of the audience's reaction to their performance? Since when did drum corps start insulating young people (if that's what they are in the top 12) from life rather than preparing them for it? To me, it's far more painful to be in 13th place than to be booed in finals. A standing ovation for making finals? The top 12 "worked hard", as if the 13-24th place D1 corps and the D2/3 and DCA corps didn't? If you want to attack people for showing honest emotions, check the hot dog stand. Or their home entertainment units tuned to a video during finals. THAT's how to show disregard (as a side note, I didn't boo any corps. But, I went to the concession stands after Phantom each night). We boo athletes. We boo artists. Critics do much worse than boo. I'm sorry that the DCP generation feels entitled to incessant praise, or for that matter wants insincere applause. OK, you're all beautiful. You all did GREAT jobs. No one is fat. Anorexia is becoming. You are the best musicians on the face of the earth. Feel better? Where was the DCP/DCI mentality when Stalin was expressing his opinion of Shostakovich's work by trying to have him killed. Now that's a BOO!
  7. Bump. How about pinning this for a respectful length of time?
  8. Slightly off topic, but wasn't 1965 the year you opened with "Luck Be A Lady"? Spirit had me humming your old opener all year. (and you guys were GREAT that year).
  9. The "Big Owe"'s roof was permanently closed about 10 years ago (the kevlar kept ripping when being raised or lowered). I was there for one of the last Expos games last year and it's a race between the final payment and condemnation. Skydome would work in its CFL configuration.
  10. Which would be great if DCI were in February. The last few years in "cooler" climates have proven yet again that Madison, Denver, and Boston can be hot and stormy in late Summer. What's needed is a mid-continent dome: Toronto Skydome (in its football configuration, this isn't DCA) Minneapolis Metrodome St. Louis ________ (TWA) Dome New Orleans Superdome.
  11. Too far South to remember: Miami Vanguards Miami Crusaders North Miami Grenadiers Carol City Cavaliers Miami Silhouettes Hialeah Flamingos N. Miami Vikings Miami Rebels Miami Goldcoasters Orlando Falcons Melbourne Hurricanes Devil Dawgs Pensacola Diamonds Cape Coral Buccaneers
  12. Spanning the decades: Archer-Epler's "We Are The Musketeers" Sunriser's unique "wordless" Battle Hymn OK, I'm biased. I've sung both of the above. For today's DCI corps: Glassmen's "Madre"
  13. Since it's show-guessing time again, thought some might be interested in the August feature on Sirius' opera station: Classical Voices. It's Wagner's Flying Dutchman, which means that they're playing a portion of the opera at least every hour. Note to Kentucky: Notice how important "a South Wind" is to the plot
  14. Southwind - Time to get an identity both musically and visually. Now that the corps has made it through a season on its own, based in Lexington, they can turn their attention to moving up rather than just survival. No need to push some Southwestern band show through the computer this year. "Yellow Team" worked for them, black & white team with funny shakos got them through this year, but has no future. Go back to yellow, or change to a recognizable color and stay with it. Musically, the early Lex years were popular classics. I'd see that working again. My choice: check out how significant "a South Wind" is to the plot of Wagner's "Flying Dutchman".
  15. I can't tell you how great it felt to be involved with the booster program for the 1st time in this very special year. I know you'll be back next year, and God willing, I'll be honored to be there with you.
  16. Food prices are high at all of these venues and this one at least has name brand outlets rather than the Aramarks, etc. By what I've been reading here, the parking rates are "special" for DCI. But then when a "sellout" involves filling half the stadium, what do you expect? I like it too, but a domed stadium would certainly feel as good tonight as, say in St. Louis in January.
  17. I totally agree (downtown Boston is a scorcher and I'm tired of stadium food). Are the Cavaliers going on in position or as defending champion? If they're on in 2nd place that might explain the break timing (or Cadets have shortened their show to 5 minutes )
  18. The vote was "no" to a poll phrased like a bannana republic ballot. How about trying: Yes, I want yet another corps with really dark colors and black shoes to look really small on the field. No, I like the contemporary version of a classic look.
  19. What an utterly stupid comment. He has been judging DCI and WGI forever and has written some of the finest shows to be seen in finals.
  20. Good information. Wrong question. The question was about the original soloist (I don't recall it being a trio until much later) in Flamenco by the competing corps.
  21. Hayes was in Miami in '61 so I know it wasn't him then. I think the 1st year of Flamenco was '60 and Bill could have possibly done the solo that year. Or may it was Angelica.
  22. This is a "can't win for loosing" situation. The DCP crowd was all over Scouts for the fade out ending (even though the scores were better). 3 loud endings later, you're still not satisfied. The end of Carmen is about DEATH. That's why the down ending worked for the show's continuity. It works with Bizet, but probably not with the Richard Nixon High band ending.
