One of the strongest units in WGI, Pride of Cincinnati, takes a year off from time to time, and it hasnt seem to hurt them.

I'm glad Crown is willing to step back.

Overall its not TERRIBLY TERRIBLY expensive. However with the crap that Crown does financially, its no wonder they cannot afford it. Changing of uniforms EVERY year, the purchasing of extremely extensive pieces of equiptment.... Topped with the need to be the RICHEST and BIGGEST spending corps has finally showed them why they are not a DCI Champion.

It takes right at $25,000 to have a solid and highly competitive WG. Being that CrownGUARD charged approx $1,200 and have 22 members on average they still made about $1,400 in PROFIT. However, planning and logistics are what takes the most time.

All I can say is this should prove that Crown CANNOT be consistent and does NOT strive to provide a consistent performing ensemble that is professional and dedicated to member development. I think its a shame that one yer yu can be here, and another you can be gone. This was the SAME case with CrownGUARD when it was in Dayton. Here a few years gone for several, back then gone.

LOL Crown really should just get some new leadership, I am sure there are the DIE HARDS down there, but I think Coats and Smith have ceased to see reality.

REALLY?

Maybe donations are down. Couldn't possibly have anything to do with greedy 7 proposals?

Crown would not be taking a year off from winter guard due to "finances" if the guard operation was profitable, as you say it is.

Ummm - no it doesn't. I ran a guard - and there's no way you can run it for $25K - you're looking at at least $80K to $100K and that's low balling it.

Later,

Mike

You can have your own opinion about whatever you want, but nobody EVER talks bad about Kevin Smith. That man was one of the original founders of the corps and you'll have a hard time finding a better person anywhere.

I will not pretend to know what the costs are of running a competitive WGI guard, but I say good for Crown for deciding not to overextend themselves. Those guys have made some very shrewd business decisions in the last decade to get them where they are, and if they made this call, it's probably for the best.

Another thing to remember: these days, guards attached to corps are often (not ALWAYS, just often) more a function of the instructor, not the organization. IIRC, Phantom's guard went under and Crown's appeared around the same time. Maybe it wasn't meeting the needs of the overall organization.

It's all about risk vs. reward, right?

I hear from all my Crown friends that Kevin is a great man. But he does look kind of like Droopy Dog.

Not to mention, he's a volunteer. Other top 6 corps directors making upwards of 6 figures and Kevin has worked for free for over 20 years now.
