I was actually thinking of an older show. I've just seen a clip of it where they were in a big company front and the hornline was in another front behind them (I believe that's right anyway). It was during a "ballad closer" I think.

In 1985 there was an expanded cymbal line playing red cymbals. They were used as a visual design element and were, at times, coordinated with the guard. Those were all percussionists.

In 1986, a similar idea was used, but they were guard members playing cymbals.
