"Vote For The Worst" in the TOC Shows?

Recommended Posts

Ok, so they have announced that the judging of the TOC shows WILL be part of the regular-season scores. In other words, they WILL include the TOC show scores along with those from the regular-season shows, in the total-season competition.

They didn't spell it out, but does this mean they will have the SAME JUDGING PANELS as regular shows have?

And to the point of this Thread, they've announced that "fan texting" will be a part of the score. (Forget about the fact that a large percentage, perhaps a majority, of the audience does not text).

What happens if a movement akin to the American Idol "Vote for the Worst" occurs?

(For those not familiar with this, you can go to "votefortheworst.com" or "VFTW" in Google; Essentially, folks were fed-up with American Idol for NOT being a true, straighforward competition, designed to bring out the very best amateur singing talent in America, even though the show was advertised as such; These folks saw the American Idol that was being presented for what it really was: A sham, and a chance to boost ratings (and $$) by putting onstage individuals that clearly had little or marginal talent, while back in the pre-auditions phases weeding out many, many very good singers. This due to the "comedic" or "outrageous" factor in boosting ratings for the show, especially in the early parts of the elimination-competition. Instead of letting TALENT AND MERIT boost the ratings for the show, by packing it with a straightforward competition of the best talent.

Sound familiar, folks? ( Remember, the very establishment of a TOC "Great-8" precludes the concept of MERIT, as it's saying there is no chance for numbers 9-12+ EVER moving into the "Great-8" ). Not saying that the members of those 8 corps are not talented, they are. Just that they are being "annointed" as the best, prior to any actual competition, then "Showcased" and specifically-marketed as such. The similarities here are far too close for comfort.

What the VFTW folks did was decide to have some fun with it: They created a website to let people get together and pick a single "Loser" that they would all vote for in the American Idol call/texting on the actual show, which then skewed the voting results and kept returning to the show, week after week, individuals who were clearly not qualified, talent-wise, to be there. They in effect created their OWN "outrageousness" by gaming American Idol at their own game. And it became funnier each week, as the "Loser" kept moving up to the next level, looking more & more like a fish out of water.( Or an Emperor with no clothes...?? ).

So now, what happens if/when the texters decide to game the TOC shows? We could have a situation where the last-place corps out of the TOC "Great 8" suddenly rockets to the top and wins the competition, each and every TOC show!!

Then the very next regular-show competition, they would drop back to their regular "slot".

Or would they?

How would this affect the "slotting"?? Or will this expose the TOC shows to be something that completely messes up the regular-show competitions, by making the judges unsure of which scores are real, and which are not? Will we get to the end of the season, and have a situation where the judges don't have a firm grasp on reality anymore?

My, my......the possibilities for some very Devilish antics have certainly been enhanced for the summer of 2011..!!!

Oh.....but Drum Corps has no history of "Devlilish Antics", now does it........:-)

Comments, anyone....??????

You realize, one would not actually have to be at the show, to vote in it. (texting).

That means people could affect the placements in the TOC shows from home.

This could get very funny, very quickly....LOL

Your characterization of American Idol is a bit over the top. Idol might in the early stages promote certain candidates to make the show more interesting. At the same time, it must seek to elevate the candidates capable of the greatest appeal. That's where it makes money. Thinking the most-marketable candidates are somehow deprived is preposterous. Idol is in business to make money. Promoting the most marketable candidates is how it makes money.

Which makes this a great metaphor for the drum-corps-gone-wrong discussion. There may be better singers out there. So what? What Idol wants is a package it can sell on TV and on iTunes. Singing talent is just one quality among many it seeks. If you can sing but can't smile you might not win because you might not sell. The victor isn't the one who appeals the the purists. The victor is the one who appeals to the most.

Which means that sometimes people like us with high standards and high expectations are dissappointed. We might appreciate Adam Lambert. Not everyone does. He was the Blue Devils of Idol where his talent was undeniable yet lots of people voted against him.

It's yet one more argument against the fan-o-meter. No offense to the rest of you, but you just can't be trusted.

I honestly think that DCI crowds are not that educated in the activity. The average Joe will have his favorite show. It may or not be the same as everyone else's.

If you get your kicks out of trying to mess up a new idea, go ahead, but I would prefer if you just didn't go to a show.

My brother (who has never been to a show. Only seen high school bands) went to the Atlanta regional and said he didn't know if he would be able to take the torture all day. From the time PR took the field to the time BD left it, he was captured and amazed. Is he a slotter?

Average Joe. Thats his nonbiased opinion.
