It's a Family Show

Recommended Posts

The Whitewater Classic show has $7 tickets (concert side) and parking is free.

For $28, a family of four can see a great show including the Cavaliers, Blue Stars, Colts, Troopers, Teal Sound and Pioneer in one of the best stadiums for drum corps.

Plenty of room to spread out a bit, especially with younger kids with the wiggles.

When you're done with the show, stay the weekend in Whitewater. Go boating or camping. Or head up to the Dells!

Point being we are really trying to get this show re-established and are offering inexpensive seating options to get the stands filled. Some shows are going to have different pricing options depending on numerous variables. But keep in mind that shows, and paid admission, is what keeps this activity going. We need to have a paying audience in the stands. A good portion of the revenue from the show goes directly to the corps participating in the show.

Wow! That is crazy affordable... and a great show (I went to it the first time as a kid in the 80's when BOA still had their summer camp in Whitewater).

Have you thought about trying to put together some packages with other things to do as you mentioned (could be a way to also pick up some revenue)?

What about completely blasting local media? Getting on morning shows? Local news? A lot of local media run spots for non-profits for free if given to them well in advance. Seems like anywhere you could get it promoted would help get people there.... that is a crazy price!

The Tickets Are Too #### High!

Now... let's be clear... tickets for the center seats and even near middle are just fine... maybe even a bit low in some cases... but...

The barrier to entry to just show up at all is too high for the curious or casual, we are limiting the activity to only established fans.

As an example, I talked with some of my siblings. Three of them will have kids going to shows the shows in SLC or San Antonio with their school bands. I asked them why the whole family wasn't going, and they simply said the cost of taking the whole family made it not worth it compared to other entertainment options. For the price of tickets for their family to the SLC show, they could get a day pass for the whole family to Lagoon, an amusement park nearby.

...

I'm not saying bring all the tickets down... just make a family ticket option for the gizzard and gristle seats... and see what happens.

Two YEA! shows have $15 seats and another has $18 seats. That is pretty low.

I just wanted to take you to task a bit for your misguided assertions in your original post about the "tickets are too #### high"

You wrote that your friend's family could go to the "Lagoon" near San Antonio for a full day for less than they could go to a TOC/regional event.

Let's remove driving distance from the equation since it is not DCI's fault that your friends live in a state where the driving distances are crazy and that gas is as expensive as it has ever been.

I found the "Lost Lagoon" water park, which is inside Sea World, San Antonio.

If you buy four single-day tickets, you can get a discounted rate of $47.50 a person, which is $190.00.

Sea World San Antonio, with complimentary admission to "The Lost Lagoon" water park.

Plus $19 dollars to park. And food while you are in the park all day. And souvies and photo booths and all of that amusement park stuff you will need to pay for with your kids in tow.

So in the end, at least $65.00 per person.

The DCI TOC event in Houston offers this line-up:

Blue Devils, Blue Stars, Bluecoats, Carolina Crown, Phantom Regiment, Santa Clara Vanguard, The Cadets, The Cavaliers; which is, by all accounts, a killer show.

$30-$50 dollars for tickets, and I am including the fees when you buy. Parking is not included, but I can find no info on how much it is.

DCI TOC event Houston, July 22 TX

The show will be short enough that you don't need to feed you family inside the venue, so that will be cheaper.

So your friends could go the the show for around $40 per person. Which is in fact less than going to the water park.

But perhaps you didn't mean to mix up your activities, like a water park and a music event (DCI).

So, just as a comparison, I looked up a couple of Family-Friendly music events near the same Major City.

The cheapest tickets for The Wiggles in Rosemont, IL are $71.00 per seat. The cheapest ticket on the floor is $262.00 per seat.

(This price does not include processing, or fees, or parking, which will be extra.)

Wiggles in Rosemont July 30th

I didn't see anything about a family discount. They seem to sell a lot of tickets for just another stop on their tour. What with it not being a "Championships" or anything.

The Cavaliers home show in Lisle has reserved seating for $35.00 and bench seating for $25.00. No clue what parking will be, but it will not be as much as the Rosemont Theatre.

Reserved Seating for Cavalcade of Brass June 29

The DCI shows seems like a good deal to me. And probably thousands of others who will attend the shows this summer.

Perhaps your friends just are not that into DCI anymore, or would rather leave their progeny at a show and grab some alone time for a few hours.

My point?

DCI charges a fair price to see this awesome thing we all love.

Wow, I "thought" we were talking about getting new people into the stands. Why of course most people who LOVE drum corps don;t mind paying a kings ransom to sit on the 50 and be awed and thrilled.

However, ask that same family if they want to sit ( possibly cramped and hot depending on the stadium ) for 4 hours or spend 8 to 10 hours in a amusement park ? I know many drum corps kids who would vote the amusement park.

Todays shows are so much different than the 70's and 80's. Back then you could sit on the 30-35 yard line and still "get it". As shows have progressed and became even MORE FOCUSED ON THE BOX, if you're outside the 40's it's a waste of money IMHO.

But what the heck, I'm spending less and less on drum corps so who am I to complain ?

I remember when Hershey for $18 got you 4/5 DCA corps, 5/6 DCI corps and the Marines.

now, if you want to sit on the 20, $18 gets you 4-6 DCI corps

Well, Old Bridge gets you 6 DCI corps plus Bayonne for $15. Jackson has 7 corps for $15. West Chester has 7 for $18. Not bad. IMO that is enough corps for a great evening's entertainment.

I bet there are more 4 and 5 corps shows in DCA as a percentage of all of the shows than in DCI.

I brought this subject three years ago when a show was being held in a new city for the first time in a long time. It was either $25 or $30 for a four corps show and I received a lot of grief for bringing this up. And the four corps were not all top 12 corps at the time. Someone in a higher authority must have felt the same way as the skies opened up, it poured like there was no tomorrow and the show was cancelled. And no refunds. I do not seem to recall a show since then with with these prices and such a small lineup. Glad I didn't go but I had friends new to the activity who did and were not impressed with the situation.
