  8. Thank you for all the kind words! As always Southwind will go on the field to entertain the crowd and to give our members the best possible drum corps experience. We will see you all this summer!
  9. Mike Loeffelholz is the correct spelling. Great drill design and a stand up guy.
  10. Jeff, I feel shame. You are completely correct, it is more cylindrical than a trumpet, I just wrote it down backwards. Thanks for the correction!
  11. There are a lot of wonderful points that have been discussed on this thread. First, I think that for a lot of corps the financial reasons were paramount in their minds. It wasn't fiscally responsible to purchase another set of G horns. Having marched only G in DCA and DCI I do know what it is like to manage a G bugle. The sound is open, and raw and the sops do pop in the upper register. But now that I instruct a junior Bb line I can really see and hear improvements. Second, Here is my suggestion for a horn line.... Trumpets/Sops in G Mello is F Bari/Euph in Bb Tuba/Contra in Bb A quick story.... I was on the road last summer and as I was walking down the stands after our performance I saw a middle aged gentleman sitting down, furrowing his brow and not clapping like the 2000 others around him screaming their heads off. I was genuinely interested in why he was not pleased. I stopped and politely introduced myself as a brass instructor for Southwind and asked what he thought of our show. He said "It is trash" I took the bait and asked why. He told me that because the corps was playing Bb horns he refused to clap or applaud because he believed that you could only appreciate drum corps in G. I said I was very sorry and I told him to enjoy the rest of the show. I'm sure he never clapped, because nobody was on G horns that night... My only beef with this argument is that occasionally we take it too far. If you are not a supporter of Bb that is your opinion, but please don't take it out on members of any corps. 1. it is not their decision which key they are in 2. they work hard to entertain and perform for you I hope I was able to shed a little bit of insight into this discussion. I love drum corps, period. And I am sure that before I die, there will be many more changes that I may or may not agree with. But the one thing that connects all brethren of drum corps is the common bond of hard work, long days, sweaty nights and the memories of a lifetime. No Bb, G, Amps, 3 Dimensional Drill, Flying Color Guard or whatever the drum corps path has in store of us will ever take that experience away.
  12. Here are my thoguhts... Age is a huge key. Cognitively, 15 year old members have a tougher time attaining what 21 year old members can in most situations. I also think staff in some respects make a difference, however I do know a BUNCH of amazing instructors teaching 12th and down that could easily teach any top 5 corps. I have always joked around with friends about this but I think that for all of June and half of July, each corps should perform in Jeans and a Polo shirt. They would only be called corps A, B, C... and each night it would change. Nobody would know who they are until mid July, after San Antonio. I completely believe that you would see things you never thought possible. I realize that this could never happen but it is an interesting idea.
  13. Don, I was looking at the Bluecoats site and I saw "Donny Allen" Brass instructor! Is there something you are not telling us?
  14. Who is going to break into top 12 this year?? I put all Division I corps to be fair
  15. You aren't playing Caravan? Because I could have SWORE I heard a caravan riff in there....maybe Tunisia??? Could I be confused??? Please advise.
  16. Here are my thoughts on the LI show I missed Sun unfortunately, but it is great to see them back on the field and doing well! Sky- Sky is playing one of my favorite tunes, Caravan. I thought that Sky did a nice job for being early in the season. Their drumline is the strongest section of the corps right now. The hornline has some work to do learning notes and putting it with the feet. They arced up and played their closer without drill, I'm sure that will be complete very soon. Nice job sky! Hurcs - Hurcs have some nice moments in their show. Right now their colorguard is leading this corps in performance. There were a lot of feet issues tonight. Probably first show jitters. Hurcs also had an incomplete show tonight. Stamina is an issue but I'm sure they will gain strength and confidence in the coming weeks. It also looks like they wrote for more than they have in terms of numbers so if you are looking for a place to march, Hurcs have a really nice and crowd appealing show check them out! Bush - A lot of preseason hype on Bush so I was interested in seeing them for the first time this year. They were clearly the most confident and prepared corps of the evening. I thought they did a decent job at their first show of the year. Some stamina issues toward the end of their show. In typical Bush style they are moving a lot. Many issues tonight with understanding multiple visual responsibilities. The hornline has a decent sound but has a tendency to push out and lose balance and tone quality. My complaint about the show is that it seems to have many false endings. The flow of the entire show is not as smooth as I would have liked to see. I hope the design staff takes a look at the flow and works it out. Nice job! Cru - As a Cru alum it was fantastic to see them back on the field again. They are playing Bb horns this year and they sound fantastic. They have some strong players in each section and that is helping to hold things together for Cru. The pit and battery is definitely the weak section of the corps right now but knowing the perc staff, they will continue to work and train the members and turn that around. The show is pleasing to listen to, and the guard does a really nice job of creating a fun mood on the field. My only complaint about the show and performance from Cru is the fact that the former corps song "Send in the Clowns" was nowhere to be heard. I hope you bring it back Cru1 It means something to us alums! After the show - Got a chance to see some old friends and reunite with some former Cru members. It was a fantastic evening of drum corps. All the corps did a great job and I hope that nobody takes offense to my comments. I love drum corps and I hope I was able to give some insight into my thoughts on the evening!
  17. Oliver! That may happen this summer! That would be a whole lot of fun. I would love to meet your family and see your corps! Be well buddy! -Aaron
