Cadets (Martin, TN Day 2)

Recommended Posts

Good morning it is another hot scorching day in Martin, TN where the Cadets have been since very early Tuesday morning. The heat is about the only thing I may keep mentioning. Kids are staying pretty hydrated and soaking up tons of UV. Almost everyone is benefiting from this three day layover. I say almost because the admin staff and Rudy’s job are always continuous. There is always something to take care of when you have 150 marching members, staff members, drivers, and volunteers to look after.

The Cadets are working on their show and have made some changes, mostly to Scandal, which has made an instant impact to performance. The drivers are all happy and rested and we still have another day here before leaving for Illinois. The food crew is the most essential part of this organization while on tour because they feed us three great meals a day plus snacks. Thanks Matt and your volunteer food crew. They are all the nicest most positive minded people I have been around. I wish I could eat this well while at home.

It’s a full day with a ‘band is cool’ scheduled and lots of local band kids have registered to spend the day with the Cadets. Did I mention that it is hot has heck; there isn’t one bit of shade on the turf field. Dee, one of the three ladies who has the Cadets looking great on the field arrived yesterday to continue alterations on the guard uniforms (and any other uniform alteration). The color guard has a challenging book the first three to four minutes of the production Toy Souldier and they have to do it while performing in Cadet Jackets with shako and very, very tall plumes. Challenging to say the least but Daniel, caption leader, has a great staff working with the guard.

Marching block is in progress, the holes have been filled, and the Cadets are getting better fast. I’ll say this one more time it is hot. There really isn’t much more to share with you right now. As it happens I’ll try to share what I can. The band director here at UT Martin has just been great. Thank you! They have opened up their facility to the Cadets and we can’t thank them enough. It sure was worth the 475 mile drive to get here. Next stop Illinois.

To the parents of any marching member I can tell you that your child, kid, young man or woman is doing what they love to do, drum corps marching as a Cadet. I watch them practice all day in this intense heat and then to watch them put on the Cadet uniform and perform under the lights is just awesome. Be proud of their choice to march as Cadets, they are!

Thanks for the update. Can you give more details on the guard's progress with their jackets? Are the jackets being altered or is the guard practicing the work while wearing jackets? I am curious to hear any info you are able to share.

Just got back from The Cadets Experience a little while ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. I am truly glad that there are such great organizations like The Cadets. Although I didn't have any students participating today, it was clear that the focus was on the kids. You should have seen all the excitement displayed. I know that I would've had a ball if I were still in high school and got to play with The Cadets and got to stand with staff on the field right in the middle of intricate drill. Just looking at how happy it seemed to make the kids made the event worth going to. I feel that The Cadets made the best of an already awesome experience and I am glad to see such a classy organization in DCI. I wish all corps would do things like this and make kids, parents, directors, and fans feel so welcome and important. This was the best statement of "fan appreciation" that I have been to. Much better than the one from my favorite corps a couple weeks ago. Great work Cadets, and I hope to see more groups reach out to the kids like this in the future! I have a newfound appreciation for this organization. Thank you Cadets.
