Playing With One Hand

Recommended Posts

SCV did it in 1989.

Actually the SCV hornline turned around to face front for the hit in "Wishing you were somehow here again" in 88 and put one arm down. In 89 we did not. My guess is because in 89 that moment was about the guard (playing the Christine character) - and if we'd done that, it might have taken the focus off the guard.

In 90, we had a hit in our ballad (I believe it was called "Intermezzo") where we put one arm down.

Similar to the one hand thing is the Cadets 2000 thing where they played the horn of the player next to them.

Im surprised that isn't done more. Drummers play on each others drums all the time, and do single handed split parts a lot too.

I'm not...have you ever tried playing something while someone else is fingering, it is extremely difficult...much more difficult than just reaching over and hitting someone elses snare..

I understand it's been done for a long time, but with three or more corps using it as an effect, do you think it's gonna catch on even more?

Its like saying that using wings in a show will become a new fad...

I noticed that both the Bluecoats and The Cavaliers have sections of their shows where they play with one hand and are posing.

Is this the newest fad for visual effects?

I believe another corps does it too, but I'm drawing a blank, anyone know? SCV maybe?

Have you seen the new Aflac commercial? The one with the goat?

New fad? "Na-aa-ah," says the goat. PR 94 did that when the hornline knelt facing backfield during Clair de Lune. Left hands went to the ground behing the brass players and they held the horns up and played with the right.

Innovation! WOO-HOO!! (another Homer Simpson moment)

Gotta disagree. I've tried it and it was much easier than I expected! B)

Coats bari soloist in 90 with an ascending lip trill.

It looks cool, but it's nothing that hasn't been done to be sure (or hard). Your left hand is only used to support the instrument and adjust the slides.

Bluecoats did it last year, at least their contras did. I didn't really understand why, though.

Ahhhh... gotcha.

That was indeed the moment I was thinking of, just the wrong year/version.
