Finals Predictions

Way to go Capital Regiment! Great score that puts CR in first place. This was the first show for CR. Imagine their scores with a few more shows and practices under their belt!! LOOK OUT Open Class Capital Regiment is BACK!!!!!

But do you think they (Capital Regiment) would be able to hold onto that first place spot? When was the show they got the score from? I know for a fact that not all of the Open Class corps have had their first show yet. I'm not saying anything bad about Capital Regiment, I'm sure (and hope) that they'll do well too, I'm just saying...

The show was last night in PA. (NOTE: look at the scores and dates on the home page) You are correct. Some of the Open Class Corps. have not seen competition yet. My point is that from what I have read on this forum, most would not have expected CR to start so well with a first show after several years out of competition. A 64.3 is excellent and it seems most would not have expected that type of score from them. I think this will only improve. Just wanted to say I think that most predictions have underestimated CR. I hope they keep the first place scores! Glad they are back with a bang!!

Like I said, I don't/didn't mean anything bad against CR, I hope they do well myself. But if what Richard just said about their guard, weather they have a small guard or what, and the fact that they have been out of competition for like what, 2 years, they might not win. Granted they were Division 1/World Class the last year they were out and are in Open Class now, they'll probably make finals, it's just my guess that they might not win...

Well, I'm sure there are others out there like yourself who expected them to do well, but not everyone expect it. But I know personnally, I would wait to call them champions at least untill all of the Open Class corps have their first show, then look at the national rankings and see how they compare then.

Im cheering everyone on, but i am pushing and really cheering for my home town team the Citations. Great kids great staff and great growth coming from Burlington. With Spartans completely out of the picture this year (Please come back!) i would imagine an increased membership over last years great year. Here's for continued success from my corps!

I was at the Pittsburgh show last night cheerin' on my Alma Mater Capital Regiment. When I marched, we were world class so I'm not entirely sure how the Open Class world goes. As a band director and former marcher I can give you my perspective of the corps:

Hornline: Looking to field a 44 member hornline. They currently have 8 tubas, around 12 trumpets, 8 mellos, and around 10-12 baritones. The hornline definitely has issues with feet-in-sound, conditioning, and phasing, but what corps doesn't have these problems at their first show in June? I saw their rehearsal that day and small chunks went very well. The book is entertaining and has a fairly high level of demand. I predict this section to be very strong by the end of the season.

Percussion: 7 snares, 4 tenors, 5 basses, about 10 in the pit. Already a very strong section. They had a couple tenors that are still getting into drill and only marched part of the show last night. The pit sounds very good as well. Their books are hard. I predict that this section will by very strong throughout the season.

Guard: 6 on the field, 1 new member, 1 injured. Hopefully they will pick up more on their tour. The drumline picks up flags backfield for the ballad while the guard is doing swing flags in the front. The work is written well, but their technique is weak. Remember that Open class is about the education of its members more than anything else. They will struggle, but should find their way eventually.

Visual/Musical Package: Drill is written well but is obviously very dirty. Lots of movement, straight forward, and they have some body work in there already. There are some very cool effects musically and visually that will be put in soon. The show is a little more jazzy than usual, but still reflects their style (contemporary wind band lit).

Bottom line: This corps was built from the ground up. One vet, the rest are rookies; the staff is all new. This is an entirely new drum corps, and I am so excited to see them back on the field again. Please remember that this activity, particularly Open class, is about the education of its members. Go easy on them!

Starting in 2004, groups at or near the top of open class have opened with a score very close to if not higher than 70. This is where I would expect BDB, SCVC and Teal Sound and other perennial contenders to be scoring when they come out of the gate. So while I'm happy for Capital Regiment, I wouldn't be surprised to find them in the 5-12 placement come finals time. Granted, things change over the course of the season which is the best part about open class. You never know what to expect, and i would imagine that it will be much of the same this year.
