BOSMarcher
I know this topic has been brough up in other threads, but I wanted to make an official thread concerning to get everyone's input. The two corps that come to mind are Alliance and SoCal Dream. Each are having great seasons, but if you were a corps member (or director), would you rather: A) Make history and be in the Top 10; not to mention, receive a vote at the DCA Rules Congress or B) Win the Class A Championship and receive a gold medal and encore performance. Latrobe's Finest
I'd take the gold medal, the spot in the history books and the good publicity from a Class A title. If I'm a small corps, I'd like to win my class before I make the jump to Open. I can take my Class A crown and go back to my home base and promote the heck out of it. Local newspapers and TV will make more out of "champion" than "finalist" for an activity that many folks don't know about. I know that top 10 gets members rights and all that, but if I'm in Class A, that means I'm small and growing. I'd like to spread the word more with my new championship title and grow more so I can become a perennial top 10 corps.
paradiddle
Class A Champ for all the same reasons as above.
BOSMarcher
I agree with most of you. It seems that a Championship, regardless of the class, is better than 10th place. 1st in the A class sounds better than at the bottom of Open Class. For recruiting purposes, Class A Champion has a certain ring to it... especially if you can add to it by saying that you were the caption winner of ___________. G-horns
I think it depends on what the future plans are for the corps, including where the corps is located... Placement in the top 10 would probably benefit a corps that wants to become Open class and is in a geographic area where they can take advantage of paying shows, share points, etc. Class A Champion benefits a corps that isn't in a geographic area where they can get numerous shows or doesn't have the desire or infrastructure to increase membership to Open Class size. The choice will be different for each corps. Now, as a member, the preference might be selfish but I think corps have to do what is best for survival, not what members "wish for". A darn good Class A corps can be just as rewarding an experience for the members as any Open Class corps.
CallipygianKing
I want both. The rules state that the top 10 corps in prelims are the official voting members receiving all the benefits that come with it. So, once a corps that has declared Class A gets into the top ten at prelims, they should get the benefits no matter what. BUT, they should be given a CHOICE after that. Is it better for their corps to flaunt the championship of the lower class or be counted amongst the big boys? Are the members going to revel in being finalists amongst the best of the best that DCA has to offer, or are they going to look over at the A champion with their shiny medals and encore performance and think, "That's what WE wanted!"? That's a choice that's currently out of the hands of the corps. IF I were the one running my small corps outside of the DCA Homeland (the NE), I would definitely want the medal and the encore and the ability to bring that home and wave those credentials around. For selfish reasons, I'd like to have a second medal up on the shelf. I'd love to let it all out on the field for an encore; one more time performing. For recruiting and promotional reasons, I'd love for us to throw around the "champion" word. Plenty of people want to be a part of the winning team, so that can pull a lot of weight, especially when being a DCA fan is a small niche crowd in a small niche activity. Of course, the next series of questions are... If a corps is in this situation and chooses to go for the Class A championship, what will they do for Open Class finals? Will they just have 9 corps? Will they let the 11th place corps perform? Will that 11th place corps be in exhibition, or will they actually compete? What if that 11th place corps competes and makes it into 9th place? Should there be 11 voting members, then? Them's my two cents.

I hate to say this, and this is sad, but go tell that to the 2007 Defending Class A Champions, The Sunrisers!!! Due to LACK of membership, and total re-organization, they sadly will NOT be defending their title this year.....
JenHa
I too, want both! How about this as a compromise.... I'd like the 10th place bragging rights, and the encore performance...you can keep the medal....the feeling I'd have would be worth more to me than a cold piece of metal! Derek Sanchez
It should be the goal of a corps that is going to Championships to perform on Sunday night. From what I've seen of Alliance they have a chance to make Class A finals this year although they haven't competed against any Class A contenders. So who knows how they stack up against good Class A corps.
