NYCFan
How about this? Since there is the 2010 season about to begin, why not show the apparent "G-7 Darlings" what you think of them NOW, by writing a check to one of the NON G-7 corps right behind them? Imagine a nice financial push for these strong corps that are threatening to topple the self-annointed "Darlings"! And when it happens, you can sit back and chuckle, knowing you had a hand in re-mixing the pot. The whole G-7 idea is silly, and smacks of self-preservation & nervousness; everyone who's been watching has seen the top-12 get more & more competitive, especially over just the past five years. SCV was 7th (and nearly 8th) just year before last; Phantom went from Champ to 9th. Cadets slipped to 5th a couple years ago. Crown has risen, but is only a top-6 for the past 3 years. They spent an eternity in 10-12th place, remember? Nah, this is just a tool to try to prevent being toppled. First rule of success: Once you get to the top of the mountain, you spend most of your time desperately staving off being knocked off. If you can rig the game in your favor, you can try to ensure your survival a little longer. It's basically gerrymandering within DCI, and is completely anti-competitive. And it's a reaction to the recruitment competition that the "darlings" are now increasingly feeling from those corps gunning for them. After all, if you annoint your "darlings' at the end of the season, who will enjoy special treatment the following season, just where do you thnk the advantage will lie during that winter's recruiting? It would make much more sense for these corps to focus on improving their shows, to stay competitive, instead of using parliamentary tricks like stacking the Board & changing the votes & altering the schedule. Waste of energy better spent elsewhere, and does nothing for enhancing the competive product for the fans. But do send a check! And be sure to write "No G-7 Darlings!" on it. My $100 is going to Madison in the morning.!! ( and yes, I was once a long-time "Maroon & Gold Club" member....GEORGE!!!!! Really, is THIS what you spend your time thinking about?? No wonder we had to endure a 2nd "Zone" show....)
dcjosh
I'm sure the "G-7 Darlings" would love for everybody to donate to the other corps. Then all the money that they make for dci's fan network wouldn't have to be taken away from the G7 and given to everybody else. Just think how scared dci would be if the G7 said we're no longer allowing you to sell our videos/mp3s. That's alot of money!!!
CT-Horn
You need to boycott correctly. No T shirts No Web Site Souvies No Merchandise Souvies No special "Lot" DVD's No individual G7 corps paid summer tour site Nothing outside the usual DCI stuff DCI makes nothing when the Blue Devils sell a bumper sticker or when the Cavies sell a License Plate holder or when the Cadets sell a pair of McNutt Drum Sticks. Buy the DCI stuff, yes the G7 will get thier portion as will all the other corps.

Part of the reason the G7 doesn't just break off from DCI is the fact that they would lose all those audio and video rights. DCI keeps them. dcjosh
Nice to see you acknowledge the split that so many others don't see on the wall. Who knows what the G7 really want from dci, but in the end I think they'll get it. I know almost everybody is mad about this, but the fact is dci can't thrive without these 7. If these 7 completely leave eventually, then dci could scale down the tour and maybe survive. They wouldn't make as much money off of videos/mp3/fan network, they would have to lower ticket prices, they wouldn't be able to get big venues, but they probably could survive in some capacity. Just think how scared dci would be if the G7 said we're no longer allowing you to sell our videos/mp3s. That's alot of money!!! But WHICH "G-7" are you talking about? The top 7 corps change, as I pointed out, and it's happening at a more frequent rate recently than in quite a while. It has always gone in cycles, with very few corps really staying in the top-tier consistantly. To now say that they want to change the rules to try to perpetuate their stay at the top is arrogant, anti-competitive, and unfair. If such a system were in place 5 years ago, would not Crown be still stuck in 11th place or so? Is that what we want to see? No possible way for corps to compete legitimately, and advance? The whole point of DCI was to write the rules of Drum Corps for the benefit of the corps themselves, particularly financially, not be dictated to by some other entity. By "segregating" some current version of the "top corps/G-7" and giving them a perpetual advantage, it turns the DCI founding philosophy on it's head! If you want to expand the pie, by bringing in more money, having different types of shows, looking for more profitable models, etc, all that is fine. But do it within the structure of DCI, which means presenting, debating & agreeing to changes, and voting legitimately. This forces the proponents to make the case, that it will benefit everyone, and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposal. That's how a business model is developed. It's great you're writing a check to Madison, but keep in mind that Mason and gang were the original break away bunch with new ideas on market expansion (and they did it!). You would do well to dispense with personal attacks, and focus on the Facts and Issues raised. Everyone is entitiled to their opinion, and to voicing it. You don't have to agree with everyone else's. Comment on the Facts raised, perhaps? I would like to hear your opinion, whether I agree with it or not. AJMHO
