I remember overhearing a discussion some years ago between two Bluecoats support staff members when the corps was in seventh place. I think it was 1996. The discussion went a little something like this:

"We're in first place," support staff member No. 1 said.

"What are you talking about?" No. 2 asked. "We're seventh."

"Naw," No. 1 said, grinning out of the side of her mouth. "We're in first of the junior corps. The top six, they're the professionals. We're in first place of all of the junior corps."

"Ohhhhhhh. Okay."

My how things change.

It's a nice quip and all, but unless you get some cash to be direct deposited into your bank account after your performance, you're not a " professional "... whether you're in a Corps that finished 1st or 23rd.

I must admit....coming into 2010, how many of us did not see Bluecoats in 2nd place? That may have been true in, say 2007, but this year was a surprise for me.

This is THE BEST corps Bluecoats have ever fielded since 2007. Excellent job, and I can't wait to see what happens next week.

I'm really glad to see the the Bluecoats as the contender this year! After last year all the kids were like "OMG Crown!" and "Crown is gonna totally win" and you get the point. It just proves that with the right program any corps can put themselves in the elite.

Hey, there's been lots of talk for the long-standing corps who've been

to the top 3 medal positions, but let's not forget the "new kid on the block"

who happens to currently be in second place!

That's right, The BLUECOATS are in medal contention for the first time in their

history (since 1972)! Can you imagine the excitement of their 5-year vets who've

gone from their old blue and white uniforms in 2006 and finished in 4th place with

"Connexus", fell short of their expectations over the next two years with color guard

issues and weaknesses, improved greatly last year with a solid staff, and now this

current group blistering their show "Metropolis - The Future is Now"!

Although people have deemed them an underdog, and "let's wait and see" how they

fare over the next two weeks - they've already proved their strenghts as a corps,

which has the strongest group of kids (matched with a completely talented staff to

boot!) to help them continue on track to medal this year.

For those of us who have seen and heard their show live and have witnessed their

intensity on the field, let me be the first to congratulate you publicly on this forum,

and encourage other DCP members to show their support towards a new voice in

the top 3 slots in championships. "Here-Here" for THE BLUECOATS!

SIX WORDS! GO BLOOOOOO!

Umm, that's two words. Nothing would please me more than Bluecoats winning this year. Well, ok Blue Stars winning would please me more, but in lieu of that happening, GO BLOOOOO!

Actually, knowing the six words is priveleged information.

All you need to know is...

GO BLOOOOOO!

And so they shall!

I'm happy they are doing so well but I have to tell ya...the more I see their show the less I like it. All that electronic crap really gets on my nerves. Why do they feel the need to ruin perfectly good music by altering it with electronics? Why do we need to hear a recorded female voice in the second number? Why do we need to hear recorded string instruments playing in the ballad? Answer: we don't. None of this is necessary and detracts from the show. I think they have a really awesome corps this year and they are playing really aggresively. There a parts of the show that I love (like those awesome contras) but all the electronics just bogs it down for me and I actually found myself bored while watching their ATL performance. Hopefully it was just a mood I was in. All that being said, I really hope they do well in the end and at least medal. Go bluuuu!

The reason they wanted to use a female voice in the second number is because it is a different timbre, the original is Imogen Heap. Why not use the source material to give great emotion and sonority?

String Instruments, again in the ballad are a way to bring a different emotion and sound to the piece.

BTW: the tuba solo is full of electronic call and response with the tubas. A lot of A and B there.

Go Blooooooo
