The Percussion Discussion

...and here I thought our drumzilla in 2003 was too big. 9 snares, 4 tenors, 5 basses, 5 cymbals and 8 or more in the pit with a hornline of 36 or so. We didn't put scoops on the snares because they didn't need help with projection. Balance was a bit of an issue early on in the season, but the blend was quite nice on the finals recordings.

it's all in how you write for it and teach it.

signed a guy who worked with a band with 8 snares, 4 tenors, 6 basses, 12 pit and 34 winds

Add technique to writing and teaching, Jeff. Crown beat the snot out of their drums. Other lines played more "finesse". Neither is right or wrong (although my arms hurt from just watching how much Crown played through the head).

But you can field 20 snares if you know how to write, balance, teach, and produce a solid technique to match your needs.

uh i expect clean. i thought that was a given

Its not just balance though... from a clean stand point I rather see 7 clean snares than 9 or 10 with 1 or 2 that arent at the level of the others.
