Booing and the Cadets

Recommended Posts

No offense,

But if you can't stand the heat get the #### out of the kitchen. Seriously. If you didn't know that there was a good chance that people wouldn't like your show when you signed up to march cadets because your director has gone against what many people believe drum corps is you're pretty much a moron.

I don't care how much hardwork and effort goes into a show. We're allowed to cheer, we're also allowed to boo. If these kids don't like it they'll march somewhere else. The fans are allowed to express their opinion of a style, a director, or a corps. If the kids aren't tough enough to withstand a little booing they shouldn't be marching corps in the first place. WE baby the #### out of our kids these days. A little negative feedback isn't going to make or break anyone's life.

This conduct isn't despicable, it's simply an expression of how many fans feel about the current direction the cadets are taking. if they don't like it, well, there's always BLAST.

PEACE

We're allowed to do a lot of things in life. It does not mean we should do them.

Further,

I feel that yes, people put in hardwork. Booing isn't a reflection of how people feel about that hardwork. It isn't a reflection of how people feel about these kids.

It is a reflection of how people feel about HOPKINS. Granted, it's somewhat akin to the difference between "boo burns" and "boo urns", but hey, you cna't win em all right.

I'm sorry, but there is an awful lot of whining in this thread.

"Awwww the kids are going to feel bad.....awwww they work so hard".

How do you think the kids in Div III feel when they play a stadium filled with crickets at their finals? How do you think the bottom corps feel when they play a show and no one applauds?

That's life. Get used to it.

Then talk to Hopkins. . .deal with Hopkins. That is how mature adults handle conflicts with a person.

Well, I agree in general that we should be more respectful, but there is a huge difference in booing while a 17 year old kid who gave up their summer to march is on the field and saying something negative about the President. That comparison really does not work.

That's because you're still under the impression that these "kids" are "giving up their sumer".

It's really no different than, say, playing college sports. First off, they aren't "kids". When the average age in DCI is... I'll just guess... 19? 20? That's still "young" but I believe they, we, deserve more credit than we're given. They aren't first graders who, at the crack of a ruler, will go into a sobbing fit. No I think young adults, especially those in drum corps, have the mental grit and maturity to turn that negative into a resounding and overwhelming positive. Oh, we came out and dropped a place? Didn't play loud enough? Botched a solo? I think we'll surge back to where we belong, blow your face off, and rip a lick like you've never seen.

Second, no one is "giving up" their summer. This is what they want to do. You make it sound like a punishment. I acquaint drum corps to the first years of a professional athletes career... though there are exceptions AND they get paid and we pay, everyone has that stint in the pros where it's not about the money... it's about the passion. Same with us. Passion is what keeps everyone going... and if that's punishment, well... "Chain me to the wall."

Point? I don't think we need to baby the kids. They're performers. We aren't there to give them a feel good story. We're there to see what they've got. Should we applaud everyone? Yes. Should we applaud everyone the SAME? No. That's doing a disservice to the members. They don't want to be given accolade because you SHOULD. They want to be given accolade because they EARNED IT, and not just because of the blood, sweat, and tears, not just because they paid, not just because they worked their ##### off all summer... they want to know that their product really DOES appeal to you. If you don't like it, applaud less. But for the Love of God don't lie to those "kids".

Haha....so are you saying that these problems are ok, and that we shouldnt try to fix them?? I know that I clapped for 23 different corps on thursday night, but perhaps i was just wasting my time....i should have just showed up for the top 7, and only clapped for the corps i liked even then. Saying something is a part of life is really less than a step away from being the person causing the problem. If you arent part of the solution....

Other corps don't act like cadets, other corps don't get booed and heckled.

In fact NO other corps acts like cadets, and NO other corps gets booed and heckled.

Hmmm.... co-incidence ? not in this universe.

You can't tell that to any cadets fan or alumni with their egos and elitist attitudes. They will get all butthurt and cry.
