gsksun4
Just listened to 1962 Carnegie Hall performance of St. Kevin's Emerald Knights. In the middle of their set, they sing. How cool is that? Sounded like a barbershop quartet, only maybe the full corps. Anyone remember what that was all about? I guess there were a few in the history of St. Kevin's that boasted of singing at Carnegie Hall. Nice gig if ya can get it.

Nice gig if ya can get it. In 1961 St. kevins emerald knights were asked by their spiritual director, Fr. Kierce to be a part of a new singing contest sponsored by the Boston CYO. In the begining we were only going to do this because of Fr. Kierce. Then we started to reherse and found out that this was fun. We won the contest for the next few years and then the CYO stopped it because nobody could beat us. We always enjoyed singing and to this day St. Kevins Senior corps still does sing. If you come to the GAS show in Quincy Mass. next weekend you will see a number of corps performing and singing ..........Jim

Tim K
I taught at St. Kevin's (in the school) long after the Emerld Knights, but I'm sure that the corps sang just because Fr. Kierce asked. He had a way of getting people to do anything he asked, and could sometimes make them think it was their idea! As anyone who knew Fr. Kierce can attest, drum corps was only one of the ways he did great things for others.. In 1961 St. kevins emerald knights were asked by their spiritual director, Fr. Mike Killion
I taught at St. Kevin's (in the school) long after the Emerld Knights, but I'm sure that the corps sang just because Fr. Monsignor Dalton, the pastor at St Kevins Church, was speaking to our 8th grade class at St Kevins School in 1965, wanting to know our plans for high school, our involvement in the parish activities etc. He told us he had come really close to disbanding the Emerald Knights earlier due to some underage drinking and trouble some of its members had gotten into as a result ( imagine that, kids from Dorchester drinking underage, legal age was 21). Then he said, Fr. Kierce talked him out of it.
elphaba01
"Carnagie Hall & Drum Corps": The 1962 "Evening With the Corps" at Carnagie Hall was one, if not THE best of the series. ALL of the corps, junior and senior were in great form and treated the sparse audience to a terriffic night of drum corps music. St Kevins horn quartet opened the show with a fanfare from the balcony, Interstatesmen shot off their rifles (Blanks!!!) to open their concert, Don Angelica appeared with Hawthorne wearing a bullfighters cape and Skyliners had "Ludwig VonDrumhead" leading the "Orchestra". Caimbridge Caballeros, Blessed Sacrament, St Kevins, St Catherines Queensmen and Garfield Cadets, all finalists from the DCN Mid Winter standstills appeared as well as the Audubon All Girls Bon Bons. Seniors featured Reading Bucaneers, Hawthorne Caballeros, Skyliners, Archer Epler Musketeers and the Interstatesmen. Wonderfull memories from a great winter show.
