Utterly Disgusted!

Recommended Posts

Don't bash the opponent, support your team!

Do unto others as you would have done unto you.

If you have nothing nice to say, don't say it at all.

Things were way more simpler when we were 8 yrs old.

Ok so I was at Allentown (both nights) and I saw the most disgusting shirts. These horrible shirts say "This I believe Shut up and Play". I think that this shirt shows a lack of respect for the activity. But seriously I think the shirt is the opposite of what Drum Corps is about... so I really think people should boycott that shirt.... By which I mean please DO NOT wear them!!!!!!!!!! Thanks

Wrong! People have a Constitutional right to voice their displeasure over any issue. This includes annoying narrations! And by the way, I'll take a gross of those T-shirts.

Go ahead and wear your shirt. No one said you had to be classy and support everyone. That's definitely not the case on this website so I don't really understand what you "hate"......

It's the general attitude of the activity as a whole. It started when I was in high school marching band, the directors beating into our heads that we had to be "classy" and all that. No talking bad about other groups, no posting on BOA forums, stuff like that. It's a little better in drum corps because it's a more adult environment, but in the end it's still the same.

Example. I can get on a sports forum and talk crap about the Denver Broncos all I want and no one would care. I'd get some heated responses from other fans and it would be a good "debate". If I get on DCP and start talking crap about the Santa Clara Vanguard, I'm some sort of huge bad guy. And I don't mean expressing my unhappiness with show design or something. I mean straight-up talking trash the way people do in anything else. But not the marching activity. We have to be classy.

It's lame.

Be careful about playing the 1st Amendment "freedom of speech" card here. The 1st Amendment states that the GOVERNMENT cannot restrict your freedom of speech. DCI is a private organization and they can place whatever restrctions on attire they want for their events. If they want to impose a dress code, they can, although it would likely be bad for business, which is probably why they don't. But they COULD. Some restaurants have dress codes. The MLB examples above have nothing to do with slander -- MLB is trying to create an environment where those kind of shirts are not welcome. They are free to restrict whatever clothing they like. They feel that attendance will not suffer with the removal of the above examples, but they are FREE to draw that line wherever they want -- and must live with the possible market forces reaction -- i.e., lower ticket sales. DCI, too.

I was waiting for the Politically correct comment to show up. Mad Props yo.

P.s. Stay Classy Drum Corps Planet

Stay elitist without contributing anything to the conversation besides drive-by trolling, yo. :)

In case you didn't notice the "Stay Classy" comment is extreme sarcasm and did you look at my user name.

Sorry about that.

My sarcasm meter is broken thanks to work today. :)

My apologies...seriously. I should have caught that. I'll go edit my post.

Why does every topic relating to common, normal, societal MANNERS and RESPECT have to balloon into a legal eagle 1st amendment constitutional rights case. For anyone out there that truly feels the need to yell negative crap about ANY corps... YOU ARE NOT A FAN, please LEAVE. DON'T COME BACK.

Wow, that is the antithesis of what fandom is in every other endeavor I can think of. Fans have passionate opinions. If two people are arguing about whether "Citizen Kane" is or isn't the best film of all time, no one accuses them of not being film fans. Their passion and their strong opinions makes them film fans. The Yankee fans who hate the Red Sox and the Red Sox fans who hate the Yankees are never accussed of not being baseball fans. Their passion makes them fans.

Yelling negativities at a corps may (or may not) violate the accepted manners of the activity. But, you can't accuse them of not being fans.

Excepted manners of activity varies greatly. Fans yelling trashtalk is an accepted part of sports like baseball and football. In football, the crowd can become part of the game by yelling so loud they interupt the other team's concentration. At tennis and golf matches, silence is expected. Though, back in the 70's when Billie Jean King tried to start pro team tennis, she wanted the crowd to be more passionate and yell during matches the way they do in other sports.

Drum corps isn't golf. We do expect the crowd to show their passion. My memories as a performer are that the worst crowd is a silent one.

(Note: golf crowds are allowed to react after the putts sink, just not while the players are playing)

I'm not sure why only positive passion ('Go Bubby!!') is accepted and negative passion is not. I can see it if you are talking about yelling "you suck" to small, young corps of kids just starting out in the activity and are going to come in last. It's something that would discourage them from continuing in the activity. I can't think of anyone who would do that. But, the top corps are battle-hardened. They are superstars in this activity, the way that JLo or Brangelina are in their milieus. "Shut up and Play" isn't the same as "you suck". It's a statement about the content of the show. It's not a statement about the quality of the performers. If anything, it's saying "I want to hear these talented performers and not that distracting talking". Is that negative? I'm not so sure.

Edited to add: The rule changes that bring in controversial "innovations" happen behind closed doors at DCI. When and it what official forum do the fans get to offer their opinion where they know officials from DCI can hear them? Not too many places. Again, this doesn't make them "non-fans", it makes them "fans".

But the whole point is they don't really care about what audience members choose to say in regards to the show they are performing. Sure it would be nice to receive a positive reaction to the show, but they are more focused on performing to the best of their ability.

Which is fine. If someone chooses to go on the field with the attitude that "Hey, we realize you might hate this, but these other 134 people and I think it's great, so here it is", I can totally respect that. But it flies in the face of what others have posted about needing to "support the kids".

My point was simply that if the members choose to "believe" in this show -- and obviously they do or they wouldn't be there --then they also should be mature enough to recognize that it isn't going to be everyone's thing and know they'll need to deal with that accordingly.
