Will
I, too, found Northview very engaging this year. Though I am often pleased with their shows, this one is especially wonderful. A slightly different style for them and they are pulling it off flawlessly. Top 8 anyone?? I think so.
Jak
True True. . . .they got clobbered by everyone like a week before WGI at the Nashville Regional, I think Centerville and Winston Churchill put a 10 POINT spread on them at that regional. . .and BAM the next week or maybe 2?? (not sure) they came back and beat BOTH groups at WGI and finished 7th? (I think that's where they ended up). . . .anyway. . .they were slotted literally at the bottom and performed quite early in prelims.. . so it goes to show, anything can happen! At the Atlanta Regional in February that year, Kennesaw just barely (by.1) acheived the minimum score to get into finals. I couldn't believe how far they came that season; I believe they grew 30 points from the first Regional to WGI. That staff knows how to work the last minute magic, though. Ugh, Churchill peaked way to early that year. Their drop in the rankings is a good solid argument against slotting in SW.
Miguel
The problem though is Cheshire's show has topped out. . .I foresee them getting passed by Shen and a few others. . .don't expect to see them higher than 6th. My guess is they'll be in the 6-10 range. Mark my words on this one! It's a good show and it will connect with the audience, but based on how the sheets are written, they'll be in that 6-10 range. . . Topped out??? Mark my words??? How the sheets are written??? Your completely out of touch, or just envious. One of the parents said that Cheshire had only 3 Seniors this year. With their momentum and staff, they will definetly be fighting for a medal. Mark my words!

I must admit, I wonder what the outcome of their placements will be next year. There's no doubt in my mind that they'll be up for medal contention next year, but it will be interesting adding James Logan back into the mix, Avon continuing their quest for the elusive gold medal that always seems a few tenths away from their grip, and Flanagan, defending champs. James Logan and Avon are both very consistent programs that have stood the test of time for years, but I worry that Flanagan will fall short. I hear they've just graduated an enormous class with the conclusion of the 2008 season. Although...it is just the end of this year. It's a bit too early to make predictions for next year's championships...
pmcolorguard
Guards like Avon and Flanagan graduate big classes every year, this has nothing to do with being at the top.....Show design and intelectual appeal are what keep you up there... I completely agree with you except for one thing. last time I checked... somewhere around 18 of Flanagans members are graduating!!! Of course, their JV team is Tossing Fives (or so I've heard.) I'm sure They'll be fine. Edited April 17, 2008 by amfgx
GLG_Guard
Guards like Avon and Flanagan graduate big classes every year, this has nothing to do with being at the top.....Show design and intelectual appeal are what keep you up there... I agree with you that show design and intellectual appeal wins over the judges and audience inevtiably, but that's only at the beginning of the season when the judges can barely determine what the performers themselves are doing; when the performers are just beginning to get comfortable on the floor. At the end of the season, it's the performers that actually play a huge role... As far as my knowledge goes, Flanagan's only been a Scholastic World Guard for 5 years total, each year climbing the rankings higher and higher. Kudos, but I have to say, their JV kids are going to have one heckuva time catching up to where their alumni left off. HOWEVER, I am a firm believer in that if you set your mind to something, believe it will happen, it will land in your lap. I'm sure those girls (and boys) are more than determined to defend their championship title in the 2009 winter season.

This post cracks me up. Just 2 years ago when Flanagan finished in 5th I believe, they had 22 BRAND NEW members out of 30. These were kids that hadn't even spun in their A guard, from what one of the members at the time was telling me (we lived in south Florida at that time and new a few of the kids). It's not the age or experience of the kids that matters-- it's how they're taught and their willingness to work hard toward a goal. Of course, having them since elementary school (Like Logan) or having a training guard (like most of the Scholastic World guards) helps as well.
