Loudest Drum Corps -- 2011 Atlanta Edition

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure I'm any more convinced. If 3dB is doubling the power, how do we explain Crown at 11dB above BD? Surely they were double, triple or more louder?

No disputing, just not computing ..

Randy's just right with his answer above.

Measurements is a science in itself. There are so many variables in a show situation that it would be impossible to say Randy's numbers are 100% definitive. As he says, they're for fun.

Some factors:

- Accuracy of the equipment

- Direction of microphone

- Directionality of microphone

- Isolation of microphone from reflections and unrelated noise (such as crowd)

- Bandwidth of equipment

- Position of corps on field (huge impact... sound attenuates proportionally to square of distance, meaning twice the distance equates to 1/4 the power other things being equal)

- Direction of horns (some corps might be better than others playing to the box, making sound in first row less)

All that being said, the numbers should be pretty representative of Randy's experience in his seat even if they aren't necessarily what each corps would do in controlled studio conditions... thanks so much for taking the effort and sharing!

Does this just mean that the Amps from the Loudest Corps, go to 11 and everyone else only goes to 10?

The number you got for BS upsets me. Did you by chance do any decible levels for 2009? I loved playing the loud chords during the "war" section just before taps.

Sorry--I didn't think about doing any measurements until the 2010 season. The only show I saw live in 2009 was in Atlanta and we were seated pretty far back.

OK--here are the rest of my measurements and notes.

For each corps, they should be in music order. I don't have all the corps reps memorized, so I may call anything slow a "ballad" and use generic terms like opener, closer, next section, etc. when I didn't know the tune title. I was able to measure over a time span (usually a defined section of the corps' show) and then could see the max level on the meter, which is presented here with notes on where it occurred. Hopefully, those of you more familiar with the music will be able to match the measurements to the section. Of course, for the "ballad" there is usually (but not always) a nice crescendo which represents the max value.

Yes and Spirits go to 12. Wish it wasn't so loud cause it distracts from how loud the horns really are which is... LOUD!

Actually, for the Atlanta show Spirit had turned down their amps quite a bit. I was even going to measure the audio and sound effects during Spirit's show, but hearing the marked difference (from Gadsden), I didn't bother.

Wondering if Madison's brass had an off night because in San Antonio they were definitely louder than Crown. Louder than everyone.
