A Drum Corps Contest this weekend

How many of you realize there will be a drum corps contest this coming Saturday - in the USA?

Its the Interservice Academy Drum & Bugle corps contest where the Air Force Academy, the Coast Guard Academy and the Naval Academy corps meet to compete against each other. It's at the Naval Academy, September 29 Annapolis, MD.

For those of you who are already feeling the effects of "competative withdrawl", maybe this would be an opportunity to not only see a drum corps show but support these young people in their military careers. They have not only volunteered to perform with their respective corps but have volunteered to serve our country  and lay their lives on the line so we can all live in a free country.

9 AM Saturday, at Rip Miller Field on the grounds of the Naval Academy. It is the final competition of the 2007 drum corps season in North America. Please come out and join us... and support these academy corps!

Top Cat, you are absolutely right...... the performers in these three corps somehow manage to work drum corps into their schedules, on top of all of their academic and military-training requirements at each academy. Hats off to them all for their efforts!!!!

Why no Marines D&B Corps? Is it an academy thing only?

I recall hearing a record of the Air Force Corps from the early 60,s, with Tommy Martin playing I think, and they were on fire.

Recently, I saw the Naval Academy corps coming down the street in a parade, and they looked real sharp. Talk about marching........

Military corps use no amps, most of them use no pit, or like the Marines use a very small 2 or 3 person pit, and the Marine drum & bugle corps don't compete, they wern't formed for that purpose. There pupose is to supply entertainment for troops. and civilians when possable, thats it.

Slightly Off Topic:

One of my daughters who never marched in drum corps as a civilian, but played trombone in her H.S. band, went to the Naval Academy.

As a "plebe" (their lingo for "freshman") she saw an announcement about the D&B corps, decided that just HAD to be a way of getting out of some duty. The life of an academy plebe is not a pleasant one, and they are extremely busy.

To shorten this a bit, she quickly discovered after successfully auditioning, that the D&B Corps was VERY demanding duty all by itself, and furthermore that it is in fact done completely in addition to all other duties of a midshipman. Oh, it is NOT considered acceptable for any midshipman to discontinue ANY duty for which they have volunteered.

That very year, Navy played the University of Toledo in football, so we were blessed by a visit here in Toledo by the D&B Corps, and this accorded us some precious time with her.

I noted with some amusement that D&B Corps was not a part of her career at Annapolis in subsequent years. She is now Ensign Emily Allert, and she and her husband both fly helicopters for the Navy stationed in San Diego.

So if you are privileged to see one of the Service Academy Drum Corps, and they're all very good, bear in mind the sacrifice that those kids are making to participate - it's enormous.

And their performance schedule, including travel time, is a lot more involved than any HS or college band. Back in the late 70s/early 80s both Naval and Air Force Academys would perform at the Harrisburg Serenade in Brass concert show. One year Colorado Springs was having bad wind conditions and not sure if the corps could make the show. They made it, but the entire corps sat in cargo(?) planes for a couple of hours until the wind died down "just long enough".

Yeah, Colorado to Pennsylvania to do a standstill concert...

Wow ... this definitely brings back memories ... it was not uncommon in the 60's for Circuit Championships (Greater NY, Penn-Jersey, etc.) to occur in late Sept and even early Oct ... I can vividly remember on GNYC Championsihp being held IN THE SNOW on Pandall's Island, NY!!! ... YEOW! ... even in the early years of DCA, there were shows held after the Championship, which wasn't necessarily on Labor Day weekend ...

Remember 64, the Penn Jersey Championships were on September 6th and the Livingston Hilltoppers competition was Sept. 20th. Of course you do. Plus, we started in mid to late May.

That's long in the tooth I'd say.

Well that's not really right. The Contest is for the Academy's. The Army at West Point does not have a Drum and Bugle Corps. So that's why they are not there. The Marine Corps Drum and Bugle Corps is not a Service Acadeny Drum and Bugle Corps. ((Then too the Naval Academy INCLUDES Marines). Although I think had they been allowed to compete they would have WON Many of (if not most) the titles. ( can you say: Col. Truman Crawford)

Maybe one day they will have a more Open type contest and allow other Military Base units and the Marines in. But for right now it (the contest) is tied to the Navy - Air Force Football game. When held in Colorado pretty much only Navy and Air Force compete. When held in Maryland. Coast Guard Academy and Merchant Marine Academy get added.
